Why, O God, have you perma-nent-ly re-ject-ed us?
Why does your an-ger burn a-gainst the sheep of your pas-ture?
Re-member your peo-ple
whom you ac-quired in an-cient times,

whom you res-cued
so they could be your very own na-tion,
as well as Mount Zi-on,
where you dwell for-ev-er!

Hur-ry to/the per-ma-nent ruin,
and to all the dam-age the ene-my has done to/the tem-ple!
Your ene-mies roar in/the mid-dle of your sanc-tu-ar-y;
they set up their bat-tle flags.

They in-vade like lum-ber-jacks
swing-ing their ax-es in a thick for-est.
And now they are tear-ing down all its en-grav-ings
with ax-es and crow-bars.

They set your sanc-tu-ar-y on fire;
they des-e-crate your dwell-ing place
by knock-ing it to/the ground.
They say to them-selves, We will op-press all of them.

They burn down all the places
where people wor-ship God in/the land.
We do not see any signs of God's pres-ence;
there are no long-er any proph-ets

And we have no one
to tell us how long this will last.
How long, O God, will the ad-ver-sar-y hurl in-sult?
Will the ene-my blas-pheme your name for-ev-er?

Why do you re-main in-ac-tive?
In-ter-vene and de-stroy him!
But God has been my king from an-cient times,
per-form-ing acts of de-liver-ance on/the earth.

You de-stroyed the sea by your strength;
you shat-tered the heads of/the sea mon-ster in/the wat-er.
You crushed the heads of Le-vi-a-than;
you fed him to/the people who live a-long the coast.

You broke o-pen the spring and the stream;
you dried up per-pet-ual-ly flow-ing riv-ers.
You es-tab-lished the cy-cle of day and night;
you put the moon and sun in place.

You set up all the bound-a-rys of/the earth;
you cre-at-ed the cy-cle of sum-mer and win-ter.
Re-member how the ene-my hurls in-sult, O Lord,
and how a fool-ish na-tion blas-phemes your name!

Do not hand the life of your dove
o-ver to a wild an-i-mal!
Do not con-tin-ue to dis-re-gard the lives
of your op-pressed peo-ple!

Re-member your cov-e-nant prom-ise,
for the dark re-gions of/the earth
are full of places where vio-lence rules.
Do not let the af-flict-ed be turned back in shame!

Let the op-pressed and poor praise your name!
Rise up, O God! De-fend your hon-or!
Re-member how fools in-sult you all day long!
Do not dis-re-gard what your ene-mies say,

Nor the un-ceas-ing shouts
of those who de-fy you.

Readings

A reading from Acts 16:25-40

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the rest of the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly a great earthquake occurred, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. Immediately all the doors flew open, and the bonds of all the prisoners came loose. When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison standing open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, because he assumed the prisoners had escaped. But Paul called out loudly, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!” Calling for lights, the jailer rushed in and fell down trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him, along with all those who were in his house. At that hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and all his family were baptized right away. The jailer brought them into his house and set food before them, and he rejoiced greatly that he had come to believe in God, together with his entire household. At daybreak the magistrates sent their police officers, saying, “Release those men.” The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent orders to release you. So come out now and go in peace.” But Paul said to the police officers, “They had us beaten in public without a proper trial – even though we are Roman citizens – and they threw us in prison. And now they want to send us away secretly? Absolutely not! They themselves must come and escort us out!” The police officers reported these words to the magistrates. They were frightened when they heard Paul and Silas were Roman citizens and came and apologized to them. After they brought them out, they asked them repeatedly to leave the city. When they came out of the prison, they entered Lydia’s house, and when they saw the brothers, they encouraged them and then departed.

A reading from Mark 7:1-23

Now the Pharisees and some of the experts in the law who came from Jerusalem gathered around him. And they saw that some of Jesus’ disciples ate their bread with unclean hands, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, holding fast to the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. They hold fast to many other traditions: the washing of cups, pots, kettles, and dining couches.) The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?” He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written:

“‘This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

They worship me in vain,

teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.’

Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition.” He also said to them, “You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you would have received from me is corban’ (that is, a gift for God), then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this.”

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand. There is nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him.”

Now when Jesus had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. He said to them, “Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him? For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer.” (This means all foods are clean.) He said, “What comes out of a person defiles him. For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. All these evils come from within and defile a person.”

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.
