Friday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Friday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 148

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from/the sky!
Praise _ him in/the heav-ens!
Praise him, all his an-gels!
Praise him, all his heaven-ly as-sem-bly!

Praise him, O sun and moon!
Praise him, all you shin-y stars!
Praise him, O highest heav-en,
and you waters a-bove the sky!

Let them praise the name of/the Lord,
for he gave the com-mand
and they came into ex-ist-ence.
He es-tab-lished them so they would en-dure;

he issued a de-cree
that will not be re-voked.
Praise the Lord from/the earth,
you sea creatures and all you ocean depths,

O fire and hail, snow and clouds,
O stormy wind that carries out his or-ders,
you mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you ce-dars,

you ani-mals and all you cat-tle,
you _ creeping things and birds,
you kings of/the earth and all you na-tions,
you princes and all you leaders on/the earth,

you young women and young men,
you elder-ly, a-long with you chil-dren!
Let them praise the name of/the Lord,
for his name a-lone is ex-alt-ed;

his maj-es-ty ex-tends over the earth and sky.
He has made his people vic-to-ri-ous,
and given all his loyal follow-ers reason to praise the Isra-elites,
the people who are close to him. Praise the Lord!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Colossians 2:6-12

Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you through an empty, deceitful philosophy that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form, and you have been filled in him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. In him you also were circumcised—not, however, with a circumcision performed by human hands, but by the removal of the fleshly body, that is, through the circumcision done by Christ. Having been buried with him in baptism, you also have been raised with him through your faith in the power of God who raised him from the dead.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song to the Lamb

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Splendor and honor and king-ly power
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-ated every-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-ated and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fami-ly, lan-guage, people, and na-tion,
a kingdom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on/the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be worship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for-ever and for-ever-more.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A reading from John 16:23-30

At that time you will ask me nothing. I tell you the solemn truth, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive it, so that your joy may be complete.

“I have told you these things in obscure figures of speech; a time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in obscure figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father. At that time you will ask in my name, and I do not say that I will ask the Father on your behalf. For the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and entered into the world, but in turn, I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

His disciples said, “Look, now you are speaking plainly and not in obscure figures of speech! Now we know that you know everything and do not need anyone to ask you anything. Because of this we believe that you have come from God.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Third Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

A-rise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of/the Lord has dawned up-on you.
For be-hold, dark-ness covers the land;
deep gloom en-shrouds the peo-ples.

But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will ap-pear up-on you.
Na-tions will stream to your light,
and kings to/the bright-ness of your dawn-ing.

Your gates will al-ways be o-pen;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of/the Lord,
The Zi-on of/the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

Vio-lence will/no more be heard in your land,
ru-in or de-struc-tion with-in your bor-ders.
You will call your walls, Sal-va-tion,
and all your por-tals, Praise.

The sun will/no more be your light by day;
by night you will/not need the brightness of/the moon.
The Lord will be your ever-last-ing light,
and your God will be your glo-ry.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever. A-men.

We en-treat you, O Lord.
That your holy an-gels may lead us in paths of peace and good-will,

That we may be bound to-gether by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Barna-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-other and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.

May God bless us!
May God, our God, bless us!
Then all the ends of/the earth
will give him the honor he de-serves.

May God show us his favor and bless us!
May he smile up-on us!
Then those living on earth will know what you are like;
all na-tions will know how you de-liver your peo-ple.

Let foreign-ers re-joice and cel-e-brate!
For you exe-cute jus-tice a-mong the na-tions,
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,

Psalm 123

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

I look up toward you,
the one en-throned in heav-en.
Look, as the eyes of servants look to/the hand of their mas-ter,
as the eyes of/a maid look to/the hand of her mis-tress,

so our eyes will look to/the Lord, our God,
un-til he shows us fa-vor.
Show us fa-vor,
O Lord, show us your fa-vor!

For we have had our fill
of hu-mili-a-tion, and then some.
We have had our fill of/the taunts of/the self-as-sured,
of the con-tempt of/the proud.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Collect of the Day

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, "Peace I give to you; my peace I leave with you:" Regard not our sins, but the faith of your Church, and give to us the peace and unity of that heavenly city, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, now and for ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.

Amen.

