lest he come sudden-ly and find you a-sleep.

In/the wilder-ness pre-pare the way of/the Lord,
make straight in/the desert a highway for our God.
The glory of/the Lord shall be re-vealed,
and all flesh shall see/it to-geth-er.

The hour is coming, and now is,
when the true wor-ship-ers
will wor-ship the Fath-er
in spi-rit and in truth,

for such are the follow-ers
the Fath-er seeks to wor-ship him.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouths shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,

How long will you re-main an-gry
at your people while they pray to you?
You have given them tears as food;

Smile on us! Then we will be de-liv-ered!

You up-rooted a vine from E-gypt;
you drove out na-tions and trans-planted it.

it took root, and filled the land.

The mountains were covered by its shad-ow,
the highest ce-dars by its branch.
Its branches reached the Medi-ter-ra-nean Sea,
and its shoots the Eu-phra-tes Riv-er.

Why did you break down its wall,
so that all who pass by pluck its fruit?
The wild boars of/the forest ru-in it;
the in-sects of/the field feed on it.

O God of Heaven's Ar-my, come back!
Look down from heaven and take no-tice!
Take care of this vine, the root your right hand plant-ed,
the shoot you made to grow!

It is burned and cut down.
They die be-cause you are dis-pleased with them.
May you give sup-port to/the one you have cho-sen,
to the one whom you raised up for your-self!

Then we will not turn a-way from you.
Re-vive us and we will pray to you!
O Lord God of Heaven's Ar-my, re-store us!
Smile on us! Then we will be de-liv-ered!

A reading from 2 Samuel 7:18-29

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and said, "Who am I, O Lord , and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord ; you have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come. May this be instruction for the people, O Lord !And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord !Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have wrought all this greatness, so that your servant may know it. Therefore you are great, O LORD God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. Who is like your people, like Israel? Is there another nation on earth whose God went to redeem it as a people, and to make a name for himself, doing great and awesome things for them, by driving out before his people nations and their gods? And you established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever; and you, O LORD, became their God. And now, O LORD God, as for the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it forever; do as you have promised. Thus your name will be magnified forever in the saying, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel'; and the house of your servant David will be established before you. For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, 'I will build you a house'; therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. And now, O Lord , you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant;now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you; for you, O Lord , have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever. "

A reading from Luke 1:57-66

Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, "No; he is to be called John. "They said to her, "None of your relatives has this name. "Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John. " And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbors, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, "What then will this child become? " For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
