Tuesday - Evensong Invitation

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Tuesday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 78:40-72

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

How often they re-belled a-gainst him in/the wilder-ness,
and in-sulted him in/the waste-land!
They a-gain chal-lenged God,
and of-fended the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

They did not re-member what he had done,
how he de-livered them from/the ene-my,
when he per-formed his awe-some deeds in E-gypt,
and his acts of judg-ment in/the re-gion of Zoan.

He turned their riv-ers into blood,
and they could not drink from their streams.
He sent swarms of biting in-sects a-gainst them,
as well as frogs that over-ran their land.

He gave their crops to/the grass-hop-pers,
the fruit of their labor to/the lo-custs.
He de-stroyed their vines with hail,
and their syca-more fig trees with driv-ing rain.

He rained hail down on their cat-tle,
and hurled lightning bolts down on their live-stock.
His raging an-ger lashed out a-gainst them,
He sent fury, rage, and trou-ble

as messen-gers who bring dis-as-ter.
He sent his an-ger in full force;
he did not spare them from death;
he handed their lives over to de-struc-tion.

He struck down all/the first-born in E-gypt,
the first fruits of their repro-duc-tive power in/the tents of Ham.
Yet he brought out his people like sheep;
he led them through the wilder-ness like a flock.

He guided them safe-ly a-long,
and they were not a-fraid;
but the sea cov-ered their ene-mies.
He brought them to/the bor-der of his holy land,

to this mountain-ous land
which his right hand ac-quired.
He drove the na-tions out from be-fore them;
he as-signed them their trib-al al-lot-ments

and al-lowed the tribes of Is-ra-el to settle down.
Yet they chal-lenged and de-fied God Most High,
and did not o-bey his com-mands.
They were un-faithful to God

and acted as treacher-ous-ly as their an-ces-tors;
they were as un-re-lia-ble as/a bro-ken bow.
They made him an-gry with/their pa-gan shrines,
and made him jeal-ous with/their i-dols.

God heard and was an-gry;
he com-plet-ly re-jected Is-ra-el.
He a-bandoned the sanc-tu-ary at Shi-loh,
the tent where he lived a-mong men.

He al-lowed the symbol of his pres-ence to/be cap-tured;
he gave the symbol of his splen-dor to/the ene-my.
He de-livered his people over to/the sword,
and was an-gry with his chosen na-tion.

Fire con-sumed their young men,
and their virgins re-mained un-mar-ried.
Their priests fell by/the sword,
but their widows did not weep.

But then the Lord a-woke from his sleep;
he was like a warri-or in a drunken rage.
He drove his ene-mies back;
he made them a perma-nent tar-get for in-sults.

He re-jected the tent of Jo-seph;
he did/not choose the tribe of Eph-ra-im.
He chose the tribe of Ju-dah,
and Mount Zi-on, which he loves.

He made his sanc-tu-ary
as en-during as the heavens a-bove;
as se-cure as the earth,
which he es-tab-lished perma-nent-ly.

He chose Da-vid, his serv-ant,
and took him from/the sheep fold.
He took him a-way from follow-ing the sheep,
and made him the shep-herd

of Ja-cob, his peo-ple,
and of Is-ra-el, his chosen na-tion.
Da-vid cared for them
with pure mo-tives; he led them with skill.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Revelation 18:9-20

Then the kings of the earth who committed immoral acts with her and lived in sensual luxury with her will weep and wail for her when they see the smoke from the fire that burns her up. They will stand a long way off because they are afraid of her torment, and will say,
“Woe, woe, O great city,
Babylon the powerful city!
For in a single hour your doom has come!”

Then the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn for her because no one buys their cargo any longer— cargo such as gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all sorts of things made of citron wood, all sorts of objects made of ivory, all sorts of things made of expensive wood, bronze, iron and marble, cinnamon, spice, incense, perfumed ointment, frankincense, wine, olive oil and costly flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and four-wheeled carriages, slaves and human lives.

(The ripe fruit you greatly desired
has gone from you,
and all your luxury and splendor
have gone from you—
they will never ever be found again!)

The merchants who sold these things, who got rich from her, will stand a long way off because they are afraid of her torment. They will weep and mourn, saying,
“Woe, woe, O great city—
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet clothing,
and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls—

because in a single hour such great wealth has been destroyed!”

And every ship’s captain, and all who sail along the coast—seamen, and all who make their living from the sea, stood a long way off and began to shout when they saw the smoke from the fire that burned her up, “Who is like the great city?” And they threw dust on their heads and were shouting with weeping and mourning,
“Woe, Woe, O great city—
in which all those who had ships on the sea got rich from her wealth—
because in a single hour she has been destroyed!”

(Rejoice over her, O heaven,
and you saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has pronounced judgment against her on your behalf!)

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Sun and moon and stars of/the sky, glori-fy the Lord,

Glori-fy the Lord, O chill and cold,
drops of dew and flakes of snow.
Frost and cold, ice and sleet, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O nights and days,
O shin-ing light and en-fold-ing dark.
Storm clouds and thunder-bolts, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let the earth glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
Glori-fy the Lord, O mountains and hills, and all/that grows up-on the earth,
praise him for ev-er. Glori-fy the Lord,

O springs of water, sea, and streams,
O whales and all that move in/the wat-ers.
All birds of/the air, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O beasts of/the wild,
and all you flocks and herds.
O men and women every-where, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let the people of God glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
Glori-fy the Lord, O priests and servants of/the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O spirits and souls of/the right-eous
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
You that are holy and hum-ble of heart, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let us glori-fy the Lord: Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
In/the firma-ment of his power, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

A reading from Matthew 15:21-28

After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!” But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, “Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us. ” So he answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. ” But she came and bowed down before him and said, “Lord, help me!” “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,” he said. “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table. ” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you. ” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Song of Mary

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

My soul pro-claims the greatness of/the Lord,
my spirit re-joices in God my Sav-ior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly serv-ant.
From this day all gener-a-tions will call me blessed:

the Al-might-y has done great things for me,
and _ holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in eve-ry gener-a-tion.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their con-ceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the low-ly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent/a-way emp-ty.
He has come to/the help of his servant Is-ra-el,
for he has re-membered his prom-ise of mer-cy,

The prom-ise he made to our fath-ers,
to Abra-ham and his children for-ev-er.
My soul pro-claims the greatness of/the Lord,
my spirit re-joices in God my Sav-ior;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,

Tuesday - Evening Suffrages A

Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your minis-ters with righteous-ness;
Let your people sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion under your care;
And guide us in/the way of justice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health among all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of/the poor be taken a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, O God;
And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Aid against Perils

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
