Evening Prayer - Friday August 27 2021

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Friday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing thy praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

thou art worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 22

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

My God, my God,
why have you a-ban-doned me?
I groan in prayer,
but help seems far a-way.

My God, I cry out during the day,
but you do not an-swer,
and during the night
my prayers do not let up.

You are ho-ly;
you re-ceive the praises of Is-ra-el.
In you our an-ces-tors trust-ed;
they trusted in you and you res-cued them.

To you they cried out, and they were saved;
in you they trusted and they were not disap-point-ed.
But I am a worm, not a man;
peo-ple in-sult me and de-spise me.

All who see me taunt me;
they mock me and shake their heads.
They say, Com-mit your-self to/the Lord!
Let the Lord res-cue him!

Let the Lord de-liver him,
for he de-lights in him.
Yes, you are/the one
who brought me out from/the womb

and made me feel se-cure
set up-on my moth-er's breast.
I have been de-pendent on you since birth;
from the time I came out/of my moth-er's womb

you have been my God.
Do not re-main far a-way from me,
for trou-ble is near
and I have no one to help me.

Man-y bulls sur-round me;
power-ful bulls of Ba-shan hem me in.
They open their mouths to de-vour me
like a roar-ing lion that rips its prey.

My strength drains a-way like wat-er;
all my bones are dis-lo-cat-ed;
my heart is like wax;
it melts a-way in-side me.

The roof of my mouth
is as dry as/a piece of potter-y;
my tongue sticks to my gums.
You set me in/the dust of death.

Yes, wild dogs sur-round me
a gang of evil men crowd a-round me;
like a li-on
they pin my hands and feet.

I can count all my bones;
my ene-mies are gloat-ing over me in triumph.
They are di-viding up my clothes a-mong them;
they are rolling dice for my gar-ments.

But you, O Lord,
do not re-main far a-way!
You are my source of strength!
Hur-ry and help me, O Lord!

De-liver me from/the sword!
Save my life from/the claws of/the wild dogs!
Res-cue me from/the mouth of/the li-on,
and from/the horns of/the wild ox-en!

You have an-swered me!
I will de-clare your name
to all my coun-try-men!
In/the mid-dle of/the as-sem-bly

I will praise you!
You loyal follow-ers of/the Lord, praise him!
All you de-scendants of Ja-cob, hon-or him!
All you de-scendants of Is-ra-el, stand in awe of him!

For he did not de-spise
or de-test the suffer-ing of/the op-pressed;
he did not ig-nore him;
when he cried out to him, he re-spond-ed.

You are the rea-son, O Lord,
I offer praise in/the great as-sem-bly;
I will ful-fill my prom-is-es
be-fore the Lord's loyal follow-ers.

Let the op-pressed eat
and let them be satis-fied!
Let those who seek his help
praise the Lord for-ev-er!

May you live for-ev-er!
Let all the people of/the earth
ac-knowl-edge the Lord and turn to him!
Let all/the na-tions wor-ship you!

For the Lord is king
and rules over the na-tions.
All of/the thriv-ing people of/the earth
will join the cele-bra-tion and wor-ship;

all those who are de-scending into the grave
will bow down be-fore him,
in-cluding those who cannot pre-serve their lives.
A whole gener-a-tion will serve him;

They will tell the next gener-a-tion a-bout the Lord.
They will tell a-bout his sav-ing deeds;
they will tell a future gener-a-tion
what he has ac-com-plished.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Acts 28:1-16

After we had safely reached shore, we learned that the island was called Malta. The local inhabitants showed us extraordinary kindness, for they built a fire and welcomed us all because it had started to rain and was cold. When Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood and was putting it on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand. When the local people saw the creature hanging from Paul’s hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer! Although he has escaped from the sea, Justice herself has not allowed him to live!” However, Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm. But they were expecting that he was going to swell up or suddenly drop dead. So after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

Now in the region around that place were fields belonging to the chief official of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably as guests for three days. The father of Publius lay sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and after praying, placed his hands on him and healed him. After this had happened, many of the people on the island who were sick also came and were healed. They also bestowed many honors, and when we were preparing to sail, they gave us all the supplies we needed.

After three months we put out to sea in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island and had the “Heavenly Twins” as its figurehead. We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. From there we cast off and arrived at Rhegium, and after one day a south wind sprang up and on the second day we came to Puteoli. There we found some brothers and were invited to stay with them seven days. And in this way we came to Rome. The brothers from there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. When he saw them, Paul thanked God and took courage. When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Third Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

A-rise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of/the Lord has dawned up-on you.
For be-hold, dark-ness covers the land;
deep gloom en-shrouds the peo-ples.

But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will ap-pear up-on you.
Na-tions will stream to your light,
and kings to/the bright-ness of your dawn-ing.

Your gates will al-ways be o-pen;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of/the Lord,
The Zi-on of/the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

Vio-lence will/no more be heard in your land,
ru-in or de-struc-tion with-in your bor-ders.
You will call your walls, Sal-va-tion,
and all your por-tals, Praise.

The sun will/no more be your light by day;
by night you will/not need the brightness of/the moon.
The Lord will be your ever-last-ing light,
and your God will be your glo-ry.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever. A-men.

A reading from Mark 14:27-42

Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written,

“‘I will strike the shepherd,

and the sheep will be scattered.’

But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” Peter said to him, “Even if they all fall away, I will not!” Jesus said to him, “I tell you the truth, today—this very night—before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all of them said the same thing.

Then they went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed. He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.” Going a little farther, he threw himself to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him. He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour? Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” He went away again and prayed the same thing. When he came again he found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to tell him. He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough of that! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer is approaching!”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - You are God

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

You are God: we praise you;
You are the Lord; we ac-claim you;
You are the e-ter-nal Fath-er:
All cre-a-tion wor-ships you.

To you all an-gels, all the powers of heav-en,
Cher-u-bim and Ser-a-phim, sing in end-less praise:
Holy, ho-ly, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heav-en and earth are full of your glo-ry.

The glori-ous compan-y of a-postles praises you.
The no-ble fellow-ship of proph-ets praises you.
The white-robed army of mar-tyrs praises you.
Through-out the world the holy Church ac-claims you;

Fath-er, of majes-ty un-bound-ed,
your true and only Son, worthy of all wor-ship,
and the Ho-ly Spi-rit, advo-cate and guide.
Three in one, we praise you for ev-er.

You, Christ, are the king of glo-ry,
the e-ter-nal Son of/the Fath-er.
When you be-came man to set us free
you did not shun the Vir-gin's womb.

You over-came the sting of death
and o-pened the kingdom of heaven to all be-liev-ers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glo-ry.
We be-lieve that you will come and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your peo-ple,
bought with/the price of your own blood,
and bring us with your saints
to glo-ry ever-last-ing.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
