Wednesday - Evensong Invitation

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in the beau-ty of his ho-li-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lift-ing up of my hands as the eve-ning sac-ri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teach-es me, night af-ter night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Wednesday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ev-er-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, ho-ly and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to the set-ting of the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are wor-thy at all times
to be praised by hap-py voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giv-er of life,
and to be glo-ri-fied through all the world.

Psalms

Psalm 81

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Shout for joy to God, our source of strength!
Shout out to the God of Ja-cob!
Sing a song and play the tam-bou-rine,
the pleas-ant sound-ing harp,

and the ten-stringed in-stru-ment!
Sound the ram's horn on the day of the new moon,
and on the day of the full moon
when our fes-ti-val be-gins.

For ob-serv-ing the fes-ti-val
is a re-quire-ment for Is-ra-el;
it is an or-di-nance giv-en by the God of Ja-cob.
He de-creed it as a reg-u-la-tion in Jo-seph,

when he at-tacked the land of E-gypt.
I heard a voice I did not rec-og-nize.
It said: I re-moved the bur-den from his shoul-ders;
his hands were re-leased from hold-ing the bas-kets.

In your dis-tress
you called out and I res-cued you.
I an-swered you from a dark thun-der-cloud.
I test-ed you at the wat-ers of Mer-i-bah.

I said, Lis-ten, my peo-ple!
I will warn you! O Is-ra-el,
if on-ly you would o-bey me!
There must be no oth-er god a-mong you.

You must not wor-ship a for-eign god.
I am the Lord, your God,
I am the one who brought you
out of the land of E-gypt.

O-pen your mouth wide and I will fill it!
But my peo-ple did not o-bey me;
Is-ra-el did not sub-mit to me.
I gave them o-ver to their stub-born de-sire;

they did what seemed right to them.
If on-ly my peo-ple would o-bey me!
If on-ly Is-ra-el would keep my com-mands!
Then I would quick-ly sub-due their en-e-mies,

I would at-tack their ad-ver-sar-ies.
May those who hate the Lord
cow-er in fear be-fore him!
May they be per-ma-nent-ly hu-mil-i-at-ed!

I would feed Is-ra-el the best wheat,
and would sat-is-fy your ap-pe-tite
with hon-ey from the rock-y cliff.
Shout for joy to God, our source of strength!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Psalm 82

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

God stands in the as-sem-bly of El;
in the midst of the gods he ren-ders judg-ment.
He says, How long
will you make un-just le-gal de-ci-sions

and show fa-vorit-ism to the wick-ed?
De-fend the cause of the poor
and of the fath-er-less!
Vin-di-cate the op-pressed and suf-fer-ing!

Res-cue the poor and need-y!
De-liv-er them from the pow-er of the wick-ed!
They nei-ther know nor un-der-stand.
They stum-ble a-round in the dark,

While all the foun-da-tions of the earth crum-ble.
I thought, You are all gods;
all of you are sons of the Most High.
Yet you will die like mor-tals;

You will fall like all the oth-er rul-ers.
Rise up, O God, and ex-e-cute judg-ment
Pass judg-ment on all the earth!
For you own all the na-tions.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Acts 19:1-10

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went through the inland regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples there and said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul said, “Into what then were you baptized?” “Into John’s baptism,” they replied. Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and when Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy. (Now there were about twelve men in all.)

So Paul entered the synagogue and spoke out fearlessly for three months, addressing and convincing them about the kingdom of God. But when some were stubborn and refused to believe, reviling the Way before the congregation, he left them and took the disciples with him, addressing them every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all who lived in the province of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Wednesday - Glory to God

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Glo-ry to God in the high-est,
and peace to his peo-ple on earth.
Lord God, heav-en-ly King,
al-might-y God and Fath-er,

We wor-ship you, we give you thanks,
We praise you for your glo-ry.
Lord Je-sus Christ, on-ly Son of the Fath-er,
Lord God, O Lamb of God,

You take a-way the sin of the world:
now have mer-cy on us;
you are seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er:
now re-ceive our pray-er.

For you a-lone are the Ho-ly One,
You a-lone are the Lord,
You a-lone are the Most High, Je-sus Christ,
with the Ho-ly Spi-rit, in the glo-ry of God the Fath-er.

A reading from Luke 4:1-13

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he endured temptations from the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, he was famished. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man does not live by bread alone.’”

Then the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “To you I will grant this whole realm – and the glory that goes along with it, for it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. So then, if you will worship me, all this will be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Wednesday - Second Song of Isaiah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found;
call up-on him when he draws near.
Let the wick-ed for-sake their ways
and the e-vil ones their thoughts;

And let them turn to the Lord,
and he will have com-pas-sion,
Let then re-turn to our God,
for he will rich-ly par-don.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heav-ens are high-er than the earth,
so are my ways high-er than your ways,

and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from the heav-ens
and re-turns not a-gain,
but wat-ers the whole earth,

Bring-ing forth life
and giv-ing a-bun-dant growth
And seed for re-plan-ting
and bread and fruit for eat-ing,

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it will not re-turn to me emp-ty;
But it will ac-com-plish that which I have pur-posed,
and pros-per in that for which I sent it.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Prayers

Wednesday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Wednesday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Wednesday - Evening Suffrages B

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

That this eve-ning may be ho-ly, good, and peace-ful,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That your ho-ly an-gels may lead us in paths of peace and good-will,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be par-doned and for-giv-en for our sins and of-fenses,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That there may be peace to your Church and to the whole world,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may de-part this life in your faith and fear,
and be freed from con-dem-na-tion
be-fore the great judg-ment seat of Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be bound to-geth-er by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Bar-na-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-oth-er and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Protection

O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Wednesday - Closing Blessings

May the God of hope fill us
with all joy and peace in be-liev-ing
through the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit. A-men.
