O gracious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-living Father in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!

Now as/we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold/the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,

Psalm 106:19-48

They made an image of/a calf at Ho-reb,
and worshiped a metal i-dol.
They traded their ma-jes-tic God
for the image of/an ox that eats grass.

They re-jected the God who de-livered them,
the one who per-formed great deeds in E-gypt,
a-mazing feats in/the land of Ham,
and mighty acts by/the Red Sea.

He threatened to de-stroy them,
but Mo-ses, his chosen one,
inter-ced-ed with him
and turned back his de-structive an-ger.

They re-jected the fruit-ful land;
they did/not be-lieve his prom-ise.
They grumbled in their tents;
they did/not o-bey the Lord.

So he made a solemn vow
that he would make them die in/the wilder-ness,
make their de-scendants die a-mong the na-tions,
and scatter them a-mong foreign lands.

They wor-shiped Ba-al of Pe-or,
and ate sacri-fic-es ofered to/the dead.
They made the Lord angry by their ac-tions,
and a plague broke out/a-mong them.

Phineh-as took/a stand and inter-vened,
and the plague sub-sid-ed.
This was credit-ed to him as a righteous act
for all gener-a-tions to come.

They made him angry by/the waters of Mer-i-bah,
and Mo-ses suffered be-cause of them,
for they a-roused his tem-per,
and so he spoke rash-ly.

They did/not de-stroy the na-tions,
as the Lord had com-manded them to do.
They mixed in with/the na-tions
and learned their pa-gan ways.

They worshiped their i-dols,
which be-came a snare to them.
They sacri-ficed their sons and daughters to de-mons.
They shed _ inno-cent blood,

the blood of/their sons and daugh-ters,
whom they sacri-ficed to/the i-dols of Ca-naan.
The land was pol-luted by blood-shed.
They were de-filed by their deeds,

They were un-faithful in their ac-tions.
So the Lord was angry with his peo-ple
and de-spised the people who be-long to him.
He handed them over to/the na-tions,

and those who hated them ruled over them.
Their ene-mies op-pressed them;
they were subject to their au-thori-ty.
Many times he de-livered them,

but they had a re-bel-lious atti-tude,
and de-graded them-selves by their sin.
Yet he took notice of their dis-tress,
when he heard their cry for help.

He re-membered his cove-nant with them,
and re-lented be-cause of his great loyal love.
He caused all their con-querors to have pity on them.
De-liver us, O Lord, our God!

Gath-er us from a-mong the na-tions!
Then we will give you thanks,
singing praise to your holy name,
and boasting a-bout your praise-worthy deeds.

The Lord God of Isra-el de-serves praise,
in the future and for-ever-more.
Let all the people say,
We a-gree! Praise the Lord!

Readings

A reading from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here.

Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time comes. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now restrains it is removed. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth, annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all power, signs, lying wonders, and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false, so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned.

But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

A reading from Matthew 7:1-12

"Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye. "Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.

"Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.
