Evening Prayer - Tuesday February 23 2021

Invitation

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Tuesday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 47

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

All you na-tions, clap your hands!
Shout out to God in cele-bra-tion!
For the Lord Most High is awe-in-spir-ing;
he is the great king who rules the whole earth!

He sub-dued na-tions be-neath us
and countries un-der our feet.
He picked out for us a special land
to be a source of pride for Ja-cob, whom he loves.

God has a-scended his throne a-mid loud shouts;
the Lord has a-scended a-mid the blaring of rams horns.
Sing to God! Sing!
Sing to God our king! Sing!

For God is king of/the whole earth!
Sing a well-writ-ten song!
God reigns over the na-tions!
God sits on his holy throne!

The nobles of/the na-tions as-sem-ble,
a-long with/the people of/the God of A-bra-ham,
for God has au-thor-ity over the rulers of/the earth.
He is high-ly ex-alt-ed!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men

Psalm 48

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord is great and certain-ly worthy of praise
in the city of our God, his holy hill.
It is lofty and pleasing to look at,
a source of joy to/the whole earth.

Mount Zi-on re-sem-bles the peaks of Za-phon;
it is the city of/the great king.
God is in its for-tress;
he re-veals him-self as its de-fend-er.

For look, the kings as-sem-ble;
they ad-vance to-geth-er.
As soon as they see, they are shocked;
they are terri-fied, they quickly re-treat.

Look at them shake uncon-trol-la-bly,
like a woman writh-ing in child-birth.
With an east wind you shatter the large ship.
We heard a-bout God's mighty deeds,

Now we have seen them,
in the city of/the Lord of Heaven’s Ar-my,
in the city of our God.
God makes it perma-nent-ly se-cure.

We re-flect on your loyal love, O God, with-in your tem-ple.
The praise you re-ceive as far a-way as the ends of/the earth
is worthy of your repu-ta-tion, O God. You exe-cute jus-tice!
Mount Zi-on re-joices; the towns of Ju-dah are hap-py,

be-cause of your acts of judg-ment.
Walk a-round Zi-on! En-cir-cle it!
Count its tow-ers!
Con-sid-er its de-fense!

Walk through its for-tress,
so you can tell the next gener-a-tion a-bout it!
For God, our God, is our de-fender for-ev-er!
It is the Lord who guides us!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Hebrews 3:1-11

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partners in a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess, who is faithful to the one who appointed him, as Moses was also in God’s house. For he has come to deserve greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house deserves greater honor than the house itself! For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken. But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. We are of his house, if in fact we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope we take pride in.

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

“Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks!

Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness.

There your fathers tested me and tried me, and they saw my works for forty years.

Therefore, I became provoked at that generation and said, ‘Their hearts are always wandering, and they have not known my ways.’

As I swore in my anger, ‘They will never enter my rest!’”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Song to the Lamb

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Splendor and honor and king-ly power
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-ated every-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-ated and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fami-ly, lan-guage, people, and na-tion,
a kingdom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on/the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be worship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for-ever and for-ever-more.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A reading from John 2:13-22

Now the Jewish Feast of Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

He found in the temple courts those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at tables. So he made a whip of cords and drove them all out of the temple courts, with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold the doves he said, “Take these things away from here! Do not make my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will devour me.”

So then the Jewish leaders responded, “What sign can you show us, since you are doing these things?” Jesus replied, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again.” Then the Jewish leaders said to him, “This temple has been under construction for 46 years, and are you going to raise it up in three days?” But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body. So after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the saying that Jesus had spoken.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Third Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

A-rise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of/the Lord has dawned up-on you.
For be-hold, dark-ness covers the land;
deep gloom en-shrouds the peo-ples.

But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will ap-pear up-on you.
Na-tions will stream to your light,
and kings to/the bright-ness of your dawn-ing.

Your gates will al-ways be o-pen;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of/the Lord,
The Zi-on of/the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

Vio-lence will/no more be heard in your land,
ru-in or de-struc-tion with-in your bor-ders.
You will call your walls, Sal-va-tion,
and all your por-tals, Praise.

The sun will/no more be your light by day;
by night you will/not need the brightness of/the moon.
The Lord will be your ever-last-ing light,
and your God will be your glo-ry.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever. A-men.

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Aid against Perils

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
