Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.
Amen
May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.
Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ. Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness; let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.
Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense, the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice. I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel; my heart teaches me, night after night.
I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me; be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son, and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit: as it was in/the be-ginning, is now, and will be for-ever A-men.
O Gracious Light
O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
you are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
Psalm 79Deus, veneruntBCP p. 701 O God, the heathen have come into your inheritance;they have profaned your holy temple; *they have made Jerusalem a heap of rubble. They have given the bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the air, *and the flesh of your faithful ones to the beasts of the field. They have shed their blood like water on every side of Jerusalem, *and there was no one to bury them. We have become a reproach to our neighbors, *an object of scorn and derision to those around us. How long will you be angry, O Lord? *will your fury blaze like fire for ever? Pour out your wrath upon the heathen who have not known you *and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon your Name. For they have devoured Jacob *and made his dwelling a ruin. Remember not our past sins;let your compassion be swift to meet us; *for we have been brought very low. Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your Name; *deliver us and forgive us our sins, for your Name’s sake. Why should the heathen say, “Where is their God?” *Let it be known among the heathen and in our sightthat you avenge the shedding of your servants’ blood. Let the sorrowful sighing of the prisoners come before you, *and by your great might spare those who are condemned to die. May the revilings with which they reviled you, O Lord, *return seven-fold into their bosoms. For we are your people and the sheep of your pasture; *we will give you thanks for everand show forth your praise from age to age.
Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son, and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit: as it was in/the be-ginning, is now, and will be for-ever A-men.
A Reading from the Gospel According to Luke. (Luke [1:1-4],3:1-14)
[Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.]
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”
John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”
We/be-lieve in God, the Father al-might-y, cre-ator of heaven and earth. We/be-lieve in Je-sus Christ, his on-ly son, our Lord.
He was/con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y. He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late, was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.
He de-scended to/the dead. On/the third day he rose a-gain. He a-scended into heav-en, and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.
He will come a-gain to judge the living and the dead. We/be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit, the _ holy catho-lic Church,
the com-munion of saints, the for-give-ness of sins, the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y, and the life ever-lasting. A-men.
Show us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your sal-va-tion. Clothe your minis-ters with righteous-ness; Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safe-ty. Lord, keep this nation under your care; And guide us in/the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known up-on earth; Your saving health among all na-tions. Let not the needy, O Lord, be for-got-ten; Nor the hope of/the poor be taken a-way.
Cre-ate in us clean hearts, O God; And sus-tain us by your Holy Spi-rit. Show us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your sal-va-tion.
The Collect of the Day
O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
A Collect for Peace
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for Mission
O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Al-might-y God, you have given us grace at this time with one ac-cord to make our common suppli-cation to you;
and you have prom-ised through your well be-loved Son that when two/or three are gathered in his Name you will be in/the midst of them:
Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
Let us bless the Lord. Alle-lu-ia, Alle-lu-ia! Thanks be to God. Alle-lu-ia, Alle-lu-ia! Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infi-nite-ly more than we can ask or im-ag-ine
Glory to him from gener-a-tion to gener-a-tion in/the Church, and in Christ Je-sus for-ever and ever A-men. Let us bless the Lord. Alle-lu-ia, Alle-lu-ia! Thanks be to God. Alle-lu-ia, Alle-lu-ia!
