When trou-ble comes, may the Lord de-liv-er him.

you have healed him from his ill-ness.
As for me, I said: O Lord, have mer-cy on me!

Heal me, for I have sinned a-gainst you!

When some-one comes to vis-it, he pre-tends to be friend-ly;

He thinks of ways to de-fame me,

and raise me up, so I can pay them back!

Why do you boast a-bout your e-vil plan, O pow-er-ful man?
God's loy-al love pro-tects me all day long!
Your tongue car-ries out your de-struc-tive plan;
it is as ef-fec-tive as a sharp ra-zor, O de-ceiv-er.

You love e-vil more than good,
lies more than speak-ing the truth.
You love to use all the words that de-stroy,
and the tongue that de-ceives.

Yet God will make you a per-ma-nent heap of ruins.
He will scoop you up and re-move you from your home;
he will up-root you from the land of the liv-ing.
When the god-ly see this, they will be filled with awe,

And will mock the e-vil-do-er, say-ing:
Look, here is the man who would not make God his pro-tec-tor!
He trust-ed in his great wealth
and was con-fi-dent a-bout his plans to de-stroy oth-ers.

But I am like a flour-ish-ing ol-ive tree in the house of God;
I con-tin-ual-ly trust in God's loy-al love.
I will con-tin-ual-ly thank you when you ex-e-cute judg-ment;
I will re-ly on you, for your loy-al fol-low-ers know you are good.

Readings

A reading from Job 33:1, 19-28



“But now, O Job, listen to my words,
and hear everything I have to say!

Or a person is chastened by pain on his bed,
and with the continual strife of his bones,

so that his life loathes food,
and his soul rejects appetizing fare.

His flesh wastes away from sight,
and his bones, which were not seen,
are easily visible.

He draws near to the place of corruption,
and his life to the messengers of death.

If there is an angel beside him,
one mediator out of a thousand,
to tell a person what constitutes his uprightness;

and if God is gracious to him and says,
‘Spare him from going down
to the place of corruption,
I have found a ransom for him,’

then his flesh is restored like a youth’s;
he returns to the days of his youthful vigor.

He entreats God, and God delights in him,
he sees God’s face with rejoicing,
and God restores to him his righteousness.

That person sings to others, saying:
‘I have sinned and falsified what is right,
but I was not punished according to what I deserved.

He redeemed my life
from going down to the place of corruption,
and my life sees the light!’

My soul pro-claims the great-ness of the Lord,

He has mer-cy on those who fear him

A reading from Acts 13:44-52

On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they began to contradict what Paul was saying by reviling him. Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have appointed you to be a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoice and praise the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal life believed. So the word of the Lord was spreading through the entire region. But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their region. So after they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them, they went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,

A Collect for the Renewal of Life

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
