Evening Prayer - August 30 2022

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Tuesday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 36Dixit injustusBCP p. 632
There is a voice of rebellion deep in the heart of the wicked; *there is no fear of God before his eyes.
He flatters himself in his own eyes *that his hateful sin will not be found out.
The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; *he has left off acting wisely and doing good.
He thinks up wickedness upon his bedand has set himself in no good way; *he does not abhor that which is evil.
Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, *and your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,your justice like the great deep; *you save both man and beast, O Lord.
How priceless is your love, O God! *your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
They feast upon the abundance of your house; *you give them drink from the river of your delights.
For with you is the well of life, *and in your light we see light.
Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, *and your favor to those who are true of heart.
Let not the foot of the proud come near me, *nor the hand of the wicked push me aside.
See how they are fallen, those who work wickedness! *they are cast down and shall not be able to rise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A Reading from the Gospel According to John.        (John 8:33-47)

They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word.

I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.” They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing what Abraham did, but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are indeed doing what your father does.” They said to him, “We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself.”

Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word. You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is from God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear them is that you are not from God.”

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Song of Mary        Luke 1:46-55        Magnificat
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;*
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:*
the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,*
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

LEVAS2 (145): Have Thine own way, Lord

Piano    PARTS

1 Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Thou art the potter,
I am the clay!
Mold me and make me
After thy will,
While I am waiting,
Yielded and still.
2 Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Search me and try me,
Master, today!
Purer than snow, Lord,
Wash me just now,
As in thy presence
Humbly I bow.
3 Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Wounded and weary,
Help me, I pray!
Power all power
Surely is thine!
Touch me and heal me,
Savior divine!

4 Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Hold o’er my being
Absolute sway!
Fill with thy Spirit
’Til all shall see
Christ only, always,
Living in me!

Piano     PARTS     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

1 O for a thousand tongues to sing
my dear Redeemer's praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!

2 My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
and spread through all the earth abroad
the honors of thy Name.

3 Jesus! the Name that charms our fears
and bids our sorrows cease;
'tis music in the sinner's ears,
'tis life and health and peace.

4 He speaks; and, listening to his voice,
new life the dead receive,
the mournful broken hearts rejoice,
the humble poor believe.

5 Hear him, ye deaf; ye voiceless ones,
your loosened tongues employ;
ye blind, behold your Savior comes;
and leap, ye lame, for joy!

6 Glory to God and praise and love
be now and ever given
by saints below and saints above,
the church in earth and heaven.

Psalm 9Confitebor tibiBCP p. 593
Iwill give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; *I will tell of all your marvelous works.
I will be glad and rejoice in you; *I will sing to your Name, O Most High.
When my enemies are driven back, *they will stumble and perish at your presence.
For you have maintained my right and my cause; *you sit upon your throne judging right.
You have rebuked the ungodly and destroyed the wicked; *you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
As for the enemy, they are finished, in perpetual ruin, *their cities plowed under, the memory of them perished;
But the Lord is enthroned for ever; *he has set up this throne for judgment.
It is he who rules the world with righteousness; *he judges the peoples with equity.
The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, *a refuge in time of trouble.
Those who know your Name will put their trust in you, *for you never forsake those who seek you, O Lord.
Sing praise to the Lord who dwells in Zion; *proclaim to the peoples the things he has done.
The Avenger of blood will remember them; *he will not forget the cry of the afflicted.
Have pity on me, O Lord; *see the misery I suffer from those who hate me,O you who lift me up from the gate of death;
So that I may tell of all your praisesand rejoice in your salvation *in the gates of the city of Zion.
The ungodly have fallen into the pit they dug, *and in the snare they set is their own foot caught.
The Lord is known by his acts of justice; *the wicked are trapped in the works of their own hands.
The wicked shall be given over to the grave, *and also all the people that forget God.
For the needy shall not always be forgotten, *and the hope of the poor shall not perish for ever.
Rise up, O Lord, let not the ungodly have the upper hand; *let them be judged before you.
Put fear upon them, O Lord; *let the ungodly know they are but mortal.

A Reading from the Gospel According to John.                    (John 8:21-32)

Again he said to them, “I am going away, and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” Then the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself? Is that what he means by saying, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.”

They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I speak to you at all? I have much to say about you and much to condemn; but the one who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father.

So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak these things as the Father instructed me. And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.” As he was saying these things, many believed in him.

Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Song of Simeon        Luke 2:29-32        Nunc dimittis

Lord, you now have set your servant free*
to go in peace as you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,*
whom you have prepared for all the world to see:
A Light to enlighten the nations,*
and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

A Gospel according to John 19:23-27

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it." This was to fulfill what the scripture says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots."

25 And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son." 27 Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
