Listen, O God, to my prayer!
Don't ig-nore my ap-peal for mer-cy!
Pay at-tention to me and an-swer me!
I am so up-set and dis-tressed,

I am be-side my-self,
be-cause/of what the ene-my says,
and be-cause/of how the wicked pressure me,
for they hurl trou-ble down up-on me

and angri-ly at-tack me.
My heart beats vio-lent-ly with-in me;
the horrors of death over-come me.
Fear and panic over-power me;

Terror over-whelms me.
I say, I wish I had wings like/a dove!
I would fly/a-way and settle in a safe place!
Look, I will es-cape to a distant place;

I will stay in/the wilder-ness.
I will hurry off to/a place that/is safe
from the strong wind and/the gale.
Con-fuse them, O Lord! Frus-trate their plan!

For I see vio-lence and con-flict in/the cit-y.
Day and night they walk/a-round on its walls,
while wicked-ness and de-struction are with-in it.
Dis-aster is with-in it;

Vio-lence and de-ceit don't de-part from its public square.
In-deed, it is not an ene-my who in-sults me,
or else I could bear it;
it isn't one who hates me who arro-gantly taunts me,

or else I could hide from him.
But it is you, a man like me,
my close friend in whom I con-fid-ed.
We would share person-al thoughts with each oth-er;

In God's temple we would walk/to-gether a-mong the crowd.
May death de-stroy them! May they go down/a-live into She-ol!
For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.
As/for me, I will call out/to God,

and the Lord will de-liver me.
During the evening, morning, and noon-time
I will la-ment and moan, and he will hear me.
He will res-cue me and pro-tect me from those/who at-tack me,

Even though they greatly out-number me.
God, the one who/has reigned as king from long/a-go,
will hear and hu-mili-ate them.
They re-fuse to change, and do/not fear God.

He at-tacks his friends;
he breaks his solemn promis-es to them.
His words are as smooth as but-ter,
but he harbors ani-mosi-ty in his heart.

His words seem softer than oil,
but they are really like sharp swords.
Throw your burden up-on the Lord,
and he will sus-tain you.

He will never al-low the godly to be shak-en.
But you, O God, will bring them down to/the deep Pit.
Vio-lent and de-ceitful people will not live even half/a normal life span.
But as/for me, I trust in you.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:

Readings

A reading from Genesis 18:1-16

The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, "My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said." And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes." Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

They said to him, "Where is your wife Sarah?" And he said, "There, in the tent." Then one said, "I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?" The LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too wonderful for the LORD? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son." But Sarah denied, saying, "I did not laugh"; for she was afraid. He said, "Oh yes, you did laugh."

Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way.

Give thanks to/the Lord and call up-on his Name;

A reading from John 6:16-27

When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid." Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal."

A Collect for Saturdays

Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
