Re-mem-ber your word to your serv-ant,
for you have giv-en me hope.
For Sol-o-mon. O God, grant the king
the a-bil-i-ty to make just de-ci-sions!

Grant the king’s son
the a-bil-i-ty to make fair de-ci-sions!
Then he will judge your peo-ple fair-ly,
and your op-pressed ones eq-ui-ta-bly.

The moun-tains will bring news of peace to the peo-ple,
and the hills will an-nounce jus-tice.
He will de-fend the op-pressed a-mong the peo-ple;
he will de-liv-er the chil-dren of the poor and crush the op-pres-sor.

Peo-ple will fear you as long as the sun and moon re-main in the sky,
for gen-er-a-tion af-ter gen-er-a-tion.
He will de-scend like rain on the mown grass,
like show-ers that drench the earth.

Dur-ing his days the god-ly will flour-ish;
peace will pre-vail as long as the moon re-mains in the sky.

Be-fore him the coast-lands will bow down,
and his en-e-mies will lick the dust.
The kings of Tar-shish and the coast-lands will of-fer gifts;
the kings of She-bah and Se-bah will bring trib-ute.

All kings will bow down to him;
all na-tions will serve him.
For he will res-cue the need-y when they cry out for help,
and the op-pressed who have no de-fend-er.

He will take pit-y on the poor and need-y;
the lives of the need-y he will save.
From harm and vio-lence he will de-fend them;
he will val-ue their lives.

May he live! May they of-fer him gold from She-bah!
May they con-tin-ual-ly pray for him!
May they pro-nounce bles-sings on him all day long!
May there be an a-bun-dance of grain in the earth;

On the tops of the moun-tains may it sway!
May its fruit trees flour-ish like the for-ests of Leb-a-non!

A reading from Sirach 28:14-26

Slander has shaken many,
and scattered them from nation to nation,
and destroyed strong cities,
and overturned the houses of great men.
Slander has driven away courageous women,
and deprived them of the fruit of their toil.
Whoever pays heed to slander will not find rest,
nor will he settle down in peace.
The blow of a whip raises a welt,
but a blow of the tongue crushes the bones.
Many have fallen by the edge of the sword,
but not so many as have fallen because of the tongue.
Happy is the man who is protected from it,
who has not been exposed to its anger,
who has not borne its yoke,
and has not been bound with its fetters;
for its yoke is a yoke of iron,
and its fetters are fetters of bronze;
its death is an evil death,
and Hades is preferable to it.
It will not be master over the godly,
and they will not be burned in its flame.
Those who forsake the Lord will fall into its power;
it will burn among them and will not be put out.
It will be sent out against them like a lion;
like a leopard it will mangle them.
See that you fence in your property with thorns,
lock up your silver and gold,
make balances and scales for your words,
and make a door and a bolt for your mouth.
Beware lest you err with your tongue,
lest you fall before him who lies in wait.\

Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow-er and might,
heav-en and earth are full of your glo-ry.

The glo-ri-ous com-pa-ny of a-pos-tles praise you.
The no-ble fel-low-ship of proph-ets praise you.
The white robed ar-my of mar-tyrs praise you.
Through-out the world the ho-ly Church ac-claims you;

Fath-er, of maj-es-ty un-bound-ed,
your true and on-ly Son, wor-thy of all wor-ship,

A reading from Luke 11:37-52

As he spoke, a Pharisee invited Jesus to have a meal with him, so he went in and took his place at the table. The Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus did not first wash his hands before the meal. But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Didn’t the one who made the outside make the inside as well? But give from your heart to those in need, and then everything will be clean for you.

“But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of your mint, rue, and every herb, yet you neglect justice and love for God! But you should have done these things without neglecting the others. Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces! Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without realizing it!”

One of the experts in religious law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us too.” But Jesus replied, “Woe to you experts in religious law as well! You load people down with burdens difficult to bear, yet you yourselves refuse to touch the burdens with even one of your fingers! Woe to you! You build the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed. So you testify that you approve of the deeds of your ancestors because they killed the prophets and you build their tombs! For this reason also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ so that this generation may be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation. Woe to you experts in religious law! You have taken away the key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in.”

Almighty God, the giver of all good gifts, in your divine providence you have appointed various orders in your Church: Give your grace, we humbly pray, to all who are [now] called to any office and ministry for your people; and so fill them with the truth of your doctrine and clothe them with holiness of life, that they may faithfully serve before you, to the glory of your great Name and for the benefit of your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
