Tuesday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Worship the Lord in/the beauty of his holi-ness;
let/the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth/in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up/of my hands as/the evening sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives/me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set/the Lord always be-fore me;
be-cause he is/at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed/to save us.
O Lord, make haste/to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Tuesday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gracious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-living Father in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your praises, O God!

Now as/we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold/the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and/to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 68

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

God springs into ac-tion!
His _ ene-mies scat-ter;
his adver-saries run from him.
As smoke is driven a-way by/the wind,

So you drive them a-way.
As wax melts be-fore fire,
so the wicked are de-stroyed be-fore God.
But the god-ly are hap-py;

They re-joice be-fore God
and are over-come with joy.
Sing to God! Sing praises to his name!
Ex-alt the one who rides on/the clouds!

For the Lord is his name!
Re-joice be-fore the Lord!
He is a father to/the father-less
and an advo-cate for wid-ows.

God rules from his holy dwell-ing place.
God settles those who have been de-serted in their own home;
he frees prison-ers and grants them pros-peri-ty.
But sinful rebels live in/the de-sert.

O God, when you lead your people into bat-tle,
when you march through the waste-land,
the earth shakes, yes,
the heavens pour down rain be-fore God,

The God of Si-nai,
be-fore God, the God of Isra-el.
O God, you cause a-bundant show-ers
to fall on your chosen peo-ple.

When they are tired, you sus-tain them,
for you live a-mong them.
You sus-tain the op-pressed
with your good blessing, O God.

The Lord speaks; many, many women spread the good news.
Kings leading ar-mies run a-way!
They run a-way!
The lady of/the house di-vides the spoils.

When you lie down a-mong the sheep-fold,
the wings of/the dove are covered with sil-ver
and with glitter-ing gold.
When the Sovereign One scatters kings,

Let it snow on Zal-mon!
The mountain of Ba-shan is a tower-ing moun-tain;
the mountain of Ba-shan is a mountain with many peaks.
Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks,

At/the mountain where God has de-cided to live?
In-deed the Lord will live there perma-nent-ly!
God has count-less char-i-ots;
they num-ber in/the thou-sands.

The Lord comes from Si-nai in holy splen-dor.
You as-cend on high, you have taken many cap-tives.
You re-ceive tribute from men,
in-cluding even sinful re-bels.

In-deed the Lord God lives there!
The Lord de-serves our praise!
Day after day he carries our bur-dens,
the God who de-livers us.

Our God is a God who de-liv-ers;
the Lord, the sovereign Lord, can rescue from death.
In-deed God strikes the heads of his ene-mies,
the hairy foreheads of those who per-sist in re-bel-lion.

The Lord says, I will re-trieve them from Ba-shan,
I will bring them back from/the depths of/the sea,
so that your feet may stomp in their blood,
and your dogs may eat their portion of/the ene-mies'' corps-es.

They see your pro-cessions, O God
the pro-cessions of my God, my king,
who marches a-long in holy splen-dor.
Singers walk in front; mu-sicians fol-low

Play-ing their stringed instru-ments,
in the midst of young women playing tam-bou-rines.
In your large as-semblies praise God,
Praise the Lord, in/the as-semblies of Is-ra-el!

There is little Benja-min, their rul-er,
and the princes of Ju-dah in their robes,
a-long with/the princes of Zeb-ul-un
and the princes of Naph-ta-li.

God has de-creed that you will be power-ful.
O God, you who have acted on our be-half,
demon-strate your power.
Be-cause of your temple in Jeru-sa-lem,

Kings bring tribute to you.
Sound your battle cry a-gainst the wild beast of/the reed,
and the nations that as-sem-ble
like a herd of calves led by bulls!

They hum-ble them-selves
and offer gold and silver as trib-ute.
God scatters the na-tions
that like to do bat-tle.

They come with red cloth from E-gypt,
Ethi-o-pi-a volun-tar-ily offers tribute to God.
O kingdoms of/the earth, sing to God!
Sing _ prais-es to/the Lord,

To the one who rides through/the sky from ancient times!
Look! He thun-ders loud-ly.
Ac-knowl-edge God's power,
his sovereign-ty over Is-ra-el,

And the power he re-veals in/the sky!
You are awe-in-spir-ing, O God,
as you e-merge from your holy tem-ple!
It is the God of Isra-el who gives the people power and strength.

God de-serves praise!
Look! He thun-ders loud-ly.
Ac-knowl-edge God's power,
his sovereign-ty over Is-ra-el,

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.

So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him.

Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Glory to God

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glory to God in/the high-est,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heaven-ly King,
al-might-y God and Fath-er,

We worship you, we give you thanks,
We praise you for your glo-ry.
Lord Je-sus Christ, only Son of/the Fath-er,
Lord God, _ Lamb of God,

You take/a-way the sin of/the world:
have mer-cy up-on us;
you are seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er:
re-ceive _ our pray-er.

For you a-lone are/the Ho-ly One,
You a-lone are the Lord,
You a-lone are/the Most High, Je-sus Christ,
with/the Ho-ly Spi-rit, in/the glory of God the Fath-er.

A reading from Matthew 6:7-15

"When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

"Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Second Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Seek/the Lord while he wills to/be found;
call/up-on him when he draws near.
Let/the wicked for-sake their ways
and the evil ones their thoughts;

And let them turn to/the Lord,
and he will have com-pas-sion,
Let them/re-turn/to our God,
for he will richly par-don.

For my thoughts are/not your thoughts,
nor your ways my ways, says/the Lord.
For as/the heavens are higher than the earth,
so/are my ways higher than your ways,

and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For/as rain and snow fall from/the heav-ens
and re-turn not/a-gain,
but wat-er the whole earth,

Bring-ing forth life
and giving a-bun-dant growth
And seed for re-plan-ting
and bread/and fruit for eat-ing,

So/is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it will not/re-turn/to me emp-ty;
But/it will ac-complish that which I have pur-posed,
and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

On/the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Father in heav-en,

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Aid against Perils

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common suppli-cation to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well be-loved Son
that when two/or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowledge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
