Evening Prayer - Monday August 09 2021

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Monday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

you are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 89:19-52

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Then you spoke through a vi-sion
to your faithful follow-ers and said:
I have placed a young he-ro over a warri-or;
I have raised up/a young man from/the peo-ple.

I have dis-covered Da-vid, my serv-ant.
With my holy oil I have a-nointed him as king.
My hand will sup-port him,
and my arm will strength-en him.

No ene-my will be able to ex-act trib-ute from him;
a vio-lent op-pressor will not be able to hu-mili-ate him.
I will crush his ene-mies be-fore him;
I will strike down those who hate him.

He will ex-peri-ence my faithful-ness and loyal love,
and by my name he will win vic-to-ry.
I will place his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the riv-ers.

He will call out to me,
You are my fath-er, my God,
and the pro-tec-tor who de-livers me.
I will ap-point him to be my first-born son,

the most ex-alt-ed of/the earth's kings.
I will al-ways ex-tend my loyal love to him,
and my cove-nant with him is se-cure.
I will give him an e-ternal dy-nas-ty,

and make his throne as en-during as the skies a-bove.
If his sons re-ject my law and dis-o-bey my regu-la-tions,
if they break my rules
and do not keep my com-mand-ments,

I will punish their re-bel-lion
by beating them with a club,
their sin by in-flicting them with bruis-es.
But I will not re-move my loyal love from him.

I will not be un-faithful to my prom-ise.
I will not break my cove-nant
or go back on what I prom-ised.
Once and/for all I have vowed by my own holi-ness,

I will never de-ceive Da-vid.
His dy-nasty will last for-ev-er.
His throne will en-dure be-fore me, like the sun,
it will re-main sta-ble, like the moon,

his throne will en-dure like the sky.
But you have spurned and re-jected him;
you are an-gry with your cho-sen king.
You have re-pudi-at-ed your cove-nant with your serv-ant;

You have thrown his crown to/the ground.
You have broken down all his walls;
you have made his strong-holds a heap of ru-ins.
All who pass by have robbed him;

he has be-come an object of dis-dain to his neigh-bors.
You have al-lowed his adver-sar-ies to be vic-to-ri-ous,
and all his ene-mies to re-joice.
You turn back his sword from/the adver-sar-y,

and have not sus-tained him in bat-tle.
You have brought to an end his splen-dor,
and have knocked his throne to/the ground.
You have cut short his youth,

You have covered him with shame.
How long, O Lord, will this last?
Will you re-main hidden for-ev-er?
Will your an-ger con-tinue to burn like fire?

Take note of my brief life span!
Why do you make all people so mor-tal?
No man can live on with-out ex-peri--enc-ing death,
or de-liv-er his life from/the power of She-ol.

Where are your earli-er faithful deeds, O Lord,
the ones per-formed in/ac-cord-ance with your re-lia-ble oath to Da-vid?
Take note, O Lord, of/the way your servants are taunt-ed,
and of how I must bear so many in-sults from peo-ple!

Your ene-mies, O Lord, hurl in-sults;
they in-sult your chosen king as they dog his foot-steps.
The Lord de-serves praise for-ever-more!
We a-gree! We a-gree! A-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Acts 20:17-38

From Miletus he sent a message to Ephesus, telling the elders of the church to come to him.

When they arrived, he said to them, “You yourselves know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I set foot in the province of Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears, and with the trials that happened to me because of the plots of the Jews. You know that I did not hold back from proclaiming to you anything that would be helpful, and from teaching you publicly and from house to house, testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus. And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem without knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit warns me in town after town that imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me. But I do not consider my life worth anything to myself, so that I may finish my task and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace.

“And now I know that none of you among whom I went around proclaiming the kingdom will see me again. Therefore I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of you all. For I did not hold back from announcing to you the whole purpose of God. Watch out for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I am gone fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Even from among your own group men will arise, teaching perversions of the truth to draw the disciples away after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you with tears. And now I entrust you to God and to the message of his grace. This message is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I have desired no one’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine provided for my needs and the needs of those who were with me. By all these things, I have shown you that by working in this way we must help the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

When he had said these things, he knelt down with them all and prayed. They all began to weep loudly, and hugged Paul and kissed him, especially saddened by what he had said, that they were not going to see him again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Monday - Song of Praise

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glory to you, Lord God of our fath-ers;
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
Glory to you for/the radi-ance of your holy Name;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glory to you in/the splen-dor of your tem-ple;
on the throne of your maj-es-ty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated be-tween the Cher-u-bim;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glory to you, be-hold-ing the depths;
in the high vault of heav-en, glory to you.
Glory to you, Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
we will praise you and highly ex-alt you for ev-er.

A reading from Mark 9:42-50

“If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, to the unquenchable fire. If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out! It is better to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched. Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Monday - Song of Simeon

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-light-en the na-tions,
and the glory of your people Is-ra-el.
Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever. A-men.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper all who labor to gather them, that we, who are constantly receiving good things from your hand, may always give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Peace

Most holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgements, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
