Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,

in a waste-land; they found no road to a cit-y in which to live.

They were hun-gry and thirst-y;

that they might find a cit-y in which to live.

For he shat-tered the bronze gates,

They lost their ap-pe-tite for all food,
and they drew near the gates of death.
They cried out to the Lord in their dis-tress;

He de-liv-ered them from their trou-ble.
He sent them an as-sur-ing word and healed them;
he res-cued them from the pits where they were trapped.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his loy-al love,

Give thanks for the a-maz-ing things
God has done for his peo-ple!
Let them pre-sent thank of-fer-ings,
and loud-ly pro-claim what he has done!

Some trav-eled on the sea in ships,
and car-ried car-go o-ver the vast wat-ers.
They wit-nessed the acts of the Lord,
his a-maz-ing feats on the deep wat-er.

He gave the or-der for a wind-storm,
and it stirred up the waves of the sea.
They reached up to the sky,
then dropped into the depths of the sea.

The sail-ors' strength left them be-cause the dan-ger was so great.
They swayed and stag-gered like a drunk,
and all their skill proved in-ef-fec-tive.
They cried out to the Lord in their dis-tress;

He de-liv-ered them from their trou-ble.
He calmed the storm, and the waves grew si-lent.
The sail-ors re-joiced be-cause the waves grew qui-et,
And he led them to the har-bor they de-sired.

Let them give thanks to the Lord for his loy-al love,
and for the a-maz-ing things he has done for peo-ple!
Let them ex-alt him in the as-sem-bly of the peo-ple!
Let them praise him in the place where the lead-ers pre-side!

A reading from Acts 21:37-22:16


As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the commanding officer, “May I say something to you?” The officer replied, “Do you know Greek? Then you’re not that Egyptian who started a rebellion and led the four thousand men of the ‘Assassins’ into the wilderness some time ago?” Paul answered, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of an important city. Please allow me to speak to the people.” When the commanding officer had given him permission, Paul stood on the steps and gestured to the people with his hand. When they had become silent, he addressed them in Aramaic,

“Brothers and fathers, listen to my defense that I now make to you.” (When they heard that he was addressing them in Aramaic, they became even quieter.) Then Paul said, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated with strictness under Gamaliel according to the law of our ancestors, and was zealous for God just as all of you are today. I persecuted this Way even to the point of death, tying up both men and women and putting them in prison, as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. From them I also received letters to the brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to make arrests there and bring the prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. As I was en route and near Damascus, about noon a very bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around me. Then I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’ Those who were with me saw the light, but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. So I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Get up and go to Damascus; there you will be told about everything that you have been designated to do.’ Since I could not see because of the brilliance of that light, I came to Damascus led by the hand of those who were with me. A man named Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who live there, came to me and stood beside me and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, regain your sight!’ And at that very moment I looked up and saw him. Then he said, ‘The God of our ancestors has already chosen you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear a command from his mouth, because you will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and have your sins washed away, calling on his name.’

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.
He has raised up for us a might-y sav-ior,
born of the house of his serv-ant Da-vid.

Through his ho-ly proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our en-e-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-mem-ber his ho-ly cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from the hands of our en-e-mies,

A reading from Luke 6:12-26

Now it was during this time that Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent all night in prayer to God. When morning came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Then he came down with them and stood on a level place. And a large number of his disciples had gathered along with a vast multitude from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. They came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases, and those who suffered from unclean spirits were cured. The whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.

Then he looked up at his disciples and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God belongs to you.

“Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors did the same things to the prophets.

“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already.

“Woe to you who are well satisfied with food now, for you will be hungry.
“Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

“Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for their ancestors did the same things to the false prophets.
