Lord. O Lord, hear my prayer!
Pay at-ten-tion to my cry for help!

For my days go up in smoke,
and my bones are charred like a fire-place.
My heart is parched and withered like grass,
for I am un-able to eat food.

Be-cause of/the anx-ie-ty that makes me groan,
my bones pro-trude from my skin.
I am like an owl in/the wilder-ness;
I am like a screech owl a-mong the ruins.

I stay a-wake; I am like a soli-tar-y bird on/a roof.
All day long my ene-mies taunt me;
those who mock me use my name in their curs-es.
For I eat ashes as if they were bread.

I mix my drink with my tears,
be-cause of your an-ger and raging fu-ry.
In-deed, you pick me up and throw me a-way.
My days are coming to an end.

I am withered like grass.
But you, O Lord, rule for-ev-er,
and your repu-ta-tion en-dures.
You will rise up and have com-passion on Zi-on.

For it is time to have mer-cy on her,
for the ap-pointed time has come.
In-deed, your servants take de-light in her stones,
and feel com-passion for/the dust of her ruins.

The na-tions will re-spect the repu-ta-tion of/the Lord,
and all/the kings of/the earth will re-spect his splen-dor,
when the Lord re-builds Zi-on, and re-veals his splen-dor,
when he re-sponds to/the prayer of/the des-ti-tute.

He does not re-ject their re-quest.
The ac-count of his inter-ven-tion will be re-corded for future gener-a-tions;
peo-ple yet to/be born will praise the Lord.
For he will look down from his sanc-tu-ar-y a-bove;

From heaven the Lord will look toward earth,
in order to hear the painful cries of/the prison-er,
and to set free those con-demned to die,
so they may pro-claim the name of/the Lord in Zi-on,

And praise him in Je-ru-sa-lem,
when the na-tions gath-er to-geth-er,
and the king-doms pay trib-ute to/the Lord.
He has taken a-way my strength in/the middle of life;

He has cut short my days. I say,
O my God, please do/not take me a-way in/the middle of my life!
You en-dure through all gener-a-tions.
In ear-lier times you es-tab-lished the earth;

The skies are your handi-work.
They will perish, but you will en-dure.
They will wear out like a gar-ment;
like clothes you will re-move them and they will disap-pear.

But you re-main;
your years do not come to/an end.
The children of your ser-vants will settle down here,
and their de-scen-dants will live se-cure-ly in your pres-ence.

A reading from 1 Maccabees 4:36-59

Then Judas and his brothers said, See, our enemies are crushed;let us go up to cleanse the sanctuary and dedicate it.So all the army assembled and went up to Mount Zion.There they saw the sanctuary desolate, the altar profaned, and the gates burned.In the courts they saw bushes sprung up as in a thicket, or as on one of the mountains.They saw also the chambers of the priests in ruins.Then they tore their clothes and mourned with great lamentation;they sprinkled themselves with ashes and fell face down on the ground.And when the signal was given with the trumpets, they cried out to Heaven.

Then Judas detailed men to fight against those in the citadel until he had cleansed the sanctuary.He chose blameless priests devoted to the law, and they cleansed the sanctuary and removed the defiled stones to an unclean place.They deliberated what to do about the altar of burnt offering, which had been profaned.And they thought it best to tear it down, so that it would not be a lasting shame to them that the Gentiles had defiled it.So they tore down the altar, and stored the stones in a convenient place on the temple hill until a prophet should come to tell what to do with them.Then they took unhewn stones, as the law directs, and built a new altar like the former one.They also rebuilt the sanctuary and the interior of the temple, and consecrated the courts.They made new holy vessels, and brought the lampstand, the altar of incense, and the table into the temple.Then they offered incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lampstand, and these gave light in the temple.They placed the bread on the table and hung up the curtains.Thus they finished all the work they had undertaken.

Early in the morning on the twentyfifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred fortyeighth year, they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of burnt offering that they had built.At the very season and on the very day that the Gentiles had profaned it, it was dedicated with songs and harps and lutes and cymbals.All the people fell on their faces and worshiped and blessed Heaven, who had prospered them.So they celebrated the dedication of the altar for eight days, and joyfully offered burnt offerings;they offered a sacrifice of wellbeing and a thanksgiving offering.They decorated the front of the temple with golden crowns and small shields;they restored the gates and the chambers for the priests, and fitted them with doors.There was very great joy among the people, and the disgrace brought by the Gentiles was removed.

Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel determined that every year at that season the days of dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness for eight days, beginning with the twentyfifth day of the month of Chislev.

and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heaven-ly King,

We worship you, we give you thanks,

You take/a-way the sin of/the world:

A reading from Matthew 18:10-20

“See that you do not disdain one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. What do you think? If someone owns a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go look for the one that went astray? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that one of these little ones be lost.

“If your brother sins, go and show him his fault when the two of you are alone. If he listens to you, you have regained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others with you, so that at the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter may be established. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. If he refuses to listen to the church, treat him like a Gentile or a tax collector.

“I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven. Again, I tell you the truth, if two of you on earth agree about whatever you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them. ”

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.
