Invitation

Pentecost - Tuesday Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord is in his ho-ly tem-ple;
let all the earth keep si-lence be-fore him
I was glad when they said to me,
Let us go to the house of the Lord.

Let the words of my mouth
and the med-i-ta-tion of my heart
be ac-cep-ta-ble in your sight, O Lord,
my strength and my re-deem-er.

Thus says the high and loft-y One
who in-hab-its e-ter-ni-ty,
whose name is Ho-ly,
I dwell in the high and ho-ly place

Send out your light
and your truth, that they may lead me,
and bring me to your ho-ly hill
and to your dwel-ling place.

Give thanks to the Lord, and call up-on his Name;
make known his deeds a-mong the peo-ples.
Lord, o-pen our lips.
And our mouth shall pro-claim your praise.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Tuesday - Jubilate

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Be joy-ful in the Lord, all you lands;
serve the Lord with glad-ness
and come be-fore his pres-ence with a song.
Know this: The Lord him-self is God;

He him-self has made us, and we are his;
we are his peo-ple and the sheep of his pas-ture.
En-ter his gates with thanks-giv-ing;
go into his courts with praise;

Give thanks to him and call up-on his Name.
Be-cause the Lord is good;
his mer-cy is ev-er last-ing;
and his faith-ful-ness en-dures from age to age.

Psalms

Psalm 78:1-39

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Pay at-ten-tion, my peo-ple, to my in-struc-tion!
Lis-ten to the words I speak!
I will sing a song that im-parts wis-dom;
I will make in-sight-ful ob-ser-va-tions a-bout the past.

What we have heard and learned,
that which our an-ces-tors have told us,
we will not hide from their de-scend-ants.
We will tell the next gen-er-a{#eI]-tion

a-bout the Lord's praise-wor-thy acts,
a-bout his strength and the a-maz-ing things he has done.
He es-tab-lished a rule in Ja-cob;
he set up a law in Is-ra-el.

He com-mand-ed our an-ces-tors
to make his deeds known to their de-scend-ants,
so that the next gen-er-a-tion,
chil-dren yet to be born, might know a-bout them.

They will grow up and tell their de-scen-dants a-bout them.
Then they will place their con-fi-dence in God.
They will not for-get the works of God,
and they will o-bey his com-mands.

Then they will not be like their an-ces-tors,
who were a stub-born and re-bel-lious gen-er-a-tion,
a gen-er-a-tion that was not com-mit-ted
nor faith-ful to their God.

The E-phraim-ites were armed with bows,
but they re-treat-ed in the day of bat-tle.
They did not keep their cov-e-nant with God,
and they re-fused to o-bey his law.

They for-got what he had done,
the a-maz-ing things he had shown them.
He did a-maz-ing things in the sight of their an-ces-tors,
in the land of E-gypt, in the re-gion of Zo-an.

He di-vid-ed the sea and led them a-cross it;
he made the wat-er stand in a heap.
He led them with a cloud by day,
and with the light of a fire all night long.

He broke o-pen rocks in the wil-der-ness,
and gave them e-nough wat-er to fill the depths of the sea.
He caused streams to flow from the rock,
and made the wat-er flow like riv-ers.

Yet they con-tin-ued to sin a-gainst him,
and re-belled a-gainst the Most High in the de-sert.
They will-ful-ly chal-lenged God
by ask-ing for food to sat-is-fy their ap-pe-tite.

They in-sult-ed God, say-ing,
Is God real-ly a-ble to give us food in the wil-der-ness?
Yes, he struck a rock and streams gushed forth.
But can he al-so give us food?

Will he pro-vide meat for his peo-ple?
When the Lord heard this, he was fu-ri-ous.
A fire broke out a-gainst Ja-cob,
and his an-ger flared up a-gainst Is-ra-el,

be-cause they did not have faith in God,
and did not trust his a-bil-i-ty to de-liv-er them.
He gave a com-mand to the clouds a-bove,
and o-pened the doors in the sky.

He rained down man-na for them to eat;
he gave them the grain of heav-en.
Man ate the food of the might-y one.
He sent them more than e-nough to eat.

He brought the east wind through the sky,
and by his strength led forth the south wind.
He rained down meat on them like dust,
birds as nu-mer-ous as the sand on the sea-shore.

He caused them to fall in the mid-dle of their camp,
e-ven all a-round their homes.
They ate un-til they were be-yond full;
he gave them what they de-sired.

They were not yet filled up,
their food was still in their mouths,
when the an-ger of God flared up a-gainst them.
He killed some of the strong-est of them;

he brought the young men of Is-ra-el to their knees.
De-spite all this, they con-tin-ued] to sin,
and did not trust him to do a-maz-ing things.
So he caused them to die un-sat-is-fied and filled with ter-ror.

When he struck them down, they sought his fa-vor;
they turned back and longed for God.
They re-mem-bered that God was their pro-tec-tor,
and that God Most High was their de-liv-er-er.

But they de-ceived him with their words, and lied to him.
They were not real-ly com-mit-ted to him,
and they were un-faith-ful to his cov-e-nant.
Yet he is com-pas-sion-ate.

