Invitation

Thursday - Lent Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

If we say we have no sin, we de-ceive our-selves,
and the truth is not in us;
but if we con-fess our sins, God who is faithful and just,
will for-give and cleanse us from all un-righteous-ness.

Rend your hearts and not your gar-ments.
Re-turn to/the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merci-ful, slow to an-ger
and a-bounding in steadfast love, and re-pents of e-vil.

I will rise and go to my fa-ther,
and say to him, Fa-ther, I have sinned
a-gainst heaven, and be-fore you;
I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

To the Lord be-long mercy and for-give-ness,
be-cause we have re-belled a-gainst him
and have not o Lord
by follow-ing his laws which he set be-fore us.

Je-sus said, If any-one will come af-ter me,
let him de-ny him-self, take up his cross, and follow me.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouth shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Thursday - Venite

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 50

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

El, God, the Lord has spo-ken,
and summoned the earth to come from east and west.
From Zi-on, the most beauti-ful of all plac-es,
God has come in splen-dor.

May our God come and not be si-lent.
Con-suming fire goes a-head of him
and all a-round him a storm rag-es.
He summons the heavens a-bove, as well as the earth,

so that he might judge his peo-ple.
He says: As-sem-ble my cove-nant people be-fore me,
those who rati-fied a cove-nant with me by sacri-fice!
The heavens de-clare his fair-ness, for God is judge.

He says: List-en my peo-ple!
I am speaking! List-en Is-ra-el!
I am ac-cusing you! I am God, your God!
I am not con-demning you be-cause of your sacri-fic-es,

or be-cause of your burnt sacri-fic-es
that you con-tin-ual-ly offer me.
I don't need to take bulls from your house-hold
nor goats from your sheep-fold.

For every wild ani-mal in/the forest be-longs to me,
as well as the cattle that graze on/a thou-sand hills.
I keep track of every bird in/the hills,
and the in-sects of/the field are mine.

Even if I were hungry, I won't tell you,
for the world and all it con-tains be-long to me.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls?
Do I drink the blood of goats?

Pre-sent to God a thank offer-ing!
Re-pay your vows to/the Most High!
Pray to me when you are in trou-ble!
I will de-liver you, and you will hon-or me!

God says this to/the evil-do-ers:
How can you de-clare my com-mands,
and talk a-bout my cove-nant?
For you hate in-struc-tion and re-ject my words.

When you see a thief, you join him;
you as-so-ciate with men who are un-faithful to their wives.
You do damage with words, and use your tongue to de-ceive.
You plot a-gainst your broth-er;

You slander your own broth-er.
When you did these things, I was si-lent,
so you thought I was ex-actly like you.
But now I will con-demn you

I will state my case a-gainst you!
Care-ful-ly con-sider this,
you who re-ject God!
Other-wise I will rip you to shreds

And no one will be able to res-cue you.
Who-ever pre-sents a thank offer-ing hon-ors me.
To who-ever o-beys my com-mands,
I will re-veal my power to de-liv-er.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Deuteronomy 9:23-10:5

And when he sent you from Kadesh Barnea and told you, “Go up and possess the land I have given you,” you rebelled against the Lord your God and would neither believe nor obey him. You have been rebelling against him from the very first day I knew you!

I lay flat on the ground before the Lord for 40 days and nights, for he had said he would destroy you. I prayed to him: O, Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people, your valued property that you have powerfully redeemed, whom you brought out of Egypt by your strength. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; ignore the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of these people. Otherwise the people of the land from which you brought us will say, “The Lord was unable to bring them to the land he promised them, and because of his hatred for them he has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.” They are your people, your valued property, whom you brought out with great strength and power.

At that same time the Lord said to me, “Carve out for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones and come up the mountain to me; also make for yourself a wooden ark. I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the first tablets you broke, and you must put them into the ark.” So I made an ark of acacia wood and carved out two stone tablets just like the first ones. Then I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. The Lord then wrote on the tablets the same words, the Ten Commandments, which he had spoken to you at the mountain from the middle of the fire at the time of that assembly, and he gave them to me. Then I turned, went down the mountain, and placed the tablets into the ark I had made—they are still there, just as the Lord commanded me.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Creation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glori-fy the Lord, all you works of/the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for-ev-er.
In/the firma-ment of his power, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, you an-gels and all powers of/the Lord,
O heavens and all waters a-bove the heav-ens.
Sun and moon and stars of/the sky, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, eve-ry shower of rain and fall of dew,
all winds and fire and heat.
Win-ter and Sum-mer, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O chill and cold,
drops of dew and flakes of snow.
Frost and cold, ice and sleet, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O nights and days,
O shin-ing light and en-fold-ing dark.
Storm clouds and thunder-bolts, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let the earth glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
Glori-fy the Lord, O mountains and hills, and all/that grows up-on the earth,
praise him for ev-er. Glori-fy the Lord,

O springs of water, sea, and streams,
O whales and all that move in/the wat-ers.
All birds of/the air, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O beasts of/the wild,
and all you flocks and herds.
O men and women every-where, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let the people of God glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
Glori-fy the Lord, O priests and servants of/the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Glori-fy the Lord, O spirits and souls of/the right-eous
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
You that are holy and hum-ble of heart, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

Let us glori-fy the Lord: Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.
In/the firma-ment of his power, glori-fy the Lord,
praise him and highly ex-alt him for ev-er.

A reading from John 3:16-21

For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil deeds hates the light and does not come to the light, so that their deeds will not be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Mary

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

My soul pro-claims the greatness of/the Lord,
my spirit re-joices in God my Sav-ior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly serv-ant.
From this day all gener-a-tions will call me blessed:

the Al-might-y has done great things for me,
and _ holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in eve-ry gener-a-tion.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their con-ceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the low-ly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent/a-way emp-ty.
He has come to/the help of his servant Is-ra-el,
for he has re-membered his prom-ise of mer-cy,

The prom-ise he made to our fath-ers,
to Abra-ham and his children for-ev-er.
My soul pro-claims the greatness of/the Lord,
my spirit re-joices in God my Sav-ior;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Prayers

Thursday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

De-liver us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,
now and for-ever A-men.

Save your peo-ple, Lord,
and bless your in-herit-ance;
Gov-ern and guide them, Lord
and up-hold them, now and al-ways.

Day by day we bless you;
We praise your name for-ever.
Lord, keep us from all sin to-day;
Have mer-cy on us, Lord, have mer-cy.

Lord, show us your love and mer-cy;
For we put our trust in you.
In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
