O Lord, the God who a-veng-es!
O God who a-veng-es, re-veal your splen-dor!
Rise up, O judge of the earth! Pay back the proud!
O Lord, how long will the wick-ed cel-e-brate?

They spew out threats and speak de-fi-ant-ly;
all the e-vil-do-ers boast.
O Lord, they crush your peo-ple;
they op-press the na-tion that be-longs to you.

They kill the wid-ow and the res-i-dent for-eign-er,
and they mur-der the fa-ther-less.
Then they say, The Lord does not see this;
the God of Ja-cob does not take no-tice of it.

Take no-tice of this, you ig-no-rant peo-ple!
You fools, when will you ev-er un-der-stand?
Does the one who makes the hu-man ear not hear?

The Lord knows that peo-ple's thoughts are mor-al-ly bank-rupt.
How bless-ed is the one whom you in-struct, O Lord,

the one whom you teach from your law,

un-til the wick-ed are de-stroyed.
Cer-tain-ly the Lord does not for-sake his peo-ple;

He does not a-ban-don the na-tion that be-longs to him.
For jus-tice will pre-vail,

Who will rise up to de-fend me a-gainst the wick-ed?

Who will stand up for me

If I say, My foot is slip-ping,

Cruel rul-ers are not your al-lies,
those who make op-pres-sive laws.
They con-spire a-gainst the blame-less,
and con-demn to death the in-no-cent.

But the Lord will pro-tect me, and my God will shel-ter me.
He will pay them back for their sin.
He will de-stroy them be-cause of their e-vil.
the Lord our God will de-stroy them.

Readings

A reading from Acts 21:1-14

After we tore ourselves away from them, we put out to sea, and sailing a straight course, we came to Cos, on the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went aboard, and put out to sea. After we sighted Cyprus and left it behind on our port side, we sailed on to Syria and put in at Tyre, because the ship was to unload its cargo there. After we located the disciples, we stayed there seven days. They repeatedly told Paul through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem. When our time was over, we left and went on our way. All of them, with their wives and children, accompanied us outside of the city. After kneeling down on the beach and praying, we said farewell to one another. Then we went aboard the ship, and they returned to their own homes. We continued the voyage from Tyre and arrived at Ptolemais, and when we had greeted the brothers, we stayed with them for one day. On the next day we left and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. (He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.)

While we remained there for a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it, and said, “The Holy Spirit says this: ‘This is the way the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man whose belt this is, and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’” When we heard this, both we and the local people begged him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” Because he could not be persuaded, we said no more except, “The Lord’s will be done.”

Splen-dor and ho-nor and king-ly pow-er
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-at-ed eve-ry-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-at-ed and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fam-i-ly, lan-guage, peo-ple, and na-tion,
a king-dom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,

A reading from Luke 5:12-26

While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came to him who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed down with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” So he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing. Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him. Then he ordered the man to tell no one, but commanded him, “Go and show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” But the news about him spread even more, and large crowds were gathering together to hear him and to be healed of their illnesses. Yet Jesus himself frequently withdrew to the wilderness and prayed.

Now on one of those days, while he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting nearby (who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem), and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. Just then some men showed up, carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher. They were trying to bring him in and place him before Jesus. But since they found no way to carry him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down on the stretcher through the roof tiles right in front of Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” Then the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to think to themselves, “Who is this man who is uttering blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” When Jesus perceived their hostile thoughts, he said to them, “Why are you raising objections within yourselves? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – he said to the paralyzed man – “I tell you, stand up, take your stretcher and go home.” Immediately he stood up before them, picked up the stretcher he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God. Then astonishment seized them all, and they glorified God. They were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen incredible things today.”

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

Collect of the Day
