1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!

2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!

3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!

4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.

How of-ten they re-belled a-gainst him in the wil-der-ness,
and in-sult-ed him in the waste-land!
They a-gain chal-lenged God,
and of-fend-ed the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.

They did not re-mem-ber what he had done,
how he de-liv-ered them from the en-e-my,
when he per-formed his awe-some deeds in E-gypt,
and his acts of judg-ment in the re-gion of Zoan.

He turned their riv-ers into blood,
and they could not drink from their streams.
He sent swarms of bit-ing in-sects a-gainst them,
as well as frogs that o-ver-ran their land.

He gave their crops to the grass-hop-pers,
the fruit of their la-bor to the lo-custs.
He de-stroyed their vines with hail,
and their syc-a-more fig trees with driv-ing rain.

He rained hail down on their cat-tle,
and hurled light-ning bolts down on their live-stock.
His rag-ing an-ger lashed out a-gainst them,
He sent fu-ry, rage, and trou-ble

as mes-sen-gers who bring dis-as-ter.
He sent his an-ger in full force;
he did not spare them from death;
he hand-ed their lives o-ver to de-struc-tion.

He struck down all the first-born in E-gypt,
the first fruits of their re-pro-duc-tive pow-er in the tents of Ham.
Yet he brought out his peo-ple like sheep;
he led them through the wil-der-ness like a flock.

He guid-ed them safe-ly a-long,
and they were not a-fraid;
but the sea cov-ered their en-e-mies.
He brought them to the bor-der of his ho-ly land,

to this moun-tain-ous land
which his right hand ac-quired.
He drove the na-tions out from be-fore them;
he as-signed them their trib-al al-lot-ments

and al-lowed the tribes of Is-ra-el to set-tle down.
Yet they chal-lenged and de-fied God Most High,
and did not o-bey his com-mand.
They were un-faith-ful to God

and act-ed as treach-er-ous-ly as their an-ces-tors;
they were as un-re-li-a-ble as a bro-ken bow.
They made him an-gry with their pa-gan shrines,
and made him jeal-ous with their i-dols.

God heard and was an-gry;
he com-plete-ly re-ject-ed Is-ra-el.
He a-ban-doned the sanc-tu-ar-y at Shi-loh,
the tent where he lived a-mong men.

He al-lowed the sym-bol of his pres-ence to be cap-tured;
he gave the sym-bol of his splen-dor to the en-e-my.
He de-liv-ered his peo-ple o-ver to the sword,
and was an-gry with his cho-sen na-tion.

Fire con-sumed their young men,
and their vir-gins re-mained un-mar-ried.
Their priests fell by the sword,
but their wid-ows did not weep.

But then the Lord a-woke from his sleep;
he was like a war-ri-or in a drunk-en rage.
He drove his en-e-mies back;
he made them a per-ma-nent tar-get for in-sults.

He re-ject-ed the tent of Jo-seph;
he did not choose the tribe of Eph-ra-im.
He chose the tribe of Ju-dah,
and Mount Zi-on, which he loves.

He made his sanc-tu-ar-y
as en-dur-ing as the heav-ens a-bove;
as se-cure as the earth,
which he es-tab-lished per-ma-nent-ly.

He chose Da-vid, his serv-ant,
and took him from the sheep fold.
He took him a-way from fol-low-ing the sheep,
and made him the shep-herd

of Ja-cob, his peo-ple,
and of Is-ra-el, his cho-sen na-tion.
Da-vid cared for them
with pure mo-tives; he led them with skill.

Readings

A reading from Acts 18:12-28

Now while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews attacked Paul together and brought him before the judgment seat, saying, “This man is persuading people to worship God in a way contrary to the law!” But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, I would have been justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews, but since it concerns points of disagreement about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I will not be a judge of these things!” Then he had them forced away from the judgment seat. So they all seized Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue, and began to beat him in front of the judgment seat. Yet none of these things were of any concern to Gallio.

Paul, after staying many more days in Corinth, said farewell to the brothers and sailed away to Syria accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because he had made a vow. When they reached Ephesus, Paul left Priscilla and Aquila behind there, but he himself went into the synagogue and addressed the Jews. When they asked him to stay longer, he would not consent, but said farewell to them and added, “I will come back to you again if God wills.” Then he set sail from Ephesus, and when he arrived at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem and then went down to Antioch. After he spent some time there, Paul left and went through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent speaker, well-versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak out fearlessly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately. When Apollos wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he assisted greatly those who had believed by grace, for he refuted the Jews vigorously in public debate, demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.

A reading from Luke 3:15-22

While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ, John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming – I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”

And in this way, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed good news to the people. But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil deeds that he had done, Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.

Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. And while he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.”
