Friday - Advent Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Watch, for you know not when
the master of/the house will come,
at dusk, by night, at dawn, or by day;
lest he come sudden-ly and find you a-sleep.

In/the wilder-ness pre-pare the way of/the Lord,
make straight in/the desert a highway for our God.
The glory of/the Lord shall be re-vealed,
and all flesh shall see/it to-geth-er.

The hour is coming, and now is,
when the true wor-ship-ers
will wor-ship the Fath-er
in spi-rit and in truth,

for such are the follow-ers
the Fath-er seeks to wor-ship him.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouths shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Friday - Venite

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 40

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

I re-lied com-pletely on/the Lord,
and he turned toward me and heard my cry for help.
He lifted me out of/the water-y pit,
out _ of/the slim-y mud.

He placed my feet on//a rock
and gave me se-cure foot-ing.
He gave me reason to sing/a new song, praising our God.
May many see what God has done,

So that they might swear al-legiance to him and trust in/the Lord!
How blessed is the one who trusts in/the Lord
and does not seek help from/the proud or from li-ars!
O Lord, my God, you have ac-complished many things;

you have done a-mazing things
and carried out your purpos-es for us.
No one can thwart you!
I want/to de-clare them and talk/a-bout them,

but they are too numer-ous to re-count!
Re-ceiving sacri-fic-es and offer-ings are not your pri-mary con-cern.
You make that quite clear to me!
You do/not ask for burnt sacri-fic-es and sin offer-ings.

Then I say, Look! I come!
What is written in/the scroll per-tains to me.
I want/to do what pleases you, my God.
Your law domi-nates my thoughts.

I have told the great as-sembly a-bout your jus-tice.
Look! I spare no words! O Lord, you know this/is true.
I have not failed to tell/a-bout your jus-tice;
I spoke/a-bout your re-lia]-biil-ty and de-liver-ance;

I have not ne-glected to tell the great as-sem-bly
a-bout your loyal love and faithful-ness.
O Lord, you do/not with-hold your com-passion from me.
May your loyal love and faithful-ness con-tinual-ly pro-tect me!

For in-numer-able dangers sur-round me.
My sins over-take me so I am un-able to see;
they out-number the hairs of my head
so my strength is fail-ing me.

Please be willing, O Lord, to res-cue me!
O Lord, hurry and help me!
May those who are trying to snatch a-way my life
be total-ly em-barrassed and a-shamed!

May those who want to harm me
be turned back and a-shamed!
May those who say to me, A-ha! A-ha!
be hu-mili-ated and dis-graced!

May all those who seek you
be happy and re-joice in you!
May those who love to ex-peri-ence your de-liver-ance
say con-tinual-ly, May the Lord be praised!

I am op-pressed and need-y!
May the Lord pay at-tention to me!
You are my helper and my de-liver-er!
O my God, do not de-lay!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever A-men.

Psalm 54

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O God, de-liver me by your name!
Vindi-cate me by your power!
O God, list-en to my prayer!
Pay at-tention to what I say!

For foreign-ers at-tack me;
ruthless men, who don't re-spect God, seek my life.
Look, God is my de-liver-er!
The Lord is a-mong those who sup-port me.

May those who wait to am-bush me
be re-paid for their e-vil!
As a demon-stration of your faithful-ness,
con-found and de-stroy them!

With a free-will offer-ing I will sacri-fice to you!
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good!
Surely he res-cues me from all trou-ble,
and I triumph over my ene-mies.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Zechariah 7:8-8:8

The word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying:Thus says the LORD of hosts: Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another;do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another. But they refused to listen, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears in order not to hear. They made their hearts adamant in order not to hear the law and the words that the LORD of hosts had sent by his spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. Just as, when I called, they would not hear, so, when they called, I would not hear, says the LORD of hosts, and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and a pleasant land was made desolate.

The word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying:Thus says the LORD of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath. Thus says the LORD: I will return to Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the LORD of hosts shall be called the holy mountain. Thus says the LORD of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of their great age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets. Thus says the LORD of hosts: Even though it seems impossible to the remnant of this people in these days, should it also seem impossible to me, says the LORD of hosts? Thus says the LORD of hosts: I will save my people from the east country and from the west country;and I will bring them to live in Jerusalem. They shall be my people and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of Zechariah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Isra-el;
he has come/to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty sav-ior,
born of/the house of his servant Da-vid.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save/us from our ene-mies,
from/the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fath-ers

and to re-member his holy cov-e-nant.
This was/the oath he swore to our father A-bra-ham,
to set us free from/the hands of our ene-mies,
Free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of/the Most High,

for you will go/be-fore the Lord to/pre-pare his way,
To give his people knowledge of sal-va-tion
by the for-giveness of their sins.
In/the tender com-passion of our God

the dawn from/on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those/who dwell in dark-ness
and in/the shadow of death,
and/to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A reading from Matthew 25:14-30

“For it is like a man going on a journey, who summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The one who had received five talents went off right away and put his money to work and gained five more. In the same way, the one who had two gained two more. But the one who had received one talent went out and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money in it. After a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled his accounts with them. The one who had received the five talents came and brought five more, saying, ‘Sir, you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more. ’ His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master. ’ The one with the two talents also came and said, ‘Sir, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more. ’ His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master. ’ Then the one who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Sir, I knew that you were a hard man, harvesting where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours. ’ But his master answered, ‘Evil and lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter? Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received my money back with interest! Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten. For the one who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. And throw that worthless slave into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ’

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song to the Lamb

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Splendor and honor and king-ly power
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-ated every-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-ated and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fami-ly, lan-guage, people, and na-tion,
a kingdom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on/the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be worship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for-ever and for-ever-more.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

We/be-lieve in God, the Father al-might-y,

We/be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was/con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit

was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On/the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We/be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,

Friday - Morning Suffrages B

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Save your people, Lord,
and bless your in-herit-ance;
Govern and guide them, Lord
and up-hold them, now and al-ways.

Day by day we bless you;
We praise your name for-ever.
Lord, keep us from all sin to-day;
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mer-cy.

Lord, show us your love and mer-cy;
For we put our trust in you.
In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.

Collects of the Day

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.

Amen.

and by walking be-fore you
in holi-ness and righteous-ness all our days;
