Evening Prayer - Thursday September 30 2021

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Friday - Evensong Invitation

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 105:23-45

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Is-ra-el moved to E-gypt;
Ja-cob lived for/a time in/the land of Ham.
The Lord made his people very fruit-ful,
and made them more numer-ous than their ene-mies.

He caused them to hate his peo-ple,
and to mis-treat his serv-ants.
He sent his serv-ant Mo-ses,
and Aa-ron, whom he had cho-sen.

They exe-cut-ed his mi-racu-lous signs a-mong them,
and his a-mazing deeds in/the land of Ham.
He made it dark;
they did not dis-o-bey his or-ders.

He turned their water into blood,
and He killed all their fish.
Their land was over-run by frogs,
which even got into the rooms of their kings.

He ordered flies to come;
gnats in-vaded their whole terri-to-ry.
He sent hail a-long with/the rain;
there was lightning in their land.

He de-stroyed their vines and fig trees,
and broke the trees through-out their terri-to-ry.
He ordered locusts to come,
in-numer-a-ble grass-hop-pers.

They ate all the vege-ta-tion in their land,
and de-voured the crops of their fields.
He struck down all the first-born in their land,
the first fruits of their repro-duc-tive power.

He brought his people out
en-riched with silver and gold;
none of his tribes stum-bled.
E-gypt was happy when they left,

For they were a-fraid of them.
He spread out a cloud for a cov-er,
and pro-vided a fire to light up/the night.
They asked for food, and he sent quail;

he satis-fied them with food from/the sky.
He o-pened up a rock and water flowed out;
a river ran through dry re-gions.
Yes, he re-membered the sa-cred prom-ise

The prom-ise he made to A-bra-ham his serv-ant.
When he led his people out, they re-joiced;
his chosen ones shouted with joy.
He handed the terri-to-ry of na-tions over to them,

and they took pos-ses-sion
of what other peo-ples had pro-duced,
so that they might keep his com-mands and o-bey his laws.
Praise the Lord! Alle-lu-ia! A-men

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from 1 Corinthians 9:1-15

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you, for you are the confirming sign of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who examine me. Do we not have the right to financial support? Do we not have the right to the company of a believing wife, like the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas? Or do only Barnabas and I lack the right not to work? Who ever serves in the army at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Who tends a flock and does not consume its milk? Am I saying these things only on the basis of common sense, or does the law not say this as well? For it is written in the law of Moses, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” God is not concerned here about oxen, is he? Or is he not surely speaking for our benefit? It was written for us, because the one plowing and threshing ought to work in hope of enjoying the harvest. If we sowed spiritual blessings among you, is it too much to reap material things from you? If others receive this right from you, are we not more deserving?

But we have not made use of this right. Instead we endure everything so that we may not be a hindrance to the gospel of Christ. Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple eat food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar receive a part of the offerings? In the same way the Lord commanded those who proclaim the gospel to receive their living by the gospel. But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing these things so that something will be done for me. In fact, it would be better for me to die than—no one will deprive me of my reason for boasting!

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - You are God

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

You are God: we praise you;
You are the Lord; we ac-claim you;
You are the e-ter-nal Fath-er:
All cre-a-tion wor-ships you.

To you all an-gels, all the powers of heav-en,
Cher-u-bim and Ser-a-phim, sing in end-less praise:
Holy, ho-ly, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heav-en and earth are full of your glo-ry.

The glori-ous compan-y of a-postles praises you.
The no-ble fellow-ship of proph-ets praises you.
The white-robed army of mar-tyrs praises you.
Through-out the world the holy Church ac-claims you;

Fath-er, of majes-ty un-bound-ed,
your true and only Son, worthy of all wor-ship,
and the Ho-ly Spi-rit, advo-cate and guide.
Three in one, we praise you for ev-er.

You, Christ, are the king of glo-ry,
the e-ter-nal Son of/the Fath-er.
When you be-came man to set us free
you did not shun the Vir-gin's womb.

You over-came the sting of death
and o-pened the kingdom of heaven to all be-liev-ers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glo-ry.
We be-lieve that you will come and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your peo-ple,
bought with/the price of your own blood,
and bring us with your saints
to glo-ry ever-last-ing.

A reading from Matthew 7:22-29

On that day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many powerful deeds in your name?’ Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because its foundation had been laid on rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed—it was utterly destroyed!”

When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority, not like their experts in the law.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - First Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Sure-ly, it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be a-fraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure de-fense,
and he will be my Sav-ior.

There-fore you shall draw water with re-joic-ing
from the springs of sal-va-tion.
And on that day you shall say,
Give thanks to/the Lord and call up-on his Name;

Make his deeds known a-mong the peo-ples;
see that they re-member that his Name is ex-alt-ed.
Sing the praises of/the Lord,
for he has done great things,

And this is known in all the world.
Cry a-loud, in-habit-ants of Zi-on, ring out your joy,
for the great one in/the midst of you
is the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Thursday Creed

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

LEVAS2 Hymn 264 - Our Father

Piano    Parts    Soprano    Alto    Tenor    Bass

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil:
for thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever,
Amen.

Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your minis-ters with righteous-ness;
Let your people sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion under your care;
And guide us in/the way of justice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health among all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of/the poor be taken a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, O God;
And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

O Lord, O God of truth, your Word is a lantern to our feet and a light upon our path: We give you thanks for your servant Jerome, and those who, following in his steps, have labored to render the Holy Scriptures in the language of the people; and we pray that your Holy Spirit will overshadow us as we read the written Word, and that Christ, the living Word, will transform us according to your righteous will; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
