Invitation

Friday - Epiphany Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Na-tions shall come to your light,
and kings to/the brightness of your ris-ing.
I will give you as/a light to/the na-tions,
that my sal-va-tion may reach to/the end of/the earth.

From the rising of/the sun to its set-ting
my Name shall be great a-mong the na-tions,
and in eve-ry place
in-cense shall be offered to my Name,

and a pure offer-ing: for my Name shall be great
a-mong the na-tions, says the Lord of Hosts.
Lord, o-pen our lip.
And our mouth shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Friday - Venite

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.

The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!

Psalms

Psalm 16

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Pro-tect me, O God,
for I have taken shelter in you.
I say to/the Lord,
You are the Lord, my only source of well-being.

As for God's chosen people who are in/the land,
and the leading of-fi-cials I ad-mired so much
their trou-bles multi-ply;
they _ de-sire other gods.

I will not pour out
drink offer-ings of blood to their gods,
nor will I make vows in/the name of their gods.
Lord, you give me sta-bili-ty and pros-per-i-ty;

You make my future se-cure.
It is as if I have been given fer-tile fields
or re-ceived a beauti-ful tract of land.
I will praise the Lord who guides me;

Yes, during the night I re-flect and learn.
I constant-ly trust in/the Lord;
be-cause he is at my right hand,
I will not be shak-en.

So I am hap-py;
and my heart re-joices in God
My life is safe.
You will not a-ban-don me to She-ol;

You will not al-low your follow-er to see the Pit.
You lead me in/the path of life;
I ex-peri-ence ab-so-lute joy in your pres-ence;
you al-ways give me sheer de-light.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Psalm 17

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, con-sider my just cause!
Pay at-ten-tion to my cry for help!
List-en to/the prayer I sin-cere-ly of-fer!
Make a just de-ci-sion on my be-half!

De-cide what is right!
You have scrutin-ized my inner mo-tives;
you have ex-am-ined me during the night.
You have careful-ly e-val-uat-ed me,

but you find no sin.
I am de-ter-mined I will say nothing sin-ful.
Just as you have com-mand-ed,
I have not fo-llowed in/the foot-steps of vio-lent men.

I careful-ly o-bey your com-mands;
I do not de-viate from them.
I call to you for you will an-swer me, O God.
List-en to me! Hear what I say!

Ac-com-plish awe-some, faithful deeds,
you who power-ful-ly de-liver those
who look to you for pro-tec-tion from their ene-mies.
Pro-tect me as you would/the pu-pil of your eye!

Hide me in/the shadow of your wings!
Pro-tect me from/the wicked men who at-tack me,
my ene-mies who crowd a-round me for/the kill.
They are cal-loused; they speak arro-gant-ly.

They at-tack me, now they sur-round me;
they in-tend to throw me to/the ground.
He is like a lion that wants to tear its prey to bits,
like a young lion crouch-ing in hid-den plac-es.

Rise up, Lord! Con-front him!
Knock him down! Use your sword
to res-cue me from/the wicked man!
Lord, use your power to de-liver me

from these murder-erz,
from the murder-ers of this world!
They en-joy pros-per-i-ty;
you over-whelm them with/the riches they de-sire.

They have many chil-dren,
and leave their wealth to their off-spring.
Be-cause I am inno-cent I will see your face;
when I a-wake you will re-veal your-self to me.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from Isaiah 42:1-17

“Here is my servant whom I support,
my chosen one in whom I take pleasure.
I have placed my Spirit on him;
he will make just decrees for the nations.

He will not cry out or shout;
he will not publicize himself in the streets.

A crushed reed he will not break,
a dim wick he will not extinguish;
he will faithfully make just decrees.

He will not grow dim or be crushed
before establishing justice on the earth;
the coastlands will wait in anticipation for his decrees.”

This is what the true God, the Lord, says—
the one who created the sky and stretched it out,
the one who fashioned the earth and everything that lives on it,
the one who gives breath to the people on it,
and life to those who live on it:

“I, the Lord, officially commission you;
I take hold of your hand.
I protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people
and a light to the nations,

to open blind eyes,
to release prisoners from dungeons,
those who live in darkness from prisons.

“I am the Lord! That is my name!
I will not share my glory with anyone else
or the praise due me with idols.

Look, my earlier predictive oracles have come to pass;
now I announce new events.
Before they begin to occur,
I reveal them to you.”

Sing to the Lord a brand new song!
Praise him from the horizon of the earth,
you who go down to the sea and everything that lives in it,
you coastlands and those who live there.

Let the wilderness and its cities shout out,
the towns where the nomads of Kedar live.
Let the residents of Sela shout joyfully;
let them shout loudly from the mountaintops.

Let them give the Lord the honor he deserves;
let them praise his deeds in the coastlands.

The Lord emerges like a hero,
like a warrior he inspires himself for battle;
he shouts, yes, he yells,
he shows his enemies his power.

“I have been inactive for a long time;
I kept quiet and held back.
Like a woman in labor I groan;
I pant and gasp.

I will make the trees on the mountains and hills wither up;
I will dry up all their vegetation.
I will turn streams into islands
and dry up pools of water.

I will lead the blind along an unfamiliar way;
I will guide them down paths they have never traveled.
I will turn the darkness in front of them into light
and level out the rough ground.
This is what I will do for them.
I will not abandon them.

Those who trust in idols
will turn back and be utterly humiliated,
those who say to metal images, ‘You are our gods.’

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of Simeon

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-light-en the na-tions,
and the glory of your people Is-ra-el.
Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever. A-men.

A reading from Mark 2:13-22

Jesus went out again by the sea. The whole crowd came to him, and he taught them. As he went along, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax booth. “Follow me,” he said to him. And he got up and followed him. As Jesus was having a meal in Levi’s home, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the experts in the law and the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard this he said to them, “Those who are healthy don’t need a physician, but those who are sick do. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. So they came to Jesus and said, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?” Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they do not fast. But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and at that time they will fast. No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be destroyed. Instead new wine is poured into new wineskins.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of the Redeemed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O rul-er of/the uni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-pas-sing human under-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of righteous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ag-es.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the praises of your Name?
for you only are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and holy works
have been re-vealed. Alle-lu-ia, a-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Prayers

Friday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

Friday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

De-liver us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,
now and for-ever A-men.

Friday - Morning Suffrages B

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Save your peo-ple, Lord,
and bless your in-herit-ance;
Gov-ern and guide them, Lord
and up-hold them, now and al-ways.

Day by day we bless you;
We praise your name for-ever.
Lord, keep us from all sin to-day;
Have mer-cy on us, Lord, have mer-cy.

Lord, show us your love and mer-cy;
For we put our trust in you.
In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.

Collects of the Day

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.

Amen.

Al-might-y God, Fa-ther of all mer-cies,
we your un-worthy serv-ants give you hum-ble thanks
for all your good-ness and loving kind-ness
to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our cre-a-tion, pres-er-va-tion,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your im-measur-able love
in\the re-demp-tion of\the world by our Lord Je-sus Christ;

for\the means of grace, and for\the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give\us such\an a-ware-ness of your mer-cy,
that with truly thank-ful hearts
we may show forth your praise,

not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your ser-vice,
and by walking be-fore you
in holi-ness and righteous-ness all our days;

through Je-sus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
be hon-or and glo-ry
through-out all the ag-es. A-men.
