lest he come sudden-ly and find you a-sleep.

In/the wilder-ness pre-pare the way of/the Lord,
make straight in/the desert a high-way for our God.
The glory of/the Lord shall be re-vealed,
and all flesh shall see/it to-geth-er.

The hour is coming, and now is,
when the true wor-ship-ers
will wor-ship the Fath-er
in spi-rit and in truth,

for such are the follow-ers
the Fath-er seeks to wor-ship him.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouths shall pro-claim your praise.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:

Lis-ten, O prin-cess! Ob-serve and pay at-ten-tion!
For-get your home-land and your fam-i-ly!
Then the king will be at-tracted by your beau-ty.

Af-ter all, he is your master! Sub-mit to him!
Rich people from Tyre seek your favor by bringing a gift.
The prin-cess looks abso-lute-ly mag-nif-i-cent,
Decked out in pearls and grace-fully clothed

In a bro-cade trimmed with gold.
In em-broidered robes she is es-corted to/the king.
Her at-tendants, the maidens of hon-or, are led be-fore you.
They are full of joy as they walk in pro-ces-sion into the pal-ace.

Your sons will carry on/the dy-nas-ty of your an-ces-tors;
you will make them princes through-out the land.
I will pro-claim your greatness through the coming years,
Then the na-tions will praise you for-ev-er.

Readings

A reading from Isaiah 9:1-7


(8:23) The gloom will be dispelled for those who were anxious.
In earlier times he humiliated
the land of Zebulun,
and the land of Naphtali;
but now he brings honor
to the way of the sea,
the region beyond the Jordan,
and Galilee of the nations.

(9:1) The people walking in darkness
see a bright light;
light shines
on those who live in a land of deep darkness.

You have enlarged the nation;
you give them great joy.
They rejoice in your presence
as harvesters rejoice;
as warriors celebrate when they divide up the plunder.

For their oppressive yoke
and the club that strikes their shoulders,
the cudgel the oppressor uses on them,
you have shattered, as in the day of Midian’s defeat.

Indeed every boot that marches and shakes the earth
and every garment dragged through blood
is used as fuel for the fire.

For a child has been born to us,
a son has been given to us.
He shoulders responsibility
and is called
Wonderful Adviser,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.

His dominion will be vast,
and he will bring immeasurable prosperity.
He will rule on David’s throne
and over David’s kingdom,
establishing it and strengthening it
by promoting justice and fairness,
from this time forward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will accomplish this.

Splendor and honor and king-ly power
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-ated every-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-ated and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fami-ly, lan-guage, people, and na-tion,
a kingdom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on/the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be worship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for-ever and for-ever-more.

A reading from Luke 22:54-69

Then they arrested Jesus, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter was following at a distance. When they had made a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a slave girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said, “This man was with him too!” But Peter denied it: “Woman, I don’t know him!” Then a little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” And after about an hour still another insisted, “Certainly this man was with him because he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him. They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” They also said many other things against him, reviling him.

When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. Then they led Jesus away to their council and said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

A Collect for Peace

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.
