Invitation

Wednesday - Epiphany Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Na-tions shall come to your light,
and kings to/the brightness of your ris-ing.
I will give you as/a light to/the na-tions,
that my sal-vation may reach to/the end of/the earth.

From the rising of/the sun to its set-ting
my Name shall be great a-mong the na-tions,
and in every place
in-cense shall be offered to my Name,

and a pure offer-ing: for my Name shall be great
a-mong the na-tions, says the Lord of Hosts.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouth shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Wednesday - Venite

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 119:49-72

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Re-member your word to your serv-ant,
for you have given me hope.
For Solo-mon. O God, grant the king
the a-bili-ty to make just de-ci-sions!

Grant the king’s son
the a-bili-ty to make fair de-ci-sions!
Then he will judge your people fair-ly,
and your op-pressed ones equi-ta-bly.

The mountains will bring news of peace to/the peo-ple,
and the hills will an-nounce jus-tice.
He will de-fend the op-pressed a-mong the peo-ple;
he will de-liver the children of/the poor and crush the op-pres-sor.

People will fear you as long/as the sun and moon re-main in/the sky,
for gener-a-tion after gener-a-tion.
He will de-scend like rain on/the mown grass,
like showers that drench the earth.

During his days the god-ly will flour-ish;
peace will pre-vail as long/as the moon re-mains in/the sky.
May he rule from sea to sea,
and from/the Eu-phra-tes Riv-er to/the ends of/the earth!

Be-fore him the coastlands will bow down,
and his ene-mies will lick the dust.
The kings of Tar-shish and the coastlands will of-fer gifts;
the kings of She-bah and Se-bah will bring trib-ute.

All kings will bow down to him;
all na-tions will serve him.
For he will res-cue the needy when they cry out for help,
and the op-pressed who have no de-fend-er.

He will take pity on/the poor and need-y;
the lives of/the needy he will save.
From harm and vio-lence he will de-fend them;
he will val-ue their lives.

May he live! May they offer him gold from She-bah!
May they con-tin-ual-ly pray for him!
May they pro-nounce blessings on him all day long!
May there be an a-bundance of grain in/the earth;

On the tops of/the mountains may it sway!
May its fruit trees flour-ish like the forests of Leb-a-non!
May its crops be as a-bundant as the grass of/the earth!
May his fame and glory en-dure!

May his dy-nasty last as long/as the sun re-mains in/the sky!
May they use his name when they com-pose their bles-sings!
May all na-tions con-sider him to be fa-vored by God!
The Lord God, the God of Is-ra-el, de-serves praise!

He a-lone ac-com-plishes a-mazing things!
His glori-ous name de-serves praise for-ever-more!
May his ma-jestic splendor fill the whole earth!
We a-gree! We a-gree! A-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Isaiah 49:1-12

Listen to me, you coastlands!
Pay attention, you people who live far away!
The Lord summoned me from birth;
he commissioned me when my mother brought me into the world.

He made my mouth like a sharp sword,
he hid me in the hollow of his hand;
he made me like a sharpened arrow,
he hid me in his quiver.

He said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, through whom I will reveal my splendor.”

But I thought, “I have worked in vain;
I have expended my energy for absolutely nothing.”
But the Lord will vindicate me;
my God will reward me.

So now the Lord says,
the one who formed me from birth to be his servant—
he did this to restore Jacob to himself,
so that Israel might be gathered to him;
and I will be honored in the Lord’s sight,
for my God is my source of strength—

he says, “Is it too insignificant a task for you to be my servant,
to reestablish the tribes of Jacob,
and restore the remnant of Israel?
I will make you a light to the nations,
so you can bring my deliverance to the remote regions of the earth.”

This is what the Lord,
the Protector of Israel, their Holy One, says
to the one who is despised and rejected by nations,
a servant of rulers:
“Kings will see and rise in respect,
princes will bow down,
because of the faithful Lord,
the Holy One of Israel who has chosen you.”

This is what the Lord says:
“At the time I decide to show my favor, I will respond to you;
in the day of deliverance I will help you;
I will protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people,
to rebuild the land
and to reassign the desolate property.

You will say to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’
and to those who are in dark dungeons, ‘Emerge.’
They will graze beside the roads;
on all the slopes they will find pasture.

They will not be hungry or thirsty;
the sun’s oppressive heat will not beat down on them,
for one who has compassion on them will guide them;
he will lead them to springs of water.

I will make all my mountains into a road;
I will construct my roadways.”

Look, they come from far away!
Look, some come from the north and west,
and others from the land of Sinim.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Wednesday - Glory to God

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glory to God in/the high-est,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heaven-ly King,
al-might-y God and Fath-er,

We worship you, we give you thanks,
We praise you for your glo-ry.
Lord Je-sus Christ, only Son of/the Fath-er,
Lord God, _ Lamb of God,

You take/a-way the sin of/the world:
have mer-cy up-on us;
you are seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er:
re-ceive _ our pray-er.

For you a-lone are/the Ho-ly One,
You a-lone are the Lord,
You a-lone are/the Most High, Je-sus Christ,
with/the Ho-ly Spi-rit, in/the glory of God the Fath-er.

A reading from Mark 6:13-29

They cast out many demons and anointed many sick people with olive oil and healed them.

Now King Herod heard this, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead, and because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.” Others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past.” But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!” For Herod himself had sent men, arrested John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had repeatedly told Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not because Herod stood in awe of John and protected him, since he knew that John was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, and yet he liked to listen to John.

But a suitable day came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” He swore to her, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.” So she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” Her mother said, “The head of John the baptizer.” Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request: “I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.” Although it grieved the king deeply, he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests. So the king sent an executioner at once to bring John’s head, and he went and beheaded John in prison. He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John’s disciples heard this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Wednesday - Second Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Seek the Lord while he wills to/be found;
call up-on him when he draws near.
Let the wicked for-sake their ways
and the evil ones their thoughts;

And let them turn to/the Lord,
and he will have com-passion,
Let then re-turn to our God,
for he will rich-ly par-don.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,

and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from/the heav-ens
and re-turns not a-gain,
but wat-ers the whole earth,

Bring-ing forth life
and giving a-bun-dant growth
And seed for re-plan-ting
and bread and fruit for eat-ing,

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it will not re-turn to me emp-ty;
But it will ac-com-plish that which I have pur-posed,
and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,

Almighty God, the giver of all good gifts, in your divine providence you have appointed various orders in your Church: Give your grace, we humbly pray, to all who are [now] called to any office and ministry for your people; and so fill them with the truth of your doctrine and clothe them with holiness of life, that they may faithfully serve before you, to the glory of your great Name and for the benefit of your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
