Readings

A reading from 2 Peter 2:17-22

These men are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm, for whom the utter depths of darkness have been reserved. For by speaking high-sounding but empty words they are able to entice, with fleshly desires and with debauchery, people who have just escaped from those who reside in error. Although these false teachers promise such people freedom, they themselves are enslaved to immorality. For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved. For if after they have escaped the filthy things of the world through the rich knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they again get entangled in them and succumb to them, their last state has become worse for them than their first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, having known it, to turn back from the holy commandment that had been delivered to them. They are illustrations of this true proverb: “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and “A sow, after washing herself, wallows in the mire.”

A-rise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of/the Lord has dawned up-on you.
For be-hold, dark-ness covers the land;
deep gloom en-shrouds the peo-ples.

But over you the Lord will rise,
and his glory will ap-pear up-on you.
Na-tions will stream to your light,
and kings to/the bright-ness of your dawn-ing.

Your gates will al-ways be o-pen;
by day or night they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of/the Lord,
The Zi-on of/the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

Vio-lence will/no more be heard in your land,
ru-in or de-struc-tion with-in your bor-ders.
You will call your walls, Sal-va-tion,
and all your por-tals, Praise.

The sun will/no more be your light by day;
by night you will/not need the brightness of/the moon.
The Lord will be your ever-last-ing light,

A reading from Matthew 11:2-15

Now when John heard in prison about the deeds Christ had done, he sent his disciples to ask a question: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go tell John what you hear and see: The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them —and blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me!”

While they were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Look, those who wear soft clothing are in the palaces of kings! What did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet! This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way before you.’

“I tell you the truth, among those born of women, no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is! From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and forceful people lay hold of it. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John appeared. And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come. The one who has ears had better listen!

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.
