Evening Prayer - Monday September 7 2020

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed | to save | us.
R: O Lord, | make haste | to help | us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 44

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O God, we have clear-ly heard; our an-ces-tors have told us
what you did in their days, in an-cient times.
You, by your pow-er, de-feat-ed na-tions
and set-tled our fath-ers on their land;

You crushed the peo-ple liv-ing there
and en-ab-led our an-ces-tors to oc-cu-py it.
For they did not con-quer the land by their swords,
and they did not pre-vail by their strength,

But ra-ther by your pow-er, strength and good fa-vor,
for you were par-tial to them.
You are my king, God!
De-cree Ja-cob's de-liv-er-ance!

By your pow-er we will drive back our en-e-mies;
By your strength we will tram-ple down our foes!
For I do not trust in my bow, and I do not pre-vail by my sword.
For you de-liv-er us from our en-e-mies;

You hu-mil-i-ate those who hate us.
In God we boast all day long,
and we will con-tin-ual-ly give thanks to your name.
But you re-ject-ed and em-bar-rassed us!

You did not go into bat-tle with our ar-my.
You made us re-treat from the en-e-my.
Those who hate us take what-ev-er they want from us.
You hand-ed us o-ver like sheep to be eat-en;

You scat-tered us a-mong the na-tions.
You sold your peo-ple for pit-tance;
you did not ask a high price for them.
You made us an ob-ject of dis-dain to our neigh-bors;

Those who live on our bor-ders taunt and in-sult us.
You made us an ob-ject of rid-i-cule a-mong the na-tions;
for-eign-ers treat us with con-tempt.
All day long I feel hu-mil-i-at-ed

And am o-ver-whelmed with shame,
be-fore the vin-dic-tive en-e-my
who rid-i-cules and in-sults me.
All this has hap-pened to us,

E-ven though we have not re-ject-ed you
Nor vio-lat-ed your cov-e-nant with us.
We have not been un-faith-ful,
nor have we dis-o-beyed your com-mands.

Yet you have bat-tered us, leav-ing us a heap of ruins
We are o-ver-run by wild dogs;
you have cov-ered us with dark-ness.
If we had re-ject-ed our God,

And spread out our hands in prayer to an-oth-er god,
would not God dis-cov-er it,
for he knows one's thoughts?
Yet be-cause of you we are killed all day long;

We are treat-ed like sheep at the slaught-er-ing block.
Rouse your-self! Why do you sleep, Lord?
Wake up! Do not re-ject us for-ev-er!
Why do you look the oth-er way,

And ig-nore the way we are op-pressed and mis-treat-ed?
For we lie in the dirt,
with our bel-lies pressed to the ground.
Res-cue us be-cause of your loy-al love!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Acts 13:44-52

On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they began to contradict what Paul was saying by reviling him. Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have appointed you to be a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoice and praise the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal life believed. So the word of the Lord was spreading through the entire region. But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their region. So after they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them, they went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Thanks be to God!

Monday - Song of Praise

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glo-ry to you, Lord God of our fath-ers;
you are wor-thy of praise; glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you for the ra-di-ance of your ho-ly Name;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glo-ry to you in the splen-dor of your tem-ple;
on the throne of your maj-es-ty, glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you, seat-ed be-tween the Cher-u-bim;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glo-ry to you, be-hold-ing the depths;
in the high vault of heav-en, glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you, Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

A reading from John 10:19-30

Another sharp division took place among the Jewish people because of these words. Many of them were saying, “He is possessed by a demon and has lost his mind! Why do you listen to him?” Others said, “These are not the words of someone possessed by a demon. A demon cannot cause the blind to see, can it?”

Then came the feast of the Dedication in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area in Solomon’s Portico. The Jewish leaders surrounded him and asked, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus replied, “I told you and you do not believe. The deeds I do in my Father’s name testify about me. But you refuse to believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them from my Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Monday - Song of Simeon

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lord, you now have set your serv-ant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Sav-ior,
whom you have pre-pared for all the world to see:

A Light to en-light-en the na-tions,
and the glo-ry of your peo-ple Is-ra-el.
Lord, you now have set your serv-ant free
to go in peace as you have prom-ised;

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Prayers

Monday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Monday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

We en-treat you, Lord.

and be freed from con-dem-na-tion
be-fore the great judg-ment seat of Christ,
We en-treat you, Lord.

That we may be bound to-geth-er by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Bar-na-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-oth-er and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, Lord.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper all who labor to gather them, that we, who are constantly receiving good things from your hand, may always give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Peace

Most holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgements, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

and the fel-low-ship of the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
be with us all ev-er-more. A-men.

LEVAS II - Hymn 120 There's a Sweet, Sweet Spirit

Piano    Parts    Soprano    Alto    Tenor    Bass

1. There's a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,
And I know that it's the Spirit of the LORD
There are sweet expressions on each face
And I know they feel the presence of the LORD

[Refrain] Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet Heavenly Dove,
Stay Right here with us, filling us with Your love.
And for these blessings, we lift our hearts in praise;
Without a doubt, we'll know,
That we have been revived
When we shall leave this place.

2. There are blessings you cannot receive
Till you know Him in His fullness and believe
You're the one to profit when you say
"I am going to walk with Jesus all the way" [Refrain]

3. If you say He saved you from your sin
Now you're weak, you're bound, and cannot enter in
You can make it right if you yield
You'll enjoy the Holy Spirit that we feel [Refrain]
