Evening Prayer - Tuesday February 2 2021

Invitation

Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.

Amen

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep us in eternal life.

Amen

Tuesday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 48

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord is great and certain-ly worthy of praise
in the city of our God, his holy hill.
It is lofty and pleasing to look at,
a source of joy to/the whole earth.

Mount Zi-on re-sem-bles the peaks of Za-phon;
it is the city of/the great king.
God is in its for-tress;
he re-veals him-self as its de-fend-er.

For look, the kings as-sem-ble;
they ad-vance to-geth-er.
As soon as they see, they are shocked;
they are terri-fied, they quickly re-treat.

Look at them shake uncon-trol-la-bly,
like a woman writh-ing in child-birth.
With an east wind you shatter the large ship.
We heard a-bout God's mighty deeds,

Now we have seen them,
in the city of/the Lord of Heaven’s Ar-my,
in the city of our God.
God makes it perma-nent-ly se-cure.

We re-flect on your loyal love, O God, with-in your tem-ple.
The praise you re-ceive as far a-way as the ends of/the earth
is worthy of your repu-ta-tion, O God. You exe-cute jus-tice!
Mount Zi-on re-joices; the towns of Ju-dah are hap-py,

be-cause of your acts of judg-ment.
Walk a-round Zi-on! En-cir-cle it!
Count its tow-ers!
Con-sid-er its de-fense!

Walk through its for-tress,
so you can tell the next gener-a-tion a-bout it!
For God, our God, is our de-fender for-ev-er!
It is the Lord who guides us!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Psalm 87

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord's city is in/the holy hills.
The Lord loves the gates of Zi-on
more than all/the dwelling places of Ja-cob.
and the Most High makes her se-cure.

Peo-ple say wonder-ful things a-bout you, O city of God.
and the Most High makes her se-cure.
I men-tion Ra-hab and Baby-lon to my follow-ers.
Here are Phi-listi-a and Tyre, a-long with Ethi-o-pi-a.

It/is said of them, This one was born there.
But it/is said of Zi-on's res-i-dents,
Each one of these was born in her,
and the Most High makes her se-cure.

The Lord writes in/the census book of/the na-tions,
This one was born in Zi-on.
As for/the sing-ers, as well/as the pip-ers
all of them sing with-in your walls.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Haggai 2:1-9

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the Lord’s message came through the prophet Haggai again: “Ask the following questions to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the remnant of the people: ‘Who among you survivors saw the former splendor of this temple? How does it look to you now? Isn’t it nothing by comparison?’ Even so, take heart, Zerubbabel,” decrees the Lord. “Take heart, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And take heart all you citizens of the land,” decrees the Lord, “and begin to work. For I am with you,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“Do not fear, because I made a promise to your ancestors when they left Egypt, and my Spirit even now testifies to you.” Moreover, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said: “In just a little while I will once again shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry ground. I will also shake up all the nations, and they will offer their treasures; then I will fill this temple with glory.” So the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said.

“The silver and gold will be mine,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “The future splendor of this temple will be greater than that of former times,” the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared. “And in this place I will give peace,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - First Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Sure-ly, it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be a-fraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure de-fense,
and he will be my Sav-ior.

There-fore you shall draw water with re-joic-ing
from the springs of sal-va-tion.
And on that day you shall say,
Give thanks to/the Lord and call up-on his Name;

Make his deeds known a-mong the peo-ples;
see that they re-member that his Name is ex-alt-ed.
Sing the praises of/the Lord,
for he has done great things,

And this is known in all the world.
Cry a-loud, in-habit-ants of Zi-on, ring out your joy,
for the great one in/the midst of you
is the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

A reading from 1 John 3:1-8

(See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that we should be called God’s children—and indeed we are! For this reason the world does not know us: Because it did not know him. Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that whenever it is revealed we will be like him because we will see him just as he is. And everyone who has this hope focused on him purifies himself, just as Jesus is pure).

Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; indeed, sin is lawlessness. And you know that Jesus was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. Everyone who resides in him does not sin; everyone who sins has neither seen him nor known him. Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Jesus is righteous. The one who practices sin is of the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed: to destroy the works of the devil.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain

Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your minis-ters with righteous-ness;
Let your people sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safe-ty.

And guide us in/the way of justice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;

And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Aid against Perils

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.
