Cer-tain-ly God is good to Is-ra-el,
and to those whose mo-tives are pure!
But as for me, my feet al-most slipped;
my feet al-most slid out from un-der me.

For I en-vied those who are proud,
as I ob-served the pros-per-i-ty of the wick-ed.
For they suf-fer no pain;
their bod-ies are strong and well-fed.

They are im-mune to the trou-ble com-mon to men;
they do not suf-fer as oth-er men do.
Ar-ro-gance is their neck-lace,
and vio-lence cov-ers them like cloth-ing.

Their pros-per-i-ty caus-es them to do wrong;
All their thoughts are sin-ful.
They mock and say e-vil things;
they proud-ly threat-en vio-lence.

They speak as if they rule in heav-en,
and lay claim to the earth.
There-fore they have more than e-nough food to eat,
and e-ven suck up the wat-er of the sea.

They say, How does God know what we do?
Is the Most High a-ware of what goes on?
Take a good look! This is what the wick-ed are like,
Those who al-ways have it so eas-y

They get rich-er and rich-er.
Sure-ly in vain I have kept my mo-tives pure
and main-tained a pure life-style.
I suf-fer all day long,

I am pun-ished eve-ry morn-ing.
If I had pub-li-cized these thoughts,
I would have be-trayed your peo-ple.
When I tried to make sense of this,

it was trou-bling to me.
Then I en-tered the pre-cincts of God's tem-ple,
and un-der-stood the desti-ny of the wick-ed.
Sure-ly you put them in slip-per-y plac-es;

You bring them down to ruin.
How des-o-late they be-come in a mere mo-ment!
Ter-ri-fy-ing judg-ments make their de-mise com-plete!
They are like a dream af-ter one wakes up.

O Lord, when you a-wake you will de-spise them.
Yes, my spi-rit was bit-ter,
and my in-sides felt sharp pain.
I was ig-no-rant and lacked in-sight;

I was as sense-less as an an-i-mal be-fore you.
But I am con-tin-ual-ly with you;
And you hold my right hand.
You guide me by your wise ad-vice,

and then you will lead me
to a po-si-tion of hon-or.
Whom do I have in heav-en but you?
I de-sire no one but you on earth.

My flesh and my heart may grow weak,
but God al-ways pro-tects my heart
and gives me sta-bil-i-ty.
Yes, look! Those far from you die;

You de-stroy eve-ry-one who is un-faith-ful to you.
But as for me, Gods pres-ence is all I need.

Readings

A reading from Acts 19:11-20

God was performing extraordinary miracles by Paul’s hands, so that when even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his body were brought to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. But some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were possessed by evil spirits, saying, “I sternly warn you by Jesus whom Paul preaches. ” (Now seven sons of a man named Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this. ) But the evil spirit replied to them, “I know about Jesus and I am acquainted with Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who was possessed by the evil spirit jumped on them and beat them all into submission. He prevailed against them so that they fled from that house naked and wounded. This became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; fear came over them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was praised. Many of those who had believed came forward, confessing and making their deeds known. Large numbers of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them up in the presence of everyone. When the value of the books was added up, it was found to total fifty thousand silver coins. In this way the word of the Lord continued to grow in power and to prevail.

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.
He has raised up for us a might-y sav-ior,
born of the house of his serv-ant Da-vid.

Through his ho-ly proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our en-e-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-mem-ber his ho-ly cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from the hands of our en-e-mies,
Free to wor-ship him with-out fear,

ho-ly and right-eous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of the Most High,

for you will go be-fore the Lord to pre-pare his way,
To give his peo-ple knowl-edge of sal-va-tion
by the for-give-ness of their sins.
In the ten-der com-pas-sion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those who dwell in dark-ness
and the shad-ow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

A reading from Luke 4:14-30

Then Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the surrounding countryside. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by all.

Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives

and the regaining of sight to the blind,

to set free those who are oppressed,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to tell them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.” All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” Jesus said to them, “No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ and say, ‘What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.’” And he added, “I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land. Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. But he passed through the crowd and went on his way.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.
