Invitation

Monday - Advent Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Watch, for you know not when
the master of/the house will come,
at dusk, by night, at dawn, or by day;
lest he come sudden-ly and find you a-sleep.

In/the wilder-ness pre-pare the way of/the Lord,
make straight in/the desert a highway for our God.
The glory of/the Lord shall be re-vealed,
and all flesh shall see/it to-geth-er.

The hour is coming, and now is,
when the true wor-ship-ers
will wor-ship the Fath-er
in spi-rit and in truth,

for such are the follow-ers
the Fath-er seeks to wor-ship him.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouths shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Monday - Venite

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 41

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

How blessed is the one who treats the poor proper-ly!
When trouble comes, may the Lord de-liver him.
May the Lord pro-tect him and save his life!
May he be blessed in/the land!

Do not turn him over to his ene-mies!
The Lord sup-ports him on his sick bed;
you have healed him from his ill-ness.
As/for me, I said: O Lord, have mercy on me!

Heal me, for I have sinned a-gainst you!
My ene-mies ask this cruel question a-bout me,
When will he final-ly die and be for-got-ten?
When someone comes to visit, he pre-tends to/be friend-ly;

He thinks of ways to de-fame me,
and when he leaves he slanders me.
All who hate me whisper insults a-bout me to one/an-oth-er;
they plan ways to harm me.

They say, An awful dis-ease over-whelms him,
and now that he is bed-ridden he will never re-cov-er.
Even my close friend whom I trust-ed,
he who shared meals with me, has turned a-gainst me.

As/for you, O Lord, have mercy on me
and raise me up, so I can pay them back!
By this I know that you are pleased with me,
for my ene-my does not triumph over me.

As/for me, you up-hold me be-cause/of my in-tegri-ty;
you al-low me perma-nent access to your pres-ence.
The Lord God of Isra-el de-serves praise
in the fu-ture and for-ever-more! A-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Psalm 52

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Why do you boast a-bout your evil plan, O power-ful man?
God's loyal love pro-tects me all day long!
Your tongue carries out your de-structive plan;
it is as ef-fective as/a sharp razor, O de-ceiv-er.

You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth.
You love to use all the words that de-stroy,
and the tongue that de-ceives.

Yet God will make you a perma-nent heap of ruins.
He will scoop you up and re-move you from your home;
he will up-root you from/the land of/the liv-ing.
When the god-ly see this, they will be filled with awe,

And will mock the evil-doer, say-ing:
Look, here is the man who would not make God his pro-tec-tor!
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confi-dent a-bout his plans to de-stroy oth-ers.

But I am like a flourish-ing olive tree in/the house of God;
I con-tinual-ly trust in God's loyal love.
I will con-tinual-ly thank you when you exe-cute judg-ment;
I will re-ly on you, for your loyal follow-ers know you are good.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Zechariah 1:7-17

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo; and Zechariah said, In the night I saw a man riding on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the glen; and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses. Then I said, "What are these, my lord? " The angel who talked with me said to me, "I will show you what they are. "So the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered, "They are those whom the LORD has sent to patrol the earth. "Then they spoke to the angel of the LORD who was standing among the myrtle trees, "We have patrolled the earth, and lo, the whole earth remains at peace. "Then the angel of the LORD said, "O LORD of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years? "Then the LORD replied with gracious and comforting words to the angel who talked with me. So the angel who talked with me said to me, Proclaim this message: Thus says the LORD of hosts; I am very jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion. And I am extremely angry with the nations that are at ease; for while I was only a little angry, they made the disaster worse. Therefore, thus says the LORD, I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion; my house shall be built in it, says the LORD of hosts, and the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem. Proclaim further: Thus says the LORD of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity; the LORD will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Monday - Song of Praise

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glory to you, Lord God of our fath-ers;
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
Glory to you for/the radi-ance of your holy Name;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glory to you in/the splen-dor of your tem-ple;
on the throne of your maj-es-ty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated be-tween the Cher-u-bim;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glory to you, be-hold-ing the depths;
in the high vault of heav-en, glory to you.
Glory to you, Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

A reading from Matthew 24:15-31

“So when you see the abomination of desolation – spoken about by Daniel the prophet – standing in the holy place” (let the reader understand), “then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. The one on the roof must not come down to take anything out of his house, and the one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great suffering unlike anything that has happened from the beginning of the world until now, or ever will happen. And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe him. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Remember, I have told you ahead of time. So then, if someone says to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe him. For just like the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

“Immediately after the suffering of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man arriving on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet blast, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Monday - Song of Simeon

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, you now have set your servant free
to go/in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-lighten the na-tions,
and the glory of your people Is-ra-el.
Lord, you now have set your servant free
to go/in peace as you have prom-ised;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever. A-men.

Save your people, Lord,
and bless your in-herit-ance;
Govern and guide them, Lord
and up-hold them, now and al-ways.

Day by day we bless you;
We praise your name for-ever.
Lord, keep us from all sin to-day;
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mer-cy.

Lord, show us your love and mer-cy;
For we put our trust in you.
In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.

Collects of the Day

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper all who labor to gather them, that we, who are constantly receiving good things from your hand, may always give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

A Collect for the Renewal of Life

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

we your un-worthy servants give you hum-ble thanks
for all your goodness and loving kind-ness

And, we pray, give/us such/an a-ware-ness of your mer-cy,

we may show forth your praise,

not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our-selves to your ser-vice,
and by walking be-fore you
in holi-ness and righteous-ness all our days;

through Je-sus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
be hon-or and glo-ry
through-out all the ag-es. A--men.
