Tuesday - Evensong Invitation

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Tuesday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 68

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

God springs into ac-tion!
His _ ene-mies scat-ter;
his adver-saries run from him.
As smoke is driven a-way by/the wind,

So you drive them a-way.
As wax melts be-fore fire,
so the wicked are de-stroyed be-fore God.
But the god-ly are hap-py;

They re-joice be-fore God
and are over-come with joy.
Sing to God! Sing praises to his name!
Ex-alt the one who rides on/the clouds!

For the Lord is his name!
Re-joice be-fore the Lord!
He is a fath-er to/the fath-er-less
and an advo-cate for wid-ows.

God rules from his holy dwell-ing place.
God set-tles those who have been de-serted in their own home;
he frees prison-ers and grants them pros-peri-ty.
But sinful rebels live in/the de-sert.

O God, when you lead your people into bat-tle,
when you march through the waste-land,
the earth shakes, yes,
the heavens pour down rain be-fore God,

The God of Si-nai,
be-fore God, the God of Is-ra-el.
O God, you cause a-bundant show-ers
to fall on your chosen peo-ple.

When they are tired, you sus-tain them,
for you live a-mong them.
You sus-tain the op-pressed
with your good blessing, O God.

The Lord speaks; many, many women spread the good news.
Kings leading ar-mies run a-way!
They run a-way!
The lady of/the house di-vides the spoils.

When you lie down a-mong the sheep-fold,
the wings of/the dove are covered with sil-ver
and with glitter-ing gold.
When the Sove-reign One scatters kings,

Let it snow on Zal-mon!
The mountain of Ba-shan is a tow-er-ing moun-tain;
the mountain of Ba-shan is a mountain with many peaks.
Why do you look with en-vy, O mountains with many peaks,

At/the mountain where God has de-cided to live?
In-deed the Lord will live there perma-nent-ly!
God has count-less char-i-ots;
they _ number in/the thou-sands.

The Lord comes from Si-nai in holy splen-dor.
You as-cend on high, you have taken many cap-tives.
You re-ceive trib-ute from men,
in-cluding even sinful re-bels.

In-deed the Lord God lives there!
The Lord de-serves our praise!
Day after day he carries our bur-dens,
the God who de-livers us.

Our God is a God who de-liv-ers;
the Lord, the sovereign Lord, can res-cue from death.
In-deed God strikes the heads of his ene-mies,
the hairy fore-heads of those who per-sist in re-bel-lion.

The Lord says, I will re-trieve them from Ba-shan,
I will bring them back from/the depths of/the sea,
so that your feet may stomp in their blood,
and your dogs may eat their portion of/the ene-mies'' corps-es.

They see your pro-ces-sions, O God
the pro-ces-sions of my God, my king,
who marches a-long in holy splen-dor.
Sing-ers walk in front; mu-sicians fol-low

Play-ing their stringed in-stru-ments,
in the midst of young women playing tam-bou-rines.
In your large as-sem-blies praise God,
Praise the Lord, in/the as-sem-blies of Is-ra-el!

There is little Benja-min, their rul-er,
and the princes of Ju-dah in their robes,
a-long with/the princes of Zeb-ul-un
and the princes of Naph-ta-li.

God has de-creed that you will be power-ful.
O God, you who have acted on our be-half,
demon-strate your power.
Be-cause of your tem-ple in Je-ru-sa-lem,

Kings bring trib-ute to you.
Sound your bat-tle cry a-gainst the wild beast of/the reed,
and the na-tions that as-sem-ble
like a herd of calves led by bulls!

They hum-ble them-selves
and offer gold and silver as trib-ute.
God scatters the na-tions
that like to do bat-tle.

They come with red cloth from E-gypt,
Ethi-o-pi-a volun-tar-ily offers trib-ute to God.
O kingdoms of/the earth, sing to God!
Sing _ _ praises to/the Lord,

To the one who rides through the sky from an-cient times!
Look! He thun-ders loud-ly.
Ac-knowl-edge God's power,
his sovereign-ty over Is-ra-el,

And the power he re-veals in/the sky!
You are awe-in-spir-ing, O God,
as you e-merge from your holy tem-ple!
It is the God of Is-ra-el who gives the people power and strength.

God de-serves praise!
Look! He thun-ders loud-ly.
Ac-knowl-edge God's power,
his sovereign-ty over Is-ra-el,

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Revelation 11:1-19

Then a measuring rod like a staff was given to me, and I was told, “Get up and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and the ones who worship there. But do not measure the outer courtyard of the temple; leave it out because it has been given to the Gentiles, and they will trample on the holy city for forty-two months. And I will grant my two witnesses authority to prophesy for 1,260 days, dressed in sackcloth.” (These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.) If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and completely consumes their enemies. If anyone wants to harm them, they must be killed this way. These two have the power to close up the sky so that it does not rain during the time they are prophesying. They have power to turn the waters to blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague whenever they want. When they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them and conquer them and kill them. Their corpses will lie in the street of the great city that is symbolically called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified. For three and a half days those from every people, tribe, nation, and language will look at their corpses because they will not permit them to be placed in a tomb. And those who live on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate, even sending gifts to each other because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. But after three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and tremendous fear seized those who were watching them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them: “Come up here!” So the two prophets went up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies stared at them. Just then a major earthquake took place and a tenth of the city collapsed; seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

The second woe has come and gone; the third is coming quickly.

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying:
“The kingdom of the world
has become the kingdom of our Lord
and of his Christ,
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

Then the twenty-four elders who are seated on their thrones before God threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and worshiped God with these words:
“We give you thanks, Lord God, the All-Powerful,
the one who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and begun to reign.

The nations were enraged,
but your wrath has come,
and the time has come for the dead to be judged,
and the time has come to give to your servants,
the prophets, their reward,
as well as to the saints
and to those who revere your name, both small and great,
and the time has come to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

Then the temple of God in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was visible within his temple. And there were flashes of lightning, roaring, crashes of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Second Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Seek the Lord while he wills to/be found;
call up-on him when he draws near.
Let the wicked for-sake their ways
and the evil ones their thoughts;

And let them turn to/the Lord,
and he will have com-passion,
Let then re-turn to our God,
for he will rich-ly par-don.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,

and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from/the heav-ens
and re-turns not a-gain,
but wat-ers the whole earth,

Bring-ing forth life
and giving a-bun-dant growth
And seed for re-plan-ting
and bread and fruit for eat-ing,

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it will not re-turn to me emp-ty;
But it will ac-com-plish that which I have pur-posed,
and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A reading from Matthew 13:44-52

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure, hidden in a field, that a person found and hid. Then because of joy he went and sold all that he had and bought that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he found a pearl of great value, he went out and sold everything he had and bought it.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea that caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, they pulled it ashore, sat down, and put the good fish into containers and threw the bad away. It will be this way at the end of the age. Angels will come and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

“Have you understood all these things?” They replied, “Yes. ”Then he said to them, “Therefore every expert in the law who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and old. ”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

O springs of water, sea, and streams,
O whales and all that move in/the wat-ers.
All birds of/the air, glori-fy the Lord,

Glori-fy the Lord, O beasts of/the wild,
and all you flocks and herds.
O men and women every-where, glori-fy the Lord,

You that are holy and hum-ble of heart, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let us glori-fy the Lord: Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
In/the firma-ment of his power, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
