when our festi-val be-gins.

For ob-serving the festi-val
is a re-quire-ment for Is-ra-el;
it is an ordi-nance given by/the God of Ja-cob.
He de-creed it as a regu-la-tion in Jo-seph,

when he at-tacked the land of E-gypt.
I heard a voice I did not recog-nize.
It said: I re-moved the burden from his shoul-ders;
his hands were re-leased from holding the bas-kets.

In your dis-tress
you called out and I res-cued you.
I answered you from/a dark thunder-cloud.
I tested you at/the waters of Mer-i-bah.

I said, List-en, my peo-ple!
I will warn you! O Is-ra-el,
if only you would o-bey me!
There must be no other god a-mong you.

You must not wor-ship a foreign god.
I am the Lord, your God,
I am the one who brought you
out of/the land of E-gypt.

Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!
But my people did not o-bey me;
Is-ra-el did not sub-mit to me.
I gave them over to their stubborn de-sire;

they did what seemed right to them.
If only my people would o-bey me!
If only Is-ra-el would keep my com-mands!
Then I would quickly sub-due their ene-mies,

I would at-tack their adver-sar-ies.
May those who hate the Lord
cow-er in fear be-fore him!
May they be perma-nent-ly hu-miil-at-ed!

I would feed Is-ra-el the best wheat,
and would satis-fy your ap-pe-tite
with hon-ey from/the rocky cliff.

Readings

A reading from 1 Corinthians 5:9-6:8

I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people. In no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers and idolaters, since you would then have to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Are you not to judge those inside? But God will judge those outside. Remove the evil person from among you.

When any of you has a legal dispute with another, does he dare go to court before the unrighteous rather than before the saints? Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you not competent to settle trivial suits? Do you not know that we will judge angels? Why not ordinary matters! So if you have ordinary lawsuits, do you appoint as judges those who have no standing in the church? I say this to your shame! Is there no one among you wise enough to settle disputes between fellow Christians? Instead, does a Christian sue a Christian, and do this before unbelievers? The fact that you have lawsuits among yourselves demonstrates that you have already been defeated. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? But you yourselves wrong and cheat, and you do this to your brothers and sisters!

And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your coat also. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to the one who asks you, and do not reject the one who wants to borrow from you.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors do the same, don’t they? And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? Even the Gentiles do the same, don’t they? So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

A Collect for Protection

O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ.
