Praise the Lord! Give thanks to/the Lord,
for he is good, and his loyal love en-dures!
Who can ade-quate-ly re-count the Lord's mighty acts,
or re-late all his praise-worthy deeds?

How blessed are those who pro-mote jus-tice,
and do what is right all the time!
Re-member me, O Lord,
when you show favor to your peo-ple!

Pay at-ten-tion to me,
when _ you de-liver us,
so I may see the pros-per-ty of your chosen one,
and re-joice a-long with your na-tion,

and boast a-long with/the peo-ple
the people who be-long to you.
We have sinned like our an-ces-tors;
we have done wrong, we have done e-vil.

Our an-ces-tors in E-gypt failed
to ap-preci-ate your mi-racu-lous deeds,
they failed to re-member your many acts of loyal love,
and they re-belled at/the sea, by/the Red Sea.

Yet he de-livered them
for the sake of his repu-ta-tion,
that he might re-veal his power.
He shout-ed at/the Red Sea and it dried up;

he led them through the deep wat-er
as if it were a de-sert.
He de-livered them from/the power
of the one who hat-ed them,

and res-cued them from/the power of/the ene-my.
The water cov-ered their ene-mies;
not even one of them sur-vived.
They be-lieved his prom-ise;

They sang praises to him.
but they quickly for-got what he had done;
they did not wait for his in-struc-tions.
In/the wilder-ness they craved for meat;

They challenged God in/the waste-land.
He grant-ed their re-quest,
then struck them with a dis-ease.
In/the camp they re-sented Mo-ses,

and Aa-ron, the Lord's holy priest.
The earth opened up and swal-lowed Da-than;
it en-gulfed the group led by A-bir-am.
Fire burned their group; the flames scorched the wick-ed.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from 2 Samuel 17:24-18:8

Meanwhile David had gone to Mahanaim, while Absalom and all the men of Israel had crossed the Jordan River. Absalom had made Amasa general in command of the army in place of Joab. (Now Amasa was the son of an Israelite man named Jether, who had married Abigail the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.) The army of Israel and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Makir the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim brought bedding, basins, and pottery utensils. They also brought food for David and all who were with him, including wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils, honey, curds, flocks, and cheese. For they said, “The people are no doubt hungry, tired, and thirsty there in the desert.”

David assembled the army that was with him. He appointed leaders of thousands and leaders of hundreds. David then sent out the army—a third under the leadership of Joab, a third under the leadership of Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under the leadership of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the troops, “I too will indeed march out with you.”

But the soldiers replied, “You should not do this! For if we should have to make a rapid retreat, they won’t be concerned about us. Even if half of us should die, they won’t be concerned. But you are like 10,000 of us! So it is better if you remain in the city for support.” Then the king said to them, “I will do whatever seems best to you.”

So the king stayed beside the city gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands. The king gave this order to Joab, Abishai, and Ittai: “For my sake deal gently with the young man Absalom.” Now the entire army was listening when the king gave all the leaders this order concerning Absalom.

Then the army marched out to the field to fight against Israel. The battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. The army of Israel was defeated there by David’s men. The slaughter there was great that day—20,000 soldiers were killed. The battle there was spread out over the whole area, and the forest consumed more soldiers than the sword devoured that day.

A reading from Mark 11:12-26

Now the next day, as they went out from Bethany, he was hungry. After noticing in the distance a fig tree with leaves, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it. When he came to it he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Then they came to Jerusalem. Jesus entered the temple area and began to drive out those who were selling and buying in the temple courts. He turned over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves, and he would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. Then he began to teach them and said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have turned it into a den of robbers!” The chief priests and the experts in the law heard it, and they considered how they could assassinate him, for they feared him because the whole crowd was amazed by his teaching. When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city.

In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered.” Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, if someone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. For this reason I tell you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your sins.”

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper all who labor to gather them, that we, who are constantly receiving good things from your hand, may always give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

A Collect for the Renewal of Life

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
