How long will you threat-en a man?

They spend all their time
plan-ning how to bring him down.
They love to use de-ceit;
they pro-nounce bles-sings with their mouths.

But in-ward-ly they ut-ter curs-es.
Pa-tient-ly wait for God a-lone, my soul!
For he is the one who gives me hope.
He a-lone is my pro-tec-tor and de-liv-er-er.

He is my ref-uge;
I will not be shak-en.
God de-liv-ers me and ex-alts me;
God is my strong pro-tec-tor and my shel-ter.

Trust in him at all times, you peo-ple!
Pour out your hearts be-fore him!
God is our shel-ter!
Men are noth-ing but a mere breath;

Hu-man be-ings are un-re-li-a-ble.
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them to-geth-er are light-er than air.
Do not trust in what you can gain by op-pres-sion!

Do not put false con-fi-dence
in what you can gain by rob-ber-y!
If wealth in-creas-es,
do not be-come at-tached to it!

God has de-clared one prin-ci-ple;
two prin-ci-ples I have heard:
Our God is strong,
and you, O Lord, dem-on-strate loy-al love.

For you re-pay men for what they do.
Trust in God at all times, you peo-ple!

For our God is our shel-ter!

A reading from Job 41:1-11



(40:25) “Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook,
and tie down its tongue with a rope?

Can you put a cord through its nose,
or pierce its jaw with a hook?

Will it make numerous supplications to you,
will it speak to you with tender words?

Will it make a pact with you,
so you could take it as your slave for life?

Can you play with it, like a bird,
or tie it on a leash for your girls?

Will partners bargain for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?

Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?

If you lay your hand on it,
you will remember the fight.
Do not do it again!

(41:1) See, his expectation is wrong,
he is laid low even at the sight of it.

Is it not fierce when it is awakened?
Who is he, then, who can stand before it?

(Who has confronted me that I should repay?
Everything under heaven belongs to me!)

A reading from Acts 16:6-15

They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in the province of Asia. When they came to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to do this, so they passed through Mysia and went down to Troas. A vision appeared to Paul during the night: A Macedonian man was standing there urging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” After Paul saw the vision, we attempted immediately to go over to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

We put out to sea from Troas and sailed a straight course to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of that district of Macedonia, a Roman colony. We stayed in this city for some days. On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate to the side of the river, where we thought there would be a place of prayer, and we sat down and began to speak to the women who had assembled there. A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, a God-fearing woman, listened to us. The Lord opened her heart to respond to what Paul was saying. After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me to be a believer in the Lord, come and stay in my house.” And she persuaded us.

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.

born of the house of his serv-ant Da-vid.

Through his ho-ly proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our en-e-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-mem-ber his ho-ly cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

A Collect for Peace

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.
