Evening Prayer - Thursday March 31 2022

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Thursday after Lent 3 - Eve of the Annunciation

Thursday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Worship the Lord in/the beauty of his holi-ness;
let/the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth/in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up/of my hands as/the evening sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives/me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set/the Lord always be-fore me;
be-cause he is/at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed/to save us.
O Lord, make haste/to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

you are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 73

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Certain-ly God is good to Isra-el,
and to those whose motives are pure!
But as for me, my feet al-most slipped;
my feet al-most slid out from under me.

For I envied those who are proud,
as I ob-served the pros-peri-ty of/the wick-ed.
For they suffer no pain;
their bodies are strong and well-fed.

They are im-mune to/the trou-ble common to men;
they do not suffer as other men do.
Arro-gance is their neck-lace,
and vio-lence covers them like cloth-ing.

Their pros-peri-ty causes them to do wrong;
All their thoughts are sin-ful.
They mock and say evil things;
they proud-ly threaten vio-lence.

They speak as if they rule in heav-en,
and they lay claim to/the earth.
There-fore they have more than e-nough food to eat,
and even suck up the water of/the sea.

They say, How does God know what we do?
Is the Most High a-ware of what goes on?
Take a good look! This is what the wicked are like,
Those who al-ways have it so eas-y

They get richer and rich-er.
Sure-ly in vain I have kept my motives pure
and main-tained a pure life-style.
I suf-fer all day long,

I am punished eve-ry morn-ing.
If I had publi-cized these thoughts,
I would have be-trayed your peo-ple.
When I tried to make sense of this,

it was troubling to me.
Then I entered the pre-cincts of God's tem-ple,
and under-stood the desti-ny of/the wick-ed.
Sure-ly you put them in slipper-y plac-es;

You bring them down to ruin.
How deso-late they be-come in a mere mo-ment!
Terri-fying judg-ments make their de-mise com-plete!
They are like a dream after one wakes up.

O Lord, when you a-wake you will de-spise them.
Yes, my spirit was bit-ter,
and my in-sides felt sharp pain.
I was igno-rant and lacked in-sight;

I was as senseless as an ani-mal be-fore you.
But I am con-tinual-ly with you;
And you hold my right hand.
You guide me by your wise ad-vice,

and then you will lead me
to a po-sition of hon-or.
Whom do I have in heaven but you?
I de-sire no one but you on earth.

My flesh and my heart may grow weak,
but God always pro-tects my heart
and gives me sta-bil-i-ty.
Yes, look! Those far from you die;

You de-stroy every-one who is un-faithful to you.
But as for me, God's pres-ence is all I need.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my shel-ter,
as I de-clare all/the things you have done.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from 1 Corinthians 12:12-26

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many.

If the foot would say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?

But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this.

But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of the Redeemed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O ruler of/the uni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-passing human under-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of righteous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ag-es.
Who can fail to do you homage, Lord,
and sing the praises of your Name?
for you only are the Holy One.

All nations will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and holy works
have been re-vealed. Alle-lu-ia, a-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A reading from Mark 8:27-9:1

Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things."

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power."

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Zechariah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Isra-el;
he has come/to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty sav-ior,
born of/the house of his servant Da-vid.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save/us from our ene-mies,
from/the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fath-ers

and to re-member his holy cov-e-nant.
This was/the oath he swore to our father A-bra-ham,
to set us free from/the hands of our ene-mies,
Free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of/the Most High,

for you will go/be-fore the Lord to/pre-pare his way,
To give his people knowledge of sal-va-tion
by the for-giveness of their sins.
In/the tender com-passion of our God

the dawn from/on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those/who dwell in dark-ness
and in/the shadow of death,
and/to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

in the com-munion of Barna-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one/an-other and all our life to Christ,

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

O God of eternal glory, whom no one living can see and yet whom to see is to live; grant that with your servant John Donne, we may see your glory in the face of your Son, Jesus Christ, and then, with all our skill and wit, offer you our crown of prayer and praise, until by his grace we stand in that last and everlasting day, when death itself will die, and all will live in you, who with the Holy Spirit and the same Lord Jesus Christ are one God in everlasting light and glory.

Amen.

We pray for peace and especially for the people of Ukraine, saying together,

Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Sequence:   H 380 - Doxology

Offertory:  H-474 - When I survey the wondrous cross

LEVAS2 (L165)   Higher Ground

RECORDINGS: Piano     PARTS     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

1 I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
Refrain:
Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith, on heaven’s table land;
A higher plane than I have found,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2 My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim is higher ground. [Refrain]
3 I want to live above the world,
Though satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught a joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground. [Refrain]
4 I want to scale the utmost height,
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till heav’n I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on the higher ground.” [Refrain]

Hymnal 1982 - H-380 - Doxology

Recordings: Piano    Parts     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

{Before the Gospel}

1 From all that dwell below the skies
let the Creator’s praise arise!
Let the Redeemer’s Name be sung
through every land, by every tongue!

2 Eternal are thy mercies, Lord,
and truth eternal is thy word:
thy praise shall sound from shore to shore
till suns shall rise and set no more.

{Last verse after the gospel}

3 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host:
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

The Nicene Creed (when sung: Hymnal 1982 – S105)

Recordings:      Accompaniment     Voices

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of his Father.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried;

On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory,
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, and giver of Life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offering:    H-474 - When I survey the wondrous cross

1 When I survey the wondrous cross
where the young Prince of Glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the cross of Christ, my God:
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

W-785 Santo! Santo! Santo!

SCAN:  Sheet Music

1 My faith looks up to thee,
Thou lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away;
O let me from this day
Be wholly thine.

2 May thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire;
As thou hast died for me,
O may my love to thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be
A living fire.

3 While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn today,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away;
Pure, warm, and changeless be
A living fire.

4 When ends life’s transient dream,
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll;
Blest Savior, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove,
O bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul.

1 If the world from you withhold
of its silver and gold,
And you have to get along with meager fare;
Just remember in His word.
How He feeds the little bird.
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.
Refrain:
Leave it there, leave it there, leave it there, leave it there,
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there, leave it there.
If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out;
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there, leave it there.
2 If your body suffers pain,
and your health you can’t regain,
And your soul is almost sinking in despair;
Jesus knows the pain you feel.
He can save and He can heal.[Refrain]
3 When your enemies assail,
and your heart begins to fail,
Don’t forget that God in heaven answers prayer.
He will make a way for you,
and will lead you safely through.
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. [Refrain]
4 When your youthful days are gone,
and old age is stealing on.
And your body bends beneath the weight of care;
He will never leave you then,
He’ll go with you to the end.
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. [Refrain]
