Invitation

Thursday - Compline Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord Al-might-y grant us a peaceful night
and a per-fect end. A-men.
Our help is in/the Name of/the Lord;
The mak-er of heaven and earth.

Al-might-y God, our heaven-ly Fath-er:
We have sinned a-gainst you,
through our own fault,
in thought, and word, and deed,

and in what we have left un-done.
For the sake of your Son
our Lord Je-sus Christ,
for-give us all our of-fens-es;

and grant that we may serve you
in _ new-ness of life,
to the glory of your Name. A-men.
May the Al-might-y God grant us

for-give-ness of all our sins,
and the grace and comfort of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Psalm 51

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Have mercy on me, O God,
be-cause of your loyal love!
Be-cause of your great com-pas-sion,
wipe a-way my re-bel-lious acts!

Wash a-way my wrong-do-ing!
Cleanse me of all my sins!
For I am a-ware of my re-bel-lious acts;
I am for-ever conscious of my sin.

A-gainst you, you a-bove all, I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So you are just when you con-front me;
you are right when you con-demn me.

Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother con-ceived me.
Look, you de-sire in-tegri-ty in/the inner man;
you want me to pos-sess wis-dom.

Cleanse me with hys-sop and I will be pure;
wash me and I will be whiter than snow.
Grant me the ulti-mate joy of being for-giv-en!
May the bones you crushed re-joice!

Hide your face from my sins!
Wipe a-way all my guilt!
Cre-ate for me a pure heart, O God!
Re-new a right spirit with-in me!

Do not re-ject me!
Do not take your holy Spi-rit a-way from me!
Let me a-gain ex-peri-ence the joy of your de-liver-ance!
Sus-tain me by giving me the de-sire to o-bey!

Then I will teach rebels your merci-ful ways,
and sinners will turn to you.
Res-cue me from/the guilt of mur-der, O God,
the God who de-livers me!

Then my tongue will shout for joy
be-cause of your righteous-ness.
O Lord, give me the words!
Then my mouth will praise you.

Certain-ly you do not want a sacri-fice,
or else I would offer it;
you do not de-sire a burnt sacri-fice.
The sacri-fices God de-sires are a hum-ble spirit O God,

a hum-ble and re-pent-ant heart you will not re-ject.
Be-cause you favor Zi-on, do what is good for her!
Cre-ate for me a pure heart, O God!
Re-new a right spirit with-in me!

Forti-fy the walls of Je-ru-sa-lem!
Then you will ac-cept the pro-per sacri-fic-es,
burnt sacri-fices and whole offer-ings;
then bulls will be sacri-ficed on your al-tar.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Revelation 21:1-6

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, and the sea existed no more. And I saw the holy city—the new Jerusalem—descending out of heaven from God, made ready like a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Look! The residence of God is among human beings. He will live among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more—or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.”

And the one seated on the throne said: “Look! I am making all things new!” Then he said to me, “Write it down, because these words are reliable and true.” He also said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who is thirsty I will give water free of charge from the spring of the water of life.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

De-liver us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,
now and for-ever A-men.

Collect of the Day

Visit this place, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace; and let your blessing be upon us always; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Into your hands, O Lord, I com-mend my spi-rit;
For you have re-deemed me, O Lord, O God of truth.
Keep us, O Lord, as the apple of your eye;
Hide us under the shadow of your wings.

Lord, have mer-cy up-on us.
Christ, have mer-cy up-on us.
Lord, hear our prayer;
And let our cry come to you.

Guide us as we wake, O Lord,
and guard us as we sleep;
that a-wake we may watch with Christ,
and a-sleep we may rest in peace.

Lord, you now have set your serv-ant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-lighten the na-tions,
and the glory of your people Is-ra-el.
The al-mighty and merci-ful Lord,
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit, bless and keep us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Guide us as we wake, O Lord,
and guard us as we sleep;
that a-wake we may watch with Christ,
and a-sleep we may rest in peace.

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:

Thursday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 90

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O Lord, you have been our pro-tector through all gener-a-tions!
Even be-fore the mountains came into ex-ist-ence,
or you brought the world into be-ing,
you were the e-ter-nal God.

You make man-kind re-turn to/the dust,
and say, Re-turn, O peo-ple!
Yes, in your eyes a thousand years are like yester-day that quickly pass-es,
or like one of/the di-vi-sions of/the night-time.

You bring their lives to/an end and they fall a-sleep.
In/the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up;
in the morning it glis-tens and sprouts up;
at eve-ning time it withers and dries up.

Yes, we are con-sumed by your an-ger;
we are terri-fied by your wrath.
You are a-ware of our sins;
you even know a-bout our hid-den sins.

