How blessed is the one who takes shelter in him!
Fear the Lord, you chosen people of his,
For those who fear him lack noth-ing!
E-ven young lions some-times lack food and are hun-gry.

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Come children! List-en to me!
I will teach you what it means to fear the Lord.
Do you want to really live?

Would you love to live a long, happy life?
Then make sure you don’t speak evil words or use de-cep-tive speech!
Turn a-way from evil and do what is right!
Strive for peace and pro-mote it!

The Lord pays at-ten-tion to/the god-ly
and hears their cry for help.
But the Lord op-poses evil-do-ers
and wipes out all memo-ry of them from/the earth.

The god-ly cry out and the Lord hears;
he saves them from all their trou-ble.
The Lord is near the broken heart-ed;
he de-livers those who are dis-cour-aged.

The god-ly face many dan-gers,
but the Lord saves them from each one of them.
He pro-tects all his bones;
not one of them is bro-ken.

E-vil people self-de-struct;
those who hate the god-ly are pun-ished.
The Lord res-cues his serv-ants;
all who take shelter in him es-cape punish-ment.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,

Readings

A reading from Acts 24:10-21

When the governor gestured for him to speak, Paul replied, “Because I know that you have been a judge over this nation for many years, I confidently make my defense. As you can verify for yourself, not more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. They did not find me arguing with anyone or stirring up a crowd in the temple courts or in the synagogues or throughout the city, nor can they prove to you the things they are accusing me of doing. But I confess this to you, that I worship the God of our ancestors according to the Way (which they call a sect), believing everything that is according to the law and that is written in the prophets. I have a hope in God (a hope that these men themselves accept too) that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. This is the reason I do my best to always have a clear conscience toward God and toward people. After several years I came to bring to my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings, which I was doing when they found me in the temple, ritually purified, without a crowd or a disturbance. But there are some Jews from the province of Asia who should be here before you and bring charges, if they have anything against me. Or these men here should tell what crime they found me guilty of when I stood before the council, other than this one thing I shouted out while I stood before them: ‘I am on trial before you today concerning the resurrection of the dead.’”

Your ways are ways of righteous-ness and truth,

and sing the praises of your Name?
for you only are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and holy works

A reading from Luke 14:12-24

He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid. But when you host an elaborate meal, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Then you will be blessed because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

When one of those at the meal with Jesus heard this, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will feast in the kingdom of God!” But Jesus said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time for the banquet he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’ But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going out to examine them. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I just got married, and I cannot come.’ So the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the master of the household was furious and said to his slave, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ Then the slave said, ‘Sir, what you instructed has been done, and there is still room.’ So the master said to his slave, ‘Go out to the highways and country roads and urge people to come in, so that my house will be filled. For I tell you, not one of those individuals who were invited will taste my banquet!’”

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty sav-ior,
born of/the house of his servant Da-vid.

Through his holy proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our ene-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-member his holy cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from/the hands of our ene-mies,
Free to wor-ship him without fear,

ho-ly and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
