A reading from Job 29:1-20

Then Job continued his speech:

“O that I could be as I was
in the months now gone,
in the days when God watched over me,

when he caused his lamp
to shine upon my head,
and by his light
I walked through darkness;

just as I was in my most productive time,
when God’s intimate friendship was experienced in my tent,

when the Almighty was still with me
and my children were around me;

when my steps were bathed with butter
and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil!

When I went out to the city gate
and secured my seat in the public square,

the young men would see me and step aside,
and the old men would get up and remain standing;

the chief men refrained from talking
and covered their mouths with their hands;

the voices of the nobles fell silent,
and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.

“As soon as the ear heard these things, it blessed me,
and when the eye saw them, it bore witness to me,

for I rescued the poor who cried out for help,
and the orphan who had no one to assist him;

the blessing of the dying man descended on me,
and I made the widow’s heart rejoice;

I put on righteousness and it clothed me,
my just dealing was like a robe and a turban;

I was eyes for the blind
and feet for the lame;

I was a father to the needy,
and I investigated the case of the person I did not know;

I broke the fangs of the wicked,
and made him drop his prey from his teeth.

“Then I thought, ‘I will die in my own home,
my days as numerous as the grains of sand.

My roots reach the water,
and the dew lies on my branches all night long.

My glory will always be fresh in me,
and my bow ever new in my hand.’

great deeds are they that you have done,

Your ways are ways of right-eous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ages.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the prais-es of your Name?
for you on-ly are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and ho-ly works
have been re-vealed. Al-le-lu-ia, a-men!

A reading from Acts 14:1-18

The same thing happened in Iconium when Paul and Barnabas went into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a large group of both Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So they stayed there for a considerable time, speaking out courageously for the Lord, who testified to the message of his grace, granting miraculous signs and wonders to be performed through their hands. But the population of the city was divided; some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles. When both the Gentiles and the Jews (together with their rulers) made an attempt to mistreat them and stone them, Paul and Barnabas learned about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and the surrounding region. There they continued to proclaim the good news.

In Lystra sat a man who could not use his feet, lame from birth, who had never walked. This man was listening to Paul as he was speaking. When Paul stared intently at him and saw he had faith to be healed, he said with a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And the man leaped up and began walking. So when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” They began to call Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. The priest of the temple of Zeus, located just outside the city, brought bulls and garlands to the city gates; he and the crowds wanted to offer sacrifices to them. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard about it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, “Men, why are you doing these things? We too are men, with human natures just like you! We are proclaiming the good news to you, so that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to go their own ways, yet he did not leave himself without a witness by doing good, by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you with food and your hearts with joy.” Even by saying these things, they scarcely persuaded the crowds not to offer sacrifice to them.

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.

from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
