E-ven young li-ons some-times lack food and are hun-gry.

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Come chil-dren! Lis-ten to me!
I will teach you what it means to fear the Lord.
Do you want to real-ly live?

Would you love to live a long, hap-py life?
Then make sure you don’t speak e-vil words or use de-cep-tive speech!
Turn a-way from e-vil and do what is right!
Strive for peace and pro-mote it!

The Lord pays at-ten-tion to the god-ly
and hears their cry for help.
But the Lord op-pos-es e-vil-do-ers
and wipes out all mem-o-ry of them from the earth.

The god-ly cry out and the Lord hears;
he saves them from all their trou-ble.
The Lord is near the bro-ken heart-ed;
he de-liv-ers those who are dis-cour-aged.

The god-ly face man-y dan-gers,
but the Lord saves them from each one of them.
He pro-tects all his bones;
not one of them is bro-ken.

E-vil peo-ple self-de-struct;
those who hate the god-ly are pun-ished.
The Lord res-cues his serv-ant;
all who take shel-ter in him es-cape pun-ish-ment.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from James 1:19-27

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. For human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls. But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves. For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was. But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out – he will be blessed in what he does. If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile. Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their adversity and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

A reading from Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

“Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward! But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your gift may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

“Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward! But whenever you pray, go into your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

“When you fast, do not look sullen like the hypocrites, for they make their faces unattractive so that people will see them fasting. I tell you the truth, they have their reward! When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others when you are fasting, but only to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
