my strength and my re-deem-er.

Thus says the high and loft-y One
who in-hab-its e-ter-ni-ty,
whose name is Ho-ly,
I dwell in the high and ho-ly place

Send out your light
and your truth, that they may lead me,
and bring me to your ho-ly hill
and to your dwel-ling place.

Give thanks to the Lord, and call up-on his Name;
make known his deeds a-mong the peo-ples.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouth shall pro-claim your praise.

Be joy-ful in the Lord, all you lands;
serve the Lord with glad-ness
and come be-fore his pres-ence with a song.
Know this: The Lord him-self is God;

He him-self has made us, and we are his;

En-ter his gates with thanks-giv-ing;
go into his courts with praise;

Give thanks to him and call up-on his Name.
Be-cause the Lord is good;
his mer-cy is ev-er last-ing;

Psalm 37:1-18

Do not fret when wick-ed men seem to suc-ceed!
Do not en-vy e-vil-do-ers!
For they will quick-ly dry up like grass,
and with-er a-way like plants.

Trust in the Lord and do what is right!
Set-tle in the land and main-tain your in-teg-ri-ty!
Then you will take de-light in the Lord,
and he will an-swer your prayer.

Com-mit your fu-ture to the Lord!
Trust in him, and he will act on your be-half.
He will vin-di-cate you in broad day-light,
and pub-lic-ly de-fend your just cause.

Wait pa-tient-ly for the Lord!
Wait con-fi-dent-ly for him!
Do not fret o-ver the ap-par-ent suc-cess of a sin-ner,
a man who car-ries out wick-ed schemes!

Do not be an-gry
and do not be frus-trat-ed!
And do not fret!
That on-ly leads to trou-ble!

Wick-ed men will be wiped out,
but those who re-ly on the Lord
are the ones who will pos-sess the land.
E-vil men will soon dis-ap-pear;

you will stare at the spot where they once were,
but they will not be there.
But the op-pressed will pos-sess the land
and en-joy great pros-per-i-ty.

E-vil men plot a-gainst the god-ly
and vi-cious-ly at-tack them.
The Lord laughs in dis-gust at them,
for he knows that their day is com-ing.

E-vil men draw their swords
and they pre-pare their bows,
to bring down the op-pressed and need-y,
and to slaugh-ter those who are god-ly.

Their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and their bows will be bro-ken.
The lit-tle bit that a god-ly man owns is bet-ter
than the wealth of man-y e-vil men,

for e-vil men will lose their pow-er,
but the Lord sus-tains the god-ly.
The Lord watch-es o-ver the in-no-cent day by day
and they pos-sess a per-ma-nent in-her-it-ance.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Sirach 10:1-18

A wise magistrate will educate his people,
and the rule of an understanding man will be well ordered.
Like the magistrate of the people, so are his officials;
and like the ruler of the city, so are all its inhabitants.
An undisciplined king will ruin his people,
but a city will grow through the understanding of its rulers.
The government of the earth is in the hands of the Lord,
and over it he will raise up the right man for the time.
The success of a man is in the hands of the Lord,
and he confers his honor upon the person of the scribe.

Do not be angry with your neighbor for any injury,
and do not attempt anything by acts of insolence.
Arrogance is hateful before the Lord and before men,
and injustice is outrageous to both.
Sovereignty passes from nation to nation
on account of injustice and insolence and wealth.
How can he who is dust and ashes be proud?
for even in life his bowels decay.
A long illness baffles the physician;
the king of today will die tomorrow.
For when a man is dead,
he will inherit creeping things, and wild beasts, and worms.
The beginning of mans pride is to depart from the Lord;
his heart has forsaken his Maker.
For the beginning of pride is sin,
and the man who clings to it pours out abominations.
Therefore the Lord brought upon them extraordinary afflictions,
and destroyed them utterly.
The Lord has cast down the thrones of rulers,
and has seated the lowly in their place.
The Lord has plucked up the roots of the nations,
and has planted the humble in their place.
The Lord has overthrown the lands of the nations,
and has destroyed them to the foundations of the earth.
He has removed some of them and destroyed them,
and has extinguished the memory of them from the earth.
Pride was not created for men,
nor fierce anger for those born of women.

A reading from Luke 10:25-37

Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you understand it?” The expert answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

But the expert, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him up, and went off, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, but when he saw the injured man, he passed by on the other side. So too a Levite, when he came up to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan who was traveling came to where the injured man was, and when he saw him, he felt compassion for him. He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring olive oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever else you spend, I will repay you when I come back this way.’ Which of these three do you think became a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” The expert in religious law said, “The one who showed mercy to him.” So Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
