Advent - Wednesday Invitation
Tenor Soprano Response Cantor Bass Alto PDF All
Watch, for you know not when
the mas-ter of/the house will come,
at dusk, by night, at dawn, or by day;
lest he come sudden-ly and find you a-sleep.
In/the wilder-ness pre-pare the way of/the Lord,
make straight in/the desert a high-way for our God.
The glory of/the Lord shall be re-vealed,
and all flesh shall see/it to-geth-er.
The hour is coming, and now is,
when the true wor-ship-ers
will wor-ship the Fath-er
in spi-rit and in truth,
for such are the follow-ers
the Fath-er seeks to wor-ship him.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouths shall pro-claim your praise.
Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.
Wednesday - Venite

Come, let's sing to/the Lord;
let's shout for joy to/the Rock of our sal-va-tion.
Let's come be-fore his presence with thanks-giv-ing
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.
For the Lord is/a great God,
and a great King a-bove all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of/the earth,
and the heights of/the hills are his al-so.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let's bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel be-fore the Lord our Mak-er.
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pas-ture
and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice!
Psalms
Psalm 72
Tenor Soprano Response Cantor Bass Alto PDF All
O God, grant the king
the a-bili-ty to make just de-ci-sions!
Grant the king's son
the a-bili-ty to make fair de-ci-sions!
Then he will judge your people fair-ly,
and your op-pressed ones eq-ui-ta-bly.
The mountains will bring news of peace to/the peo-ple,
and the hills will an-nounce jus-tice.
He will de-fend the/op-pressed a-mong the peo-ple;
he will de-liver the children of/the poor and crush the op-pres-sor.
Peo-ple will fear you
as long/as the sun and moon re-main in/the sky,
For gener-a-tion af-ter gener-a-tion,
He will de-scend like rain on/the mown grass,
like showers that drench the earth.
During his days the god-ly will flour-ish;
Peace will pre-vail
as long as the moon re-mains in/the sky.
May he rule from sea to sea,
and from/the Eu-phra-tes Riv-er to/the ends of/the earth!
Be-fore him the coast-lands will bow down,
and his ene-mies will lick the dust.
The kings of Tar-shish and the coast lands will of-fer gifts;
the kings of She-bah and Se-bah will bring trib-ute.
All kings will bow down to him;
all na-tions will serve him.
For he will res-cue the needy when they cry out for help,
and the op-pressed who have no de-fend-er.
He will take pity on/the poor and need-y;
the lives of/the need-y he will save.
From harm and vio-lence he will de-fend them;
he will val-ue their lives.
May he live! May they offer him gold from She-bah!
May they con-tin-ual-ly pray for him!
May they pro-nounce blessings on him all day long!
May there be an/a-bun-dance of grain in/the earth;
On the tops of/the mountains may it sway!
May its fruit trees flour-ish like the forests of Leb-a-non!
May his fame en-dure!
May its crops be as/a-bun-dant as the grass of/the earth!
May his dy-nas-ty last
as long/as the sun re-mains in/the sky!
May they use his name when they make their bles-sings!
May all na-tions con-sider him to be fa-vored by God!
The Lord God, the God of Is-ra-el, de-serves praise!
He a-lone ac-com-plishes a-mazing things!
His glo-rious name de-serves praise for-ever-more!
May his ma-jestic splen-dor fill the whole earth!
Al-le-lu-ia! A-men!
Let us praise the Lord our God!
His glo-rious name de-serves praise for-ever-more!
May his ma-jestic splen-dor fill the whole earth!
Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for ever A-men.
Readings
A reading from Isaiah 28:9-22
Who is the Lord trying to teach?
To whom is he explaining a message?
To those just weaned from milk!
To those just taken from their mother’s breast!
Indeed, they will hear meaningless gibberish,
senseless babbling,
a syllable here, a syllable there.
For with mocking lips and a foreign tongue
he will speak to these people.
In the past he said to them,
“This is where security can be found.
Provide security for the one who is exhausted.
This is where rest can be found.”
But they refused to listen.
So the Lord’s message to them will sound like
meaningless gibberish,
senseless babbling,
a syllable here, a syllable there.
As a result, they will fall on their backsides when they try to walk,
and be injured, ensnared, and captured.
Therefore, listen to the Lord’s message,
you who mock,
you rulers of these people
who reside in Jerusalem.
For you say,
“We have made a treaty with death,
with Sheol we have made an agreement.
When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by
it will not reach us.
For we have made a lie our refuge,
we have hidden ourselves in a deceitful word.”
Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord, says:
“Look, I am laying a stone in Zion,
an approved stone,
set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation.
The one who maintains his faith will not panic.
I will make justice the measuring line,
fairness the plumb line;
hail will sweep away the unreliable refuge,
the floodwaters will overwhelm the hiding place.
Your treaty with death will be dissolved;
your agreement with Sheol will not last.
When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by,
you will be overrun by it.
Whenever it sweeps by, it will overtake you;
indeed, every morning it will sweep by,
it will come through during the day and the night.”
When this announcement is understood,
it will cause nothing but terror.
For the bed is too short to stretch out on,
and the blanket is too narrow to wrap around oneself.
For the Lord will rise up, as he did at Mount Perazim;
he will rouse himself, as he did in the Valley of Gibeon,
to accomplish his work,
his peculiar work,
to perform his task,
his strange task.
So now, do not mock,
or your chains will become heavier!
For I have heard a message about decreed destruction,
from the Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies against the entire land.
Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!
Wednesday - Second Song of Isaiah
Tenor Soprano Response Cantor Bass Alto PDF All
Seek the Lord while he wills to/be found;
call up-on him when he draws near.
Let the wicked for-sake their ways
and the evil ones their thoughts;
And let them turn to/the Lord,
and he will have com-passion,
Let then re-turn to our God,
for he will rich-ly par-don.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from/the heav-ens
and re-turns not a-gain,
but wat-ers the whole earth,
Bring-ing forth life
and giving a-bun-dant growth
And seed for re-plan-ting
and bread and fruit for eat-ing,
So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it will not re-turn to me emp-ty;
But it will ac-com-plish that which I have pur-posed,
and prosper in that for which I sent it.
Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.
A reading from Luke 1:26-38
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled by his words and began to wonder about the meaning of this greeting. So the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God! Listen: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.” Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.
“And look, your relative Elizabeth has also become pregnant with a son in her old age—although she was called barren, she is now in her sixth month! For nothing will be impossible with God.” So Mary said, “Yes, I am a servant of the Lord; let this happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!