Yes, through-out all our days we ex-pe-rience your raging fu-ry;
the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh.
The days of our lives add up to seven-ty years,
or eight-y, if one is e-special-ly strong.

But even one's best years are marred by trou-ble
and sor-rowed by op-pres-sion.
Yes, they pass quickly and we fly a-way.
Who can really fath-om the in-ten-sity of your an-ger?

Your raging fu-ry caus-es people to fear you.
So teach us to con-sider our mor-tal-i-ty,
so that we might live wise-ly.
Turn back toward us, O Lord!

How long must this suffer-ing last?
Have pit-y on your serv-ants!
Satis-fy us in/the morn-ing with your loyal love!
Then we will shout for joy and be happy all our days!

Make us happy in pro-portion to/the days you have af-flicted us,
in pro-portion to/the years we have ex-pe-rienced trou-ble!
May your serv-ants see your work!
May their sons see your maj-es-ty!

May our sove-reign God ex-tend his favor to us!
Make our en-deav-ors suc-cess-ful!
Yes, make them suc-cess-ful!
O Lord, you have been our pro-tec-tor.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Isaiah 65:15-25

Your names will live on in the curse formulas of my chosen ones.
The Sovereign Lord will kill you,
but he will give his servants another name.

Whoever pronounces a blessing in the earth
will do so in the name of the faithful God;
whoever makes an oath in the earth
will do so in the name of the faithful God.
For past problems will be forgotten;
I will no longer think about them.

For look, I am ready to create
new heavens and a new earth!
The former ones will not be remembered;
no one will think about them anymore.

But be happy and rejoice forevermore
over what I am about to create!
For look, I am ready to create Jerusalem to be a source of joy,
and her people to be a source of happiness.

Jerusalem will bring me joy,
and my people will bring me happiness.
The sound of weeping or cries of sorrow
will never be heard in her again.

Never again will one of her infants live just a few days
or an old man die before his time.
Indeed, no one will die before the age of one hundred;
anyone who fails to reach the age of one hundred will be considered cursed.

They will build houses and live in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

No longer will they build a house only to have another live in it,
or plant a vineyard only to have another eat its fruit,
for my people will live as long as trees,
and my chosen ones will enjoy to the fullest what they have produced.

They will not work in vain
or give birth to children that will experience disaster.
For the Lord will bless their children
and their descendants.

Before they even call out, I will respond;
while they are still speaking, I will hear.

A wolf and a lamb will graze together;
a lion, like an ox, will eat straw,
and a snake’s food will be dirt.
They will no longer injure or destroy
on my entire royal mountain,” says the Lord.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Praise

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glory to you, Lord God of our fath-ers;
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
Glory to you for/the radi-ance of your holy Name;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glory to you in/the splen-dor of your tem-ple;
on the throne of your maj-es-ty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated be-tween the Cher-u-bim;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glory to you, be-hold-ing the depths;
in the high vault of heav-en, glory to you.
Glory to you, Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

May God bless us!
May God, our God, bless us!
Then all the ends of/the earth
will give him the honor he de-serves.

May God show us his favor and bless us!
May he smile up-on us!
Then those living on earth will know what you are like;
all na-tions will know how you de-liver your peo-ple.

Let foreign-ers re-joice and cel-e-brate!
For you exe-cute jus-tice a-mong the na-tions,

Let Is-ra-el say.
Since my youth they have at-tacked me,
They have often at-tacked me,
but they have not de-feated me.

The plow-ers plowed my back;
they made their fur-rows long.
The Lord is just;
he cut the ropes of/the wick-ed.

May all who hate Zi-on
be hu-mili-at-ed and turned back!
May they be like the grass on/the roof tops
which withers be-fore one can even pull it up,

which cannot fill the reap-ers hand,
or the lap of/the one who gathers the grain!
Those who pass by will not say,
May you ex-peri-ence the Lord's bles-sing!

In/the name of/the Lord.
We pro-nounce a bles-sing on you
In/the name of/the Lord
May all God's people be blessed!

Glo-ry to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from John 8:12-19

Then Jesus spoke out again, “I am the light of the world! The one who follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” So the Pharisees objected, “You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!” Jesus answered, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people do not know where I came from or where I am going. You people judge by outward appearances; I do not judge anyone. But if I judge, my evaluation is accurate because I am not alone when I judge, but I and the Father who sent me do so together. It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. I testify about myself and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”

Then they began asking him, “Who is your father?” Jesus answered, “You do not know either me or my Father. If you knew me you would know my Father too.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!