Be-hold, I bring you good news of great joy,
which will come to all the peo-ple;
for unto you is born this day
in the city of Da-vid,

a Sav-ior, who is Christ the Lord.
Be-hold, the dwelling of God is with man-kind.
He will dwell with them,
and they shall be his peo-ple,

and God him-self will be with them,
and He will be their God.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouth shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 103

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Praise the Lord, O my soul!
With all that is with-in me, praise his holy name!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
Do not for-get all his kind deeds!

He's the one who for-gives all your sins,
who heals all your dis-eas-es,
who de-livers your life from/the Pit,
who crowns you with his loyal love and com-pas-sion,

who satis-fies your life with good things,
so your youth is re-newed like an ea-gle.
The Lord does what is fair,
and exe-cutes justice for all the op-pressed.

The Lord re-vealed his faithful acts to Mo-ses,
his deeds to/the Is-rael-ites.
The Lord is com-passion-ate and mer-ci-ful;
he is pa-tient and demon-strates great loyal love.

He does not al-ways ac-cuse,
and does not stay an-gry.
He does not deal with us as our sins de-serve;
he does not re-pay us as our mis-deeds de-serve.

For as the skies are high a-bove the earth,
so his loyal love towers over his faithful follow-ers.
As far as the east is from/the west,
so he re-moves the guilt of our re-bel-lious ac-tions from us.

As a fath-er has com-passion on his chil-dren,
so the Lord has com-passion on his faithful follow-ers.
For he knows what we are made of;
he real-izes we are made of clay.

A person's life is like grass.
Like a flower in/the field it flourish-es,
but when the hot wind blows by, it disap-pears,
and one can no longer spot where it once grew.

But the Lord con-tin-ual-ly shows loyal love
to _ his faithful follow-ers,
and is faithful to their de-scend-ants,
to those who keep his cove-nant,

who are careful to o-bey his com-mands.
The Lord has es-tab-lished his throne in heav-en;
his kingdom ex-tends over eve-ry-thing.
Praise the Lord, you an-gels of his,

you power-ful warri-ors
who carry out his de-crees
and o-bey his or-ders!
Praise the Lord, all you warri-ors of his,

You servants of his who carry out his de-sires!
Praise the Lord, all that he has made,
in all the regions of his king-dom!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Genesis 17:1-12, 15-16

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the Sovereign God. Walk before me and be blameless. Then I will confirm my covenant between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants.”

Abram bowed down with his face to the ground, and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer will your name be Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham because I will make you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you extremely fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you. I will confirm my covenant as a perpetual covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. I will give the whole land of Canaan—the land where you are now residing—to you and your descendants after you as a permanent possession. I will be their God.”

Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep the covenantal requirement I am imposing on you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. This is my requirement that you and your descendants after you must keep: Every male among you must be circumcised. You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins. This will be a reminder of the covenant between me and you. Throughout your generations every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, whether born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not one of your descendants.

Then God said to Abraham, “As for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai; Sarah will be her name. I will bless her and will give you a son through her. I will bless her and she will become a mother of nations. Kings of countries will come from her!”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

O rul-er of/the uni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-pas-sing human under-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of righteous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ag-es.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the praises of your Name?
for you only are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and holy works
have been re-vealed. Alle-lu-ia, a-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,

Friday - Song of Zechariah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty sav-ior,
born of/the house of his servant Da-vid.

Through his holy proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our ene-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-member his holy cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from/the hands of our ene-mies,
Free to wor-ship him without fear,

ho-ly and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of/the Most High,

for you will go be-fore the Lord to pre-pare his way,
To give his people knowledge of sal-va-tion
by the for-give-ness of their sins.
In/the tender com-pas-sion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those who dwell in dark-ness
and in/the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Have mer-cy on us, Lord, have mer-cy.

Lord, show us your love and mer-cy;
For we put our trust in you.
In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.

Collects of the Day

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Al-might-y God, Fa-ther of all mer-cies,
we your un-worthy serv-ants give you hum-ble thanks
for all your good-ness and loving kind-ness
to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our cre-a-tion, pres-er-va-tion,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your im-measur-able love
in\the re-demp-tion of\the world by our Lord Je-sus Christ;

for\the means of grace, and for\the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give\us such\an a-ware-ness of your mer-cy,
that with truly thank-ful hearts
we may show forth your praise,

not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your ser-vice,
and by walking be-fore you
in holi-ness and righteous-ness all our days;

through Je-sus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
be hon-or and glo-ry
through-out all the ag-es. A-men.
