Thursday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from/the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in/the beau-ty of his holi-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lifting up of my hands as the eve-ning sacri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Thursday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ever-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, holy and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to/the setting of/the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glori-fied through all the worlds.

Psalms

Psalm 33

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

You godly ones, shout for joy be-cause of/the Lord!
It is ap-pro-priate for/the moral-ly up-right to offer him praise.
Give thanks to/the Lord with/the harp!
Sing to him to/the ac-com-pani-ment of a ten stringed in-stru-ment!

Sing to him a new song!
Play skillful-ly as you shout out your praises to him!
For the Lord's de-crees are just,
and every-thing he does is fair.

He pro-motes equi-ty and jus-tice;
the Lord's faithful-ness ex-tends through-out the earth.
By the Lord's de-cree the heavens were made;
and by/the breath of his mouth all the star-ry host.

He piles up the water of/the seas;
he puts the o-ceans in store-hous-es.
Let the whole earth fear the Lord!
Let all who live in/the world stand in awe of him!

For he spoke, and it came into ex-ist-ence,
he issued the de-cree, and it stood firm.
The Lord frus-trates the de-ci-sions of/the na-tion;
he nulli-fies the plans of/the peo-ples.

The Lord's de-ci-sions stand for-ev-er;
his plans a-bide through-out the ag-es.
How blessed is the na-tion whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen to be his special pos-ses-sion.

The Lord watches from heav-en;
and he sees all peo-ples.
From the place where he lives
he looks careful-ly at all the earth's in-habit-ants.

He is the one who forms eve-ry human heart,
and takes note of all their ac-tions.
No king is de-livered by his vast ar-my;
a warri-or is not saved by his great might.

A horse disap-points those who trust in/it for vic-to-ry;
de-spite its great strength, it can-not de-liv-er.
Look, the Lord takes notice of his loyal follow-ers,
those who wait for him to demon-strate his faithful-ness

By saving their lives from death
and sus-tain-ing them during times of fam-ine.
We wait for/the Lord;
he is our de-liver-er and shield.

For our hearts re-joice in him,
for we trust in his holy name.
May we ex-peri-ence your faithful-ness, O Lord,
for we wait up-on you.

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Readings

A reading from 2 Peter 2:10-16

especially those who indulge their fleshly desires and who despise authority.

Brazen and insolent, they are not afraid to insult the glorious ones, yet even angels, who are much more powerful, do not bring a slanderous judgment against them in the presence of the Lord. But these men, like irrational animals—creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed—do not understand whom they are insulting, and consequently in their destruction they will be destroyed, suffering harm as the wages for their harmful ways. By considering it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight, they are stains and blemishes, indulging in their deceitful pleasures when they feast together with you. Their eyes, full of adultery, never stop sinning; they entice unstable people. They have trained their hearts for greed, these cursed children! By forsaking the right path they have gone astray, because they followed the way of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, yet was rebuked for his own transgression (a dumb donkey, speaking with a human voice, restrained the prophet’s madness).

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Simeon

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-light-en the na-tions,
and the glory of your people Is-ra-el.
Lord, you now have set your ser-vant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever. A-men.

A reading from Matthew 3:1-12

In those days John the Baptist came into the wilderness of Judea proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” For he is the one about whom the prophet Isaiah had spoken:

“The voice of one shouting in the wilderness,

‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore clothing made from camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his diet consisted of locusts and wild honey. Then people from Jerusalem, as well as all Judea and all the region around the Jordan, were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance, and don’t think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones! Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthy to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire!”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of the Redeemed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O rul-er of/the uni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-pas-sing human under-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of righteous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ag-es.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the praises of your Name?
for you only are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and holy works
have been re-vealed. Alle-lu-ia, a-men!

Glory to/the Fath-er, and to/the Son,
and to/the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in/the be-ginning, is now,
and will be for-ever A-men.

Prayers

Thursday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heaven and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by/the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of/the Vir-gin Mar-y.
He suffered under Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cruci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scended to/the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scended into heav-en,
and is seated at/the right hand of/the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the living and the dead.
We be-lieve in/the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the _ holy catho-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the resur-rec-tion of/the bod-y,
and the life ever-last-ing. A-men.

Thursday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with _ you.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done on earth
as it is in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.

For-give us our sins
as we _ for-give those
who sin a-gainst us.
Save us from/the time of tri-al,

De-liver us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er,
and the glory are yours,
now and for-ever A-men.

Thursday - Evening Suffrages B

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

That this eve-ning may be ho-ly, good, and peace-ful,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That your holy an-gels may lead us in paths of peace and good-will,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be pardoned and for-given for our sins and of-fens-es,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That there may be peace to your Church and to/the whole world,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may de-part this life in your faith and fear,
and be freed from con-dem-na-tion
be-fore the great judg-ment seat of Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be bound to-gether by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Barna-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-other and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have given us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our common sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-loved Son
that when two or three are gathered in his Name
you will be in/the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in/the age to come life ever-lasting. A-men.

Thursday - Closing Blessings

be with us all ever-more. A-men.

with all joy and peace in be-liev-ing
through the power of/the Ho-ly Spi-rit. A-men.
