Psalm 106:19-48

They made an im-age of a calf at Ho-reb,
and wor-shiped a met-al i-dol.
They trad-ed their ma-jes-tic God
for the im-age of an ox that eats grass.

They re-ject-ed the God who de-liv-ered them,
the one who per-formed great deeds in E-gypt,
a-maz-ing feats in the land of Ham,
might-y acts by the Red Sea.

He threat-ened to de-stroy them,
but Mo-ses, his cho-sen one,
in-ter-ced-ed with him
and turned back his de-struc-tive an-ger.

They re-ject-ed the fruit-ful land;
they did not be-lieve his prom-ise.
They grum-bled in their tent;
they did not o-bey the Lord.

So he made a sol-emn vow
that he would make them die in the wil-der-ness,
make their de-scend-ants die a-mong the na-tions,
and scat-ter them a-mong for-eign lands.

They wor-shiped Ba-al of Pe-or,
and ate sac-ri-fic-es of-fered to the dead.
They made the Lord an-gry by their ac-tions,
and a plague broke out a-mong them.

Phin-eh-as took a stand and in-ter-vened,
and the plague sub-sid-ed.
This was cred-it-ed to him as a right-eous act
for all gen-er-a-tions to come.

They made him an-gry by the wat-ers of Mer-i-bah,
and Mo-ses suf-fered be-cause of them,
for they a-roused his tem-per,
and so he spoke rash-ly.

They did not de-stroy the na-tions,
as the Lord had com-mand-ed them to do.
They mixed in with the na-tions
and learned their pa-gan ways.

They wor-shiped their i-dols,
which be-came a snare to them.
They sac-ri-ficed their sons and daugh-ters to de-mons.
They shed in-no-cent blood,

the blood of their sons and daugh-ters,
whom they sac-ri-ficed to the i-dols of Ca-naan.
The land was pol-lut-ed by blood-shed.
They were de-filed by their deeds,

They were un-faith-ful in their ac-tions.
So the Lord was an-gry with his peo-ple
and de-spised the peo-ple who be-long to him.
He hand-ed them o-ver to the na-tions,

and those who hat-ed them ruled o-ver them.
Their en-e-mies op-pressed them;
they were sub-ject to their au-thor-i-ty.
Man-y times he de-liv-ered them,

but they had a re-bel-lious at-ti-tude,
and de-grad-ed them-selves by their sin.
Yet he took no-tice of their dis-tress,
when he heard their cry for help.

He re-mem-bered his cov-e-nant with them,
and re-lent-ed be-cause of his great loy-al love.
He caused all their con-quer-ors to have pit-y on them.
De-liv-er us, O Lord, our God!

Gath-er us from a-mong the na-tions!
Then we will give you thanks,
sing-iing praise to your ho-ly name,
and boast-ing a-bout your praise-wor-thy deeds.

The Lord God of Is-ra-el de-serves praise,
in the fu-ture and for-ev-er-more.
Let all the peo-ple say,
We a-gree! Praise the Lord!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,

Readings

A reading from Acts 22:30-23:11

The next day, because the commanding officer wanted to know the true reason Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole council to assemble. He then brought Paul down and had him stand before them.

Paul looked directly at the council and said, “Brothers, I have lived my life with a clear conscience before God to this day.” At that the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth. Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit there judging me according to the law, and in violation of the law you order me to be struck?” Those standing near him said, “Do you dare insult God’s high priest?” Paul replied, “I did not realize, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You must not speak evil about a ruler of your people.’”

Then when Paul noticed that part of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, he shouted out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead!” When he said this, an argument began between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. (For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.) There was a great commotion, and some experts in the law from the party of the Pharisees stood up and protested strongly, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” When the argument became so great the commanding officer feared that they would tear Paul to pieces, he ordered the detachment to go down, take him away from them by force, and bring him into the barracks.

The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Have courage, for just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”

A reading from Luke 6:39-49

He also told them a parable: “Someone who is blind cannot lead another who is blind, can he? Won’t they both fall into a pit? A disciple is not greater than his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to see the beam of wood in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck from your eye,’ while you yourself don’t see the beam in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from brambles. The good person out of the good treasury of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasury produces evil, for his mouth speaks from what fills his heart.

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do what I tell you?

“Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice—I will show you what he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on bedrock. When a flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built. But the person who hears and does not put my words into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against that house, it collapsed immediately and was utterly destroyed!”

Most holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgements, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior.
