The one true God gives me strength;

my arms can bend even the strong-est bow.
You give me your pro-tec-tive shield;

I chase my ene-mies and catch them;
I do not turn back un-til I wipe them out.
I beat them to death;
they all fall at my feet.

You give me strength for bat-tle;

You make my ene-mies re-treat;
I de-stroy those who hate me.

They cry out, but there is no one to help them;
they _ cry out to/the Lord,
but he does not an-swer them.

I beat them under-foot;

You res-cue me from a hos-tile ar-my;
you make me a leader of na-tions;

Peo-ple over whom I had no au-thor-i-ty
are now my loyal sub-jects.
When they hear of my ex-ploits,
they sub-mit them-selves to me.

Foreign-ers are power-less be-fore me;
foreign-ers lose their cour-age;
they shake with fear as they leave their strong-holds.
The Lord is/a-live! My pro-tec-tor is praise-wor-thy!

The God who de-livers me is ex-alted as king!
The one true God com-plete-ly vindi-cates me;
he makes na-tions sub-mit to me.
He de-livers me from my ene-mies;

you snatch me a-way from those who at-tack me;
you res-cue me from vio-lent men.
So I will give you thanks
be-fore the na-tions, O Lord!

I will sing praises to you!
He gives his king mag-nifi-cent vic-to-ry;
he is faithful to his chosen rul-er,
to Da-vid and his de-scend-ants for-ev-er.

Readings

A reading from Acts 27:27-44

When the fourteenth night had come, while we were being driven across the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors suspected they were approaching some land. They took soundings and found the water was twenty fathoms deep; when they had sailed a little farther they took soundings again and found it was fifteen fathoms deep. Because they were afraid that we would run aground on the rocky coast, they threw out four anchors from the stern and wished for day to appear. Then when the sailors tried to escape from the ship and were lowering the ship’s boat into the sea, pretending that they were going to put out anchors from the bow, Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.” Then the soldiers cut the ropes of the ship’s boat and let it drift away.

As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day you have been in suspense and have gone without food; you have eaten nothing. Therefore I urge you to take some food, for this is important for your survival. For not one of you will lose a hair from his head.” After he said this, Paul took bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat. So all of them were encouraged and took food themselves. (We were in all 276 persons on the ship.) When they had eaten enough to be satisfied, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.

When day came, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. So they slipped the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the linkage that bound the steering oars together. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and steered toward the beach. But they encountered a patch of crosscurrents and ran the ship aground; the bow stuck fast and could not be moved, but the stern was being broken up by the force of the waves. Now the soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners so that none of them would escape by swimming away. But the centurion, wanting to save Paul’s life, prevented them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land, and the rest were to follow, some on planks and some on pieces of the ship. And in this way all were brought safely to land.

A reading from Mark 14:12-26

Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He sent two of his disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” So the disciples left, went into the city, and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Then, when it was evening, he came to the house with the Twelve. While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me will betray me.” They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?” He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve, one who dips his hand with me into the bowl. For the Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

While they were eating, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it. This is my body.” And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, “This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, that is poured out for many. I tell you the truth, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
