Friday - Advent Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Watch, for you know not when
the master of/the house will come,
at dusk, by night, at dawn, or by day;
lest he come sudden-ly and find you a-sleep.

In/the wilder-ness pre-pare the way of/the Lord,
make straight in/the desert a highway for our God.
The glory of/the Lord shall be re-vealed,
and all flesh shall see/it to-geth-er.

The hour is coming, and now is,
when the true wor-ship-ers
will wor-ship the Fath-er
in spi-rit and in truth,

for such are the follow-ers
the Fath-er seeks to wor-ship him.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouths shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Friday - Venite

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 16

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Pro-tect me, O God,
for I have taken shelter in you.
I say to/the Lord,
You are the Lord, my only source of well-being.

As for God's chosen people who are in/the land,
and the leading of-ficials I ad-mired so much
their trou-bles multi-ply;
they _ de-sire other gods.

I will not pour out
drink offer-ings of blood to their gods,
nor will I make vows in/the name of their gods.
Lord, you give me sta-bili-ty and pros-peri-ty;

You make my future se-cure.
It is as if I have been given fertile fields
or re-ceived a beauti-ful tract of land.
I will praise the Lord who guides me;

Yes, during the night I re-flect and learn.
I constant-ly trust in/the Lord;
be-cause he is at my right hand,
I will not be shak-en.

So I am hap-py;
and my heart re-joices in God
My life is safe.
You will not a-bandon me to She-ol;

You will not/al-low your follow-er to see the Pit.
You lead me in/the path of life;
I ex-peri-ence abso-lute joy in your pres-ence;
you always give me sheer de-light.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Psalm 17

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, con-sider my just cause!
Pay at-tention to my cry for help!
List-en to/the prayer I sin-cerely of-fer!
Make a just de-cision on my be-half!

De-cide what is right!
You have scrutin-ized my inner mo-tives;
you have ex-amined me during the night.
You have careful-ly e-valu-ated me,

but you find no sin.
I am de-termined I will say nothing sin-ful.
Just as you have com-mand-ed,
I have not followed in/the foot-steps of vio-lent men.

I careful-ly o-bey your com-mands;
I do not devi-ate from them.
I call to you for you will answer me, O God.
List-en to me! Hear what I say!

Ac-complish awe-some, faithful deeds,
you who power-fully de-liver those
who look to you for pro-tection from their ene-mies.
Pro-tect me as you would/the pu-pil of your eye!

Hide me in/the shadow of your wings!
Pro-tect me from/the wicked men who at-tack me,
my ene-mies who crowd a-round me for/the kill.
They are calloused; they speak arro-gant-ly.

They at-tack me, now they sur-round me;
they in-tend to throw me to/the ground.
He is like/a lion that wants/to tear its prey to bits,
like a young lion crouching in hidden plac-es.

Rise up, Lord! Con-front him!
Knock him down! Use your sword
to res-cue me from/the wicked man!
Lord, use your power to de-liver me

from these murder-erz,
from the murder-ers of this world!
They en-joy pros-peri-ty;
you over-whelm them with/the riches they de-sire.

They have many chil-dren,
and leave their wealth to their off-spring.
Be-cause I am inno-cent I will see your face;
when I a-wake you will re-veal your-self to me.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Amos 5:1-17

Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:Fallen, no more to rise, is maiden Israel; forsaken on her land, with no one to raise her up. For thus says the Lord : The city that marched out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which marched out a hundred shall have ten left.

For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: Seek me and live;but do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nothing. Seek the LORD and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground!The one who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth, the LORD is his name,who makes destruction flash out against the strong, so that destruction comes upon the fortress. They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. Therefore because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord: In all the squares there shall be wailing; and in all the streets they shall say, "Alas! alas!" They shall call the farmers to mourning, and those skilled in lamentation, to wailing;in all the vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you, says the LORD.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of Simeon

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-light-en the na-tions,
and the glory of your people Is-ra-el.
Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever. A-men.

A reading from Matthew 22:1-14

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying:"The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet. 'But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business,while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet. 'Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe,and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 'For many are called, but few are chosen. "

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of the Redeemed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O rul-er of/the uni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-pas-sing human under-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of righteous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ag-es.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the praises of your Name?
for you only are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and holy works
have been re-vealed. Alle-lu-ia, a-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Prayers

Friday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

Friday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

De-liver us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,
now and for-ever A-men.

Friday - Morning Suffrages B

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Save your peo-ple, Lord,
and bless your in-herit-ance;
Gov-ern and guide them, Lord
and up-hold them, now and al-ways.

Day by day we bless you;
We praise your name for-ever.
Lord, keep us from all sin to-day;
Have mer-cy on us, Lord, have mer-cy.

Lord, show us your love and mer-cy;
For we put our trust in you.
In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.

Collects of the Day

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.

Amen.

and by walking be-fore you
in holi-ness and righteous-ness all our days;

to whom, with you and the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
be hon-or and glo-ry
through-out all the ag-es. A-men.
