Evening Prayer - Friday October 23 2020

 Confession

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God, have mercy on us,
forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ,
strengthen us in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit,
keep us in eternal life.
Amen.

VB Hymnal (VB0002) - Savior Breathe An Evening Blessing

Piano    PARTS    Soprano    Alto    Tenor    Bass     PDF

Savior, breathe an evening blessing,

Ere repose our spirits seal;
Sin and want we come confessing,
You can save and You can heal.

Though destruction walks around us,
Though the arrows near us fly,
Angel guards from You surround us;
We are safe if You are nigh.

Though the night be dark and dreary
Darkness cannot hide from You;
You are watching, never weary,
quick to see Your people through.

Should swift death this night o'ertake us,
And our beds become our tombs,
May the morn in heav'n awake us,
Clad in light and deathless blooms.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed | to save | us.
R: O Lord, | make haste | to help | us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 35

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O Lord, fight those who fight with me!
At-tack those who at-tack me!
Grab your small shield and large shield,
and rise up to help me!

Use your spear and lance
a-gainst those who chase me!
As-sure me with these words:
I am your de-liv-er-er!

May those who seek my life
be em-bar-rassed and hu-mil-i-at-ed!
May those who plan to harm me
be turned back and a-shamed!

May they be like wind driv-en chaff,
as the Lord's an-gel at-tacks them!
May their path be dark and slip-per-y,
as the Lord's an-gel chas-es them!

I did not harm them,
but they hid net to catch me
and dug a pit to trap me.
Let de-struc-tion take them by sur-prise!

Let the net they hid catch them!
Let them fall into de-struc-tion!
Then I will re-joice in the Lord
and be hap-py be-cause of his de-liv-er-ance.

With all my strength will say,
O Lord, who can com-pare to you?
You res-cue the op-pressed
from those who try to o-ver-pow-er them;

the op-pressed and need-y
from those who try to rob them.
Vio-lent men per-jure them-selves,
and false-ly ac-cuse me.

They re-pay me e-vil for the good have done;
I am o-ver-whelmed with sor-row.
When they were sick, I wore sack-cloth,
and re-frained from eat-ing food.

If I am ly-ing,
may my prayers go un-an-swered!
mourned for them
as I would for a friend or my broth-er.

I bowed down in sor-row
as if I were mourn-ing for my moth-er.
But when stum-bled,
they re-joiced and ga-thered to-geth-er;

they ga-thered to-geth-er to am-bush me.
They tore at me with-out stop-ping to rest.
When stum-bled,
they taunt-ed me re-lent-less-ly,

and tried to bite me.
O Lord, how long are you go-ing to watch this?
Res-cue me from their de-struc-tive at-tack;
guard my life from the young lions!

Then I will give you thanks in the great as-sem-bly;
I will praise you be-fore a large crowd of peo-ple!
Do not let my en-e-mies gloat o-ver me!
Do not let those who hate me car-ry out their scheme!

For they do not try to make peace with oth-ers,
but plan ways to de-ceive
those who live peace-ful-ly in the land.
They are read-to de-vour me;

they say, A-ha! A-ha! We've got you!
But you take no-tice, Lord; do not be si-lent!
O Lord, do not re-main far a-way from me!
Rouse your-self, wake up and vin-di-cate me!

My God and Lord, de-fend my just cause!
Vin-di-cate me by your jus-tice, Lord my God!
Do not let them gloat o-ver me!
Do not let them say to them-selves, A-ha!

We have what we want-ed!
Do not let them say, We have de-voured him!
May those who re-joice in my trou-bles
be to-tal-ly em-bar-rassed and a-shamed!

May those who ar-ro-gant-ly taunt me be cov-ered with shame
May those who de-sire my vin-di-ca-tion
shout for joy and re-joice!
May they con-tin-ual-ly say, May the Lord be praised,

for he wants his serv-ant to be se-cure.
Then I will tell oth-ers a-bout your jus-tice,
and praise you all day long.
May the Lord be praised for-ev-er!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Revelation 9:13-21

Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a single voice coming from the horns on the golden altar that is before God, saying to the sixth angel, the one holding the trumpet, “Set free the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!” Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour, day, month, and year were set free to kill a third of humanity. The number of soldiers on horseback was 200,000,000; I heard their number. Now this is what the horses and their riders looked like in my vision: The riders had breastplates that were fiery red, dark blue, and sulfurous yellow in color. The heads of the horses looked like lions’ heads, and fire, smoke, and sulfur came out of their mouths. A third of humanity was killed by these three plagues, that is, by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came out of their mouths. For the power of the horses resides in their mouths and in their tails because their tails are like snakes, having heads that inflict injuries. The rest of humanity, who had not been killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands so that they did not stop worshiping demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk about. Furthermore, they did not repent of their murders, of their magic spells, of their sexual immorality, or of their stealing.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of Zechariah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.
He has raised up for us a might-sav-ior,
born of the house of his serv-ant Da-vid.

Through his ho-ly proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our en-e-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-mem-ber his ho-ly cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from the hands of our en-e-mies,
Free to wor-ship him with-out fear,

ho-ly and right-eous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of the Most High,

for you will go be-fore the Lord to pre-pare his way,
To give his peo-ple knowl-edge of sal-va-tion
by the for-give-ness of their sins.
In the ten-der com-pas-sion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those who dwell in dark-ness
and the shad-ow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

A reading from Luke 10:38-42

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he said. But Martha was distracted with all the preparations she had to make, so she came up to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work alone? Tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song to the Lamb

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Splen-dor and ho-nor and king-ly pow-er
are yours by right, Lord our God,
For you cre-at-ed eve-ry-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-at-ed and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fam-i-ly, lan-guage, peo-ple, and na-tion,
a king-dom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be wor-ship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for ev-er and for ev-er-more.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Prayers

Friday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Friday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Friday - Evening Suffrages B

That this eve-ning may be ho-ly, good, and peace-ful,
We en-treat you, Lord.
That your ho-ly an-gels may lead us in paths of peace and good-will,
We en-treat you, Lord.

We en-treat you, Lord.
That there may be peace to your Church and to the whole world,
We en-treat you, Lord.

That we may de-part this life in your faith and fear,
and be freed from con-dem-na-tion
be-fore the great judg-ment seat of Christ,
We en-treat you, Lord.

That we may be bound to-geth-er by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Bar-na-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-oth-er and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, Lord.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Al-might-God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.
