Friday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Friday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 35

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O Lord, fight those who fight with me!
At-tack those who at-tack me!
Grab your small shield and large shield,
and rise up to help me!

Use your spear and lance
a-gainst those who chase me!
As-sure me with these words:
I am your de-liver-er!

May those who seek my life
be em-bar-rassed and hu-mili-at-ed!
May those who plan to harm me
be turned back and a-shamed!

May they be like wind driven chaff,
as the Lord's an-gel at-tacks them!
May their path be dark and slip-per-y,
as the Lord's an-gel chases them!

I did not harm them,
but they hid a net to catch me
and dug a pit to trap me.
Let de-struc-tion take them by sur-prise!

Let the net they hid catch them!
Let them fall into de-struc-tion!
Then I will re-joice in/the Lord
and be happy be-cause of his de-liver-ance.

With all my strength I will say,
O Lord, who can com-pare to you?
You res-cue the op-pressed
from those who try to over-pow-er them;

the op-pressed and need-y
from those who try to rob them.
Vio-lent men per-jure them-selves,
and false-ly ac-cuse me.

They re-pay me evil for/the good I have done;
I am over-whelmed with sor-row.
When they were sick, I wore sack-cloth,
and re-frained from eat-ing food.

If I am ly-ing,
may my prayers go un-an-swered!
I mourned for them
as I would for/a friend or my broth-er.

I bowed down in sor-row
as if I were mourning for my moth-er.
But when I stum-bled,
they re-joiced and gathered to-geth-er;

they gathered to-gether to am-bush me.
They tore at me without stop-ping to rest.
When I stum-bled,
they taunt-ed me re-lent-less-ly,

and tried to bite me.
O Lord, how long are you going to watch this?
Res-cue me from their de-struc-tive at-tacks;
guard my life from/the young li-ons!

Then I will give you thanks in/the great as-sem-bly;
I will praise you be-fore a large crowd of peo-ple!
Don't let my ene-mies gloat over me!
Don't let those who hate me carry out their schemes!

For they don't try to make peace with oth-ers,
but plan ways to de-ceive
those who live peace-fully in/the land.
They are ready to de-vour me;

they say, Aha! A-ha! We've got you!
But you take no-tice, Lord; don't be si-lent!
O Lord, don't re-main far a-way from me!
Rouse your-self, wake up and vindi-cate me!

My God and Lord, de-fend my just cause!
Vindi-cate me by your jus-tice, O Lord my God!
Don't let them gloat over me!
Don't let them say to them-selves, A-ha!

We have what we want-ed!
Don't let them say, We have de-voured him!
May those who re-joice in my trou-bles
be total-ly em-bar-rassed and a-shamed!

May those who arro-gant-ly taunt me be covered with shame
May those who de-sire my vindi-ca-tion
shout for joy and re-joice!
May they con-tin-ual-ly say, May the Lord be praised,

for he wants his servant to be se-cure.
Then I will tell others a-bout your jus-tice,
and praise you all day long.
May the Lord be praised for-ev-er!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from James 4:13-5:6

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. You ought to say instead, “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.” But as it is, you boast about your arrogant plans. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows what is good to do and does not do it is guilty of sin.

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming on you. Your riches have rotted and your clothing has become moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted and their rust will be a witness against you. It will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have hoarded treasure! Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. You have lived indulgently and luxuriously on the earth. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person, although he does not resist you.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - You are God

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

You are God: we praise you;
You are the Lord; we ac-claim you;
You are the e-ter-nal Fath-er:
All cre-a-tion wor-ships you.

To you all an-gels, all the powers of heav-en,
Cher-u-bim and Ser-a-phim, sing in end-less praise:
Holy, ho-ly, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heav-en and earth are full of your glo-ry.

The glori-ous compan-y of a-postles praises you.
The no-ble fellow-ship of proph-ets praises you.
The white-robed army of mar-tyrs praises you.
Through-out the world the holy Church ac-claims you;

Fath-er, of majes-ty un-bound-ed,
your true and only Son, worthy of all wor-ship,
and the Ho-ly Spi-rit, advo-cate and guide.
Three in one, we praise you for ev-er.

You, Christ, are the king of glo-ry,
the e-ter-nal Son of/the Fath-er.
When you be-came man to set us free
you did not shun the Vir-gin's womb.

You over-came the sting of death
and o-pened the kingdom of heaven to all be-liev-ers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glo-ry.
We be-lieve that you will come and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your peo-ple,
bought with/the price of your own blood,
and bring us with your saints
to glo-ry ever-last-ing.

A reading from Mark 15:22-32

They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which is translated, “Place of the Skull”). They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take. It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, “The king of the Jews.” And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself and come down from the cross!” In the same way even the chief priests—together with the experts in the law—were mocking him among themselves: “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - First Song of Isaiah

Tenor      Soprano      Response      Cantor      Bass      Alto      PDF      All

Sure-ly, it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be a- fraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure de- fense,
and he will be my Sav- ior.

There-fore you shall draw water with re- joic- ing
from the springs of sal- va- tion.
And on that day you shall say,
Give thanks to/the Lord and call up- on his Name;

Make his deeds known a-mong the peo- ples;
see that they re-member that his Name is ex- alt- ed.
Sing the praises of/the Lord,
for he has done great things,

And this is known in all the world.
Cry a-loud, in-habit-ants of Zi- on, ring out your joy,
for the great one in/the midst of you
is the Ho-ly One of Is- ra- el.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son
and to/the Ho- ly Spi- rit:
as it was in/the be- ginning, is now,
and will be for- ever A- men.

Prayers

Friday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

Friday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

De-liver us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,
now and for-ever A-men.

That this eve-ning may be ho-ly, good, and peace-ful,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That your holy an-gels may lead us in paths of peace and good-will,

We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may de-part this life in your faith and fear,
and be freed from con-dem-na-tion
be-fore the great judg-ment seat of Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be bound to-gether by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Barna-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-other and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