He for-gives sin and does not de-stroy.
He of-ten holds back his an-ger, and does not stir up his fu-ry.
He re-mem-bered that they were made of flesh,
and were like a wind that blows past and does not re-turn.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Esther 5:1-14

It so happened that on the third day Esther put on her royal attire and stood in the inner court of the palace, opposite the king’s quarters. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the palace, opposite the entrance. When the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she met with his approval. The king extended to Esther the gold scepter that was in his hand, and Esther approached and touched the end of the scepter.

The king said to her, “What is on your mind, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even as much as half the kingdom will be given to you!”

Esther replied, “If the king is so inclined, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him.” The king replied, “Find Haman quickly so that we can do as Esther requests.”

So the king and Haman went to the banquet that Esther had prepared. While at the banquet of wine, the king said to Esther, “What is your request? It shall be given to you. What is your petition? Ask for as much as half the kingdom, and it shall be done!”

Esther responded, “My request and my petition is this: If I have found favor in the king’s sight and if the king is inclined to grant my request and perform my petition, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet that I will prepare for them. At that time I will do as the king wishes.”

Now Haman went forth that day pleased and very much encouraged. But when Haman saw Mordecai at the king’s gate, and he did not rise nor tremble in his presence, Haman was filled with rage toward Mordecai. But Haman restrained himself and went on to his home.

He then sent for his friends to join him, along with his wife Zeresh. Haman then recounted to them his fabulous wealth, his many sons, and how the king had magnified him and exalted him over the king’s other officials and servants. Haman said, “Furthermore, Queen Esther invited only me to accompany the king to the banquet that she prepared! And also tomorrow I am invited along with the king. Yet all of this fails to satisfy me so long as I have to see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

Haman’s wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Have a gallows seventy-five feet high built, and in the morning tell the king that Mordecai should be hanged on it. Then go with the king to the banquet contented.”

It seemed like a good idea to Haman, so he had the gallows built.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Song of the Redeemed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O rul-er of the u-ni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-pas-sing hu-man un-der-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of right-eous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ages.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the prais-es of your Name?
for you on-ly are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and ho-ly works
have been re-vealed. Al-le-lu-ia, a-men!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

A reading from Acts 18:12-28

Now while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews attacked Paul together and brought him before the judgment seat, saying, “This man is persuading people to worship God in a way contrary to the law!” But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, I would have been justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews, but since it concerns points of disagreement about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I will not be a judge of these things!” Then he had them forced away from the judgment seat. So they all seized Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue, and began to beat him in front of the judgment seat. Yet none of these things were of any concern to Gallio.

Paul, after staying many more days in Corinth, said farewell to the brothers and sailed away to Syria accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because he had made a vow. When they reached Ephesus, Paul left Priscilla and Aquila behind there, but he himself went into the synagogue and addressed the Jews. When they asked him to stay longer, he would not consent, but said farewell to them and added, “I will come back to you again if God wills.” Then he set sail from Ephesus, and when he arrived at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem and then went down to Antioch. After he spent some time there, Paul left and went through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent speaker, well-versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak out fearlessly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately. When Apollos wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he assisted greatly those who had believed by grace, for he refuted the Jews vigorously in public debate, demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Song of Zechariah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.
He has raised up for us a might-y sav-ior,
born of the house of his serv-ant Da-vid.

Through his ho-ly proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our en-e-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-mem-ber his ho-ly cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from the hands of our en-e-mies,
Free to wor-ship him with-out fear,

ho-ly and right-eous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of the Most High,

for you will go be-fore the Lord to pre-pare his way,
To give his peo-ple knowl-edge of sal-va-tion
by the for-give-ness of their sins.
In the ten-der com-pas-sion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those who dwell in dark-ness
and the shad-ow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Prayers

Tuesday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Tuesday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Tuesday - Morning Suffrages A

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your min-is-ters with right-eous-ness;
Let your peo-ple sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For on-ly in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion un-der your care;
And guide us in the way of jus-tice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health a-mong all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of the poor be tak-en a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, O God;
And sus-tain us with your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

A Collect for Peace

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.

Amen.

General Thanksgiving

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God, Fa-ther of all mer-cies,
we your un-wor-thy serv-ants give you hum-ble thanks
for all your good-ness and lov-ing kind-ness
to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our cre-a-tion, pres-er-va-tion,
and all the bles-sings of this life;
but a-bove all for your im-meas-ur-a-ble love
in the re-demp-tion of the world by our Lord Je-sus Christ;

for the means of grace, and for the hope of glo-ry.
And, we pray, give us such an a-ware-ness of your mer-cy,
that with tru-ly thank-ful hearts
we may show forth your praise,

not on-ly with our lips, but in our lives,
by giv-ing up our selves to your ser-vice,
and by walk-ing be-fore you
in ho-li-ness and right-eous-ness all our days;

through Je-sus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
be ho-nor and glo-ry
through-out all the ag-es. A-men.
