Send out your light

El, God, the Lord has spo-ken,
and sum-moned the earth to come from the east and west.
From Zi-on, the most beau-ti-ful of all plac-es,
God has come in splen-dor.

May our God come and not be si-lent.
Con-sum-ing fire goes a-head of him
and all a-round him a storm rag-es.
He sum-mons the heav-ens a-bove, as well as the earth,

so that he might judge his peo-ple.
He says: As-sem-ble my cov-e-nant peo-ple be-fore me,
those who rat-i-fied a cov-e-nant with me by sac-ri-fice!
The heav-ens de-clare his fair-ness, for God is judge.

He says: List-en my peo-ple!
I am speak-ing! List-en Is-ra-el!
I am ac-cus-ing you! I am God, your God!
I am not con-demn-ing you be-cause of your sac-ri-fic-es,

or be-cause of your burnt sac-ri-fic-es
that you con-tin-ual-ly of-fer me.
I do not need to take a bull from your house-hold
or goats from your sheep-fold.

For eve-ry wild an-i-mal in the for-est be-longs to me,
as well as the cat-tle that graze on a thou-sand hills.
I keep track of eve-ry bird in the hills,
and the in-sects of the field are mine.

E-ven if I were hun-gry, I would not tell you,
for the world and all it con-tains be-long to me.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls?
Do I drink the blood of goats?

Pre-sent to God a thank of-fer-ing!
Re-pay your vows to the Most High!
Pray to me when you are in trou-ble!
I will de-liv-er you, and you will hon-or me!

God says this to the e-vil-do-ers:
How can you de-clare my com-mands,
and talk a-bout my cov-e-nant?
For you hate in-struc-tion and re-ject my words.

When you see a thief, you join him;
you as-so-ci-ate with men who are un-faith-ful to their wives.
You do dam-age with words, and use your tongue to de-ceive.
You plot a-gainst your broth-er;

You slan-der your own broth-er.
When you did these things, I was si-lent,
so you thought I was ex-act-ly like you.
But now I will con-demn you

I will state my case a-gainst you!
Care-ful-ly con-sid-er this,
you who re-ject God!
Oth-er-wise I will rip you to shreds

And no one will be a-ble to res-cue you.
Who-ev-er pre-sents a thank of-fer-ing ho-nors me.
To who-ev-er o-beys my com-mands,
I will re-veal my pow-er to de-liv-er.

A reading from Sirach 31:12-18, 25-32:2

Are you seated at the table of a great man?
Do not be greedy at it,
and do not say, There is certainly much upon it!
Remember that a greedy eye is a bad thing.
What has been created more greedy than the eye?
Therefore it sheds tears from every face.
Do not reach out your hand for everything you see,
and do not crowd your neighbor at the dish.
Judge your neighbors feelings by your own,
and in every matter be thoughtful.
Eat like a human being what is set before you,
and do not chew greedily, lest you be hated.
Be the first to stop eating, for the sake of good manners,
and do not be insatiable, lest you give offense.
If you are seated among many persons,
do not reach out your hand before they do.

Do not aim to be valiant over wine,
for wine has destroyed many.
Fire and water prove the temper of steel,
so wine tests hearts in the strife of the proud.
Wine is like life to men,
if you drink it in moderation.
What is life to a man who is without wine?
It has been created to make men glad.
Wine drunk in season and temperately
is rejoicing of heart and gladness of soul.
Wine drunk to excess is bitterness of soul,
with provocation and stumbling.
Drunkenness increases the anger of a fool to his injury,
reducing his strength and adding wounds.
Do not reprove your neighbor at a banquet of wine,
and do not despise him in his merrymaking;
speak no word of reproach to him,
and do not afflict him by making demands of him.

If they make you master of the feast, do not exalt yourself;
be among them as one of them;
take good care of them and then be seated;
when you have fulfilled your duties, take your place,
that you may be merry on their account
and receive a wreath for your excellent leadership.

A reading from Luke 11:53-12:12

When he went out from there, the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly and to ask him hostile questions about many things, plotting against him to catch him in something he might say.

Meanwhile, when many thousands of the crowd had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing is secret that will not be made known. So then whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops.

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more they can do. But I will warn you whom you should fear: Fear the one who, after the killing, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. In fact, even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

“I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before God’s angels. But the one who denies me before men will be denied before God’s angels. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the person who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. But when they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you should make your defense or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you must say.”

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
