How blessed is the one who treats the poor proper-ly!
When trouble comes, may the Lord de-liv-er him.
May the Lord pro-tect him and save his life!

you have healed him from his ill-ness.
As for me, I said: O Lord, have mer-cy on me!

Heal me, for I have sinned a-gainst you!
My ene-mies ask this cruel question a-bout me,
When will he final-ly die and be for-got-ten?
When someone comes to visit, he pre-tends to be friend-ly;

He thinks of ways to de-fame me,
and when he leaves he slanders me.
All who hate me whisper insults a-bout me to one an-oth-er;
they plan ways to harm me.

They say, An awful dis-ease over-whelms him,
and now that he is bed-ridden he will never re-cov-er.
Even my close friend whom I trust-ed,
he who shared meals with me, has turned a-gainst me.

As for you, O Lord, have mercy on me
and raise me up, so I can pay them back!
By this I know that you are pleased with me,
for my ene-my does not triumph over me.

As for me, you up-hold me be-cause of my in-tegri-ty;
you al-low me perma-nent access to your pres-ence.
The Lord God of Is-ra-el de-serves praise

Why do you boast a-bout your evil plan, O power-ful man?
God's loyal love pro-tects me all day long!
Your tongue carries out your de-struc-tive plan;
it is as ef-fec-tive as/a sharp razor, O de-ceiv-er.

You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth.
You love to use all the words that de-stroy,
and the tongue that de-ceives.

Yet God will make you a perma-nent heap of ruins.
He will scoop you up and re-move you from your home;
he will up-root you from/the land of/the liv-ing.
When the god-ly see this, they will be filled with awe,

And will mock the evil-do-er, say-ing:
Look, here is the man who would not make God his pro-tec-tor!
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confi-dent a-bout his plans to de-stroy oth-ers.

But I am like a flourish-ing olive tree in/the house of God;
I con-tin-ual-ly trust in God's loyal love.
I will con-tin-ual-ly thank you when you exe-cute judg-ment;
I will re-ly on you, for your loyal follow-ers know you are good.

Readings

A reading from 1 Samuel 24:1-22

(24:2) When Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “Look, David is in the desert of En Gedi.” So Saul took 3,000 select men from all Israel and went to find David and his men in the region of the rocks of the mountain goats. He came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave. Saul went into it to relieve himself.

Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave. David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hand, and you can do to him whatever seems appropriate to you.’” So David got up and quietly cut off an edge of Saul’s robe. Afterward David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off an edge of Saul’s robe. He said to his men, “May the Lord keep me far away from doing such a thing to my lord, who is the Lord’s chosen one, by extending my hand against him. After all, he is the Lord’s chosen one.” David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and started down the road.

Afterward David got up and went out of the cave. He called out to Saul, “My lord, O king!” When Saul looked behind him, David kneeled down and bowed with his face to the ground. David said to Saul, “Why do you pay attention when men say, ‘David is seeking to do you harm’? Today your own eyes see how the Lord delivered you—this very day—into my hands in the cave. Some told me to kill you, but I had pity on you and said, ‘I will not extend my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s chosen one.’ Look, my father, and see the edge of your robe in my hand! When I cut off the edge of your robe, I didn’t kill you. So realize and understand that I am not planning evil or rebellion. Even though I have not sinned against you, you are waiting in ambush to take my life. May the Lord judge between the two of us, and may the Lord vindicate me over you, but my hand will not be against you. It’s like the old proverb says: ‘From evil people evil proceeds.’ But my hand will not be against you. Who has the king of Israel come out after? Who is it that you are pursuing? A dead dog? A single flea? May the Lord be our judge and arbiter. May he see and arbitrate my case and deliver me from your hands.”

When David finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “Is that your voice, my son David?” Then Saul wept loudly. He said to David, “You are more innocent than I, for you have treated me well, even though I have tried to harm you. You have explained today how you have treated me well. The Lord delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me. Now if a man finds his enemy, does he send him on his way in good shape? May the Lord repay you with good this day for what you have done to me. Now look, I realize that you will in fact be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. So now swear to me in the Lord’s name that you will not kill my descendants after me or destroy my name from the house of my father.”

David promised Saul this on oath. Then Saul went to his house, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.

We praise you for your glo-ry.

You take/a-way the sin of/the world:
have mer-cy up-on us;

re-ceive _ our pray-er.

A reading from Mark 4:1-20

Again he began to teach by the lake. Such a large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the lake and sat there while the whole crowd was on the shore by the lake. He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching said to them: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground where it did not have much soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep. When the sun came up it was scorched, and because it did not have sufficient root, it withered. Other seed fell among the thorns, and they grew up and choked it, and it did not produce grain. But other seed fell on good soil and produced grain, sprouting and growing; some yielded thirty times as much, some sixty, and some a hundred times.” And he said, “Whoever has ears to hear had better listen!”

When he was alone, those around him with the Twelve asked him about the parables. He said to them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those outside, everything is in parables,

“so that although they look they may look but not see,

and although they hear they may hear but not understand,

so they may not repent and be forgiven.”

He said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any parable? The sower sows the word. These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: Whenever they hear, immediately Satan comes and snatches the word that was sown in them. These are the ones sown on rocky ground: As soon as they hear the word, they receive it with joy. But they have no root in themselves and do not endure. Then, when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, immediately they fall away. Others are the ones sown among thorns: They are those who hear the word, but worldly cares, the seductiveness of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it produces nothing. But these are the ones sown on good soil: They hear the word and receive it and bear fruit, one thirty times as much, one sixty, and one a hundred.”

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
